Like I said before there are really no words to describe this. But, it is ALOT of fun being apart of HUGE events like this and to actually witness shit like this is just insane. I mean I still don't understand why this movie was so fucking big. IMO the trailers didn't look like anything special and they showed none of the action going down on screen. Just talking and melodrama. Also a movie based on such a grim premise doesn't really scream blockbuster. I guess blockbuster rules don't apply to THG because it pretty much broke every rule in the book. Should be fun seeing the legs here on out, but it looks like 2012 could be the first year were we have the most $300M+ films in one year.

It deserves the 100m mark and it looks it will get there. I thought that 60% Friday drop might translate through the whole weekend...oh wait, it dropped last Saturday. Forgot.

So, what's the smallest non-holiday Sunday drop outside of summer that people can think of? Because I need this to drop 17.6% on Sunday for $160m, assuming all else holds.

Haha yes you do. That would be amazing if you won that bet, but it's gonna be dang close. I've only found Fast Five's 27% drop and Passion of the Christ's 15% drop so far.

Passion of the Chirst at 15%
However that is not comparable.
I found it silly why the studio did not realize the film would hold amazingly well on The Lords day lol...

As mentioned, star-crossed lovers has always managed to win the hearts of audiences for HUNDREDS of years. B. The first Twilight opened to 70m. This is 155m. There's a significant difference. Don't kill me for saying this, but I think one of the reasons THG opened as big as it did is because Twilight films helped pave the way. Both films have attractive, young casts in a love triangle that appeal to tween girls. The comparisons to Twilight are probably one of the reasons some of them went out to see it, and its larger numbers are probably due to the fact that it also has gritty violence and a complex protagonist. If THG had come out first, it probably wouldn't have opened quite as wide; possibly somewhere along the lines of the first Potter film. Then, if the first Twilight film came out today, it likely would have opened somewhere along the numbers of New Moon

But Hunger Games? I'm just getting back into box office after like a year of not following it, so this movie almost completely blindsided me

Full estimates:http://boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/ ... =12&p=.htmThe Hunger Games fucked over everything. Not a single film in the Top 12 dropped less than 40%. BTW, Act of Valor's run is really impressive.

 Re: Weekend Estimates - Katni$$
Even with all THG craziness right now I'm really glad it didn't completely swallow 21 Jump Street. It had the best drop in the entire top 10, so I'm not going to complain. It's second weekend drop was even better than Superbad which is even more impressive considering that came out in late summer. It should still be on track for $120M+.

 Re: Weekend Estimates - Katni$$
This is gonna be a fun movie to track. I hope we'll all be surprised if this has a "small" drop for a big opener next weekend. And that's a very nice drop for 21 Jump Street. Probably wouldn't been in the 30's without THG.

with that much increase on Saturday (minus midnight), this movie should break $40 million on Sunday.

If HG holds well next week and Mirror Mirror/Wrath have solid openings, we're on set for a 900m+ March. 900m+ is already assured, which translates to a 32% increase from 2011. Complete dominance.

Not to mention, we'll be ahead of 2010 by the end of the week, and with the weakness of April and May that year, we may never look back. Edit: Well April was pretty strong in 2010, but I think we can at least match it.

Also, 21 Jump Street and The Lorax should be commended for their solid holds in the face of the Hunger Games monster.
