Pretty rough for That's My Boy. It was caught in that weird dilemma that often plagues movies like this where it looks too juvenile for the above-17 set but teenage boys under 17 can't see it. People blaming Adam Sandler and instantly declaring his career over are silly, though. Remember how well Grown Ups did after Funny People tanked? Yeah, that's what I thought.

OK for Rock of Ages if it can still pull out $20M, although less than expected.

Of course his career isn't over, but he should pause and consider his choices with greater care.

Grown Ups as I said before has many other stars to draw people in especially Kevin James and is a film a whole family can watch.

I waited to post to see if today’s openers would strengthen over the course of the day. Because based on today’s early numbers, the Summer 2012 box office is suffering a serious case of seasickness due to the constant up and down, up and down, motion of the North American box office. After the tsunami that was Marvel’s The Avengers, five major studio movies disappointed. Then DreamWorks Animation’s Madagascar 3 and Fox’s Prometheus performed better than expected and are still easily holding #1 and #2 their second weekends with $35M and $23M respectively. Contrast that with today’s newcomers: New Line/Warner Bros’ Rock Of Ages (3,470 theaters) starring Tom Cruise is falling to earth with a thud. I suspect the problem is in the casting; Russell Brand has been repellant to moviegoers, while Cruise as iconic rocker proved incredulous for audiences. Right now the PG-13 musical is looking to open to only $18M to $21M after taking in just $7M today. The studio is still holding out hope, though: “A good CinemaScore tonight will result in great legs for the film. Landmark Theatre on Pico just added a 2nd screen due to advance sales and a great LA Times review,” a WB exec emails me. Yes, but the pic is set on Sunset Boulevard after all. Columbia/Sony’s That’s My Boy (3,030 theaters) starring Adam Sandler also is bottoming. Hollywood didn’t expect him to attract his usual family friendly audience with an ‘R’ rating. But an actor who reliably takes in $30M to $40M every opening weekend dropping to $12M to $15M after grossing only $4M today can’t go unchastized. Especially if he hurt his brand with his most recent pic, that execrable flop Jack & Jill. Rounding out the Top Five, Universal’s Snow White And The Huntsman moving into its 3rd weekend is looking like $13M.
Prometheus lives!

That would be a shocking weekend total for Prometheus after a 3.3 million Thursday

Prometheus holding onto the #2 spot would be kinda nuts.

Pathetic for That's My Boy. Maybe there's a little hope for moviegoers after all...

Wait so That's My Boy could premiere at just #5 for the weekend with a $4M OD. Hahahahaha

Holy cow that is awful if it holds up to be true for That's My Boy.

Didn't even think that was in the realm of possibilities for it.

I don't get this. Samberg is barely a (movie) actor so it's all Sandler and he's never been an R draw. It looked awful has terrible buzz and was an odd, brutal, abrasive concept. I never saw big success here. Although opening 10m under J&J is pretty bad.

Exactly. If they don't know how to behave, and feel OK offending others, they get their ass kicked, so they'll think next time before opening their rotten mouths.

Incredible that it didn't even come close to Jack & Jill's opening. What went right with that movie?

Projecting $15m from a $4m Friday for a R-rated comedy in June is nuts. I don't even see $12m if that $4m number turns out to be true.

I thought the same re: Jack n Jill but that was PG13 wasnt it?

This is easily Sandler's biggest flop.

The thing with Thats My Boy aka I Hate you Dad - is that Sandler looks more irritating and repulsive than ever.

J&J was rated an even more lenient PG actually.

Looks like the top 12 may not hit $130m combined. That would be the worst Father's Day weekend since 2005, and admission-wise, could be the worst since the same weekend from 1997.

If TMB really did make 4m today I don't see how it nears 15m for the Weekend. The weekend frame looks more like 10-12m off a 4m OD.

That's My Boy is poised to rank last among comedies targeting male audiences in box office gross this year:

21 Jump Street Sony $137,634,849
American Reunion Uni. $56,758,835
The Dictator Par. $56,568,263
Project X WB $54,731,865
The Three Stooges Fox $43,238,374
That's My Boy Sony $36,000,000 (?)

That was inconceivable before its release.

Yikes,

If the 4 million OD stands up there is no way this makes 12 million over the weekend let alone 15. You Don't Mess With the Zohan had a 2.85 internal multiplier while Grown Ups had a 2.81 internal multiplier.

Best case scenerio would be a 2.8 internal multiplier meaning 11.2 million.

I think Little Nicky still holds that title - - but remember, BO performance doesn't equate to quality - - Little Nicky is hilarious, and I have high hopes for That's My Boy as well.

Little Nicky is def. still his biggest flop.
It came out when he was on fire after both The Waterboy and Big Daddy were 160 million grossers, and then that one opened to 16 million.

It's true though, it makes you think what went right with Jack and Jill?

It's not as if Jack and Jill was a monster hit. A star-driven, family-friendly comedy released in 3,000+ theatres in November grossing 74 million is not earth-shattering. It didn't come close to Bedtime Stories' total.

It's also on the extreme low end of similar comedies. Nowhere near Big Momma's House, Mrs. Doubtfire, Norbit, or The Nutty Professor.

So there were definitely signs of trouble with Jack and Jill's financial performance, too. That's My Boy is just a more intense example because of the R rating and the incredibly nasty, foul-mouthed character Sandler seems to play. A character who, in the advertising at least, blasted past adorable curmudgeon and landed in the area of potential rapist-murderer.

It's good one of Sandler's next movies is the sports comedy with Will Ferrell. He could use an A-list co-star right now. Andy Samberg is a box-office nonentity.

Let the air in. Move away from the same Happy Madison roster of players. Send Nick Swardson home.

Between the Ferrell movie, Grown Ups 2, and the comedy with the two Kevins (Hart and James), he seems well positioned to recover from That's My Boy.
