 Re: Hunger Games Sellout Watch
Here's Nikki's update from earlier Quote: ‘Hunger Games’ Pre-Sells Over 1M Tickets
By NIKKI FINKE | Monday March 19, 2012 @ 2:43pm PDT Tags: Hollywood box office, Lionsgate, The Hunger Games COMMENTS (11) EXCLUSIVE: Crazy speculation that Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games could gross $125 million its opening 3-day weekend beginning this Friday is more and more looking like reality. Even inside-the-studio estimates have cautiously been raised from $75M to $95+M. Already, the hotly anticipated film has pre-sold over a whopping 1 million tickets on big online sellers Fandango and Movietickets.com combined. Yesterday, the pic sold 83,000 tickets alone on Fandango. This movie based on the bestselling trilogy of novels by Suzanne Collins has turned Twilight-like huge for Lionsgate which was badly in need of a franchise. But unlike Twilight which attracted predominantly a female audience, The Hunger Games could attract younger males as well as younger and older females. Exactly how much the studio can gross for the first weekend depends on how many screenings each theater can pack into 72 hours by finding enough staff willing to work the extra hours and keep the pic running continuously. Tracking continues to amaze Hollywood which knows a blockbuster like this is great for the industry. http://www.deadline.com/2012/03/hunger-games-presale-tickets-1-million/

4:10 - 91 tickets sold 7:30 - 214 tickets sold 10:45 - 161 tickets sold
I can't remember the last time Friday showings for showtimes were sold out like this so far out, even on this same Imax screen. Since my last post this afternoon; Friday 4:10 - 99 tickets sold 7:30 - 256 tickets sold 10:45 - 166 tickets sold Picking up steam quickly, especially in the prime 7:30 hour. What's interesting is that Saturday has already started selling well too. Saturday 12:50 - 58 tickets sold 4:10 - 57 tickets sold 7:30 - 114 tickets sold 10:45 - 6 tickets sold I've never seen anything like this this far out in my town (Ottawa, Canada) Should be fun to watch all week!!

 Re: Hunger Games Sellout Watch
Most sellouts and ticket sales are for Friday evening rather then Midnight.
A few local theaters have 2 midnight showings that are still openings but have 1 or 2 showings sold out already on Friday.

 Re: Hunger Games Sellout Watch
I've noticed the same thing in Seattle and various other cities I checked earlier. Friday sellouts were on par with midnights or greater in some locations, and it's only Monday.

I'd shot myself in the head if I had to stay hours in a line to get the seats I want. It's great to come 5 minutes before the movie starts and sit in the exact seats you want to be in. You have to be careful. Remember the thread where I almost got crucified for this? Unassigned seating is still by far my greatest cultural shock from the US. If they had it in Russia, nobody would go to movies. Now with online booking/sales you pick your seats and then you just need to be there for the movie. P.S. 2nd biggest shock was/is paid incoming calls. Australia is more like Russia than the US in the two cases you mention above. Actually we used to only have non-allocated seating and I didnt like it when chains introduced allocated seating because it meant you had to get a ticket early or risk getting a crappy seat (pre-internet ticket days). Now I agree, that unless its an off peak time, allocated seating is the way to go.

 Re: Hunger Games Sellout Watch
Fourth Friday (non-midnight) sellout report for NoVA/DC Metro/MD area, as of 6:00PM EST 3 more sellouts added for 10 total sellouts now (ahead of BD1's pace). Here's the real kicker. In the past few hours, there have been 177 showtimes ADDED, for a total of 572 showtimes now. This is WELL above what BD1 even finished with, and we're approaching DH2 levels of saturation 3 days prior. I'll be working on Saturday numbers within the next hour or so.

 Re: Hunger Games Sellout Watch
Holy crap, you're right. My old theater just doubled their screen count for the weekend, from 4 to 8 screens. 8 screens (out of 16) is unprecedented for normal showtimes. I believe the old record was 6 or 7 for Spiderman 3 or Deathly Hallows. Insanity!

 Re: Hunger Games Sellout Watch
The 7th and 8th midnight shows at my theater have been added as well. Deathly Hallows didn't have their 7th and 8th midnights added until Thursday. It's just a matter of time before they add a 3am IMAX. Their midnight IMAX has been sold out for weeks. The AMC Barton Creek in south Austin has already added a 3am IMAX, so my theater better get with the program, lol. I'll try to do a full update later tonight. This is getting really exciting

 Re: Hunger Games Sellout Watch
My theater is being slow in adding more midnight shows. All three available before this past weekend were sold out on Thursday, and a fourth was finally added yesterday. Instead of adding a few shows at once, they seem to be adding a single one once the previous show sells out.

 Re: Hunger Games Sellout Watch
I don't think the midnight number will be all that earth shattering. Considering this is a franchise opener, anything above 20 million is astounding.
The highest we've seen for a non-sequel is Twilight at just over $7 million

With IMAX boost, I think 25 million is attainable for midnights.

 Re: Hunger Games Sellout Watch
Third Saturday Sellout update for NoVA/DC Metro/MD area, as of 6:55PM EST Still no sellouts, but that's expected for Saturday. However, we've jumped up with 216 more showtimes, up to a total of 588. Again, approaching a saturation point that Breaking Dawn, as the most recent big opener, wasn't even able to reach.

 Re: Hunger Games Sellout Watch
Fifth Friday (non-midnight) sellout update for NoVA/DC/MD, as of 8:25PM EST Up to 12 sellouts now on a whopping 626 showtimes. That's 2 sellouts and 57 added showtimes in just the LAST 2.5 HOURS. Friday looks like its going to be enormous, and is looking a little stronger than DH2 in this area if not on par (though did have 3D).
