 Re: Friday Numbers
TF3 should have the biggest opeing weekend so far which is quite impressive as it burned off 64 million in demand and will still make around 18-20 million Monday.

 Re: Friday Numbers
TF3 should stay relatively flat today, ala 2005. That's a solid Friday boost for it, hopefully not TOO much because of Canada Day (heard LOTS of sellout reports there). Then with a -15% drop Sunday and 35-40% drop on Monday, it should come very close to $180m. TF1 adjusts to a little over $177m 6-day, interestingly enough.

 Re: Friday Numbers
Wow it actually increased more than War of the Worlds?! That's crazy. I'm glad it's rebounding.

 Re: Friday Numbers
For comparison, TF2 increased 26% Friday while TF3's increase is well over 50%. That's a fantastic rebound. Hopefully Potter doesn't top it for No.1 of the summer/year, though I'd love to see it pull a ROTS/ROTK for the sake of great BO.

 Re: Friday Numbers
Personally, I still don't think TF2 is the best model to use. It didn't release on a double-holiday weekend (or even a single one), so its internal drops are going to have a very different context.

I'm just basically saying it's behaving less frontloaded than TF2. WotW is probably the best comparison to use, if that's what you're saying.

 Re: Friday Numbers
I would just like to point out that, in this particular instance, the instant negativity and Debbie Downer-ness running rampant throughout the forum after the film's opening day were, of course, TOTALLY OFF. Eat it.
Can't wait to repeat this cycle every weekend of the summer!

 Re: Friday Numbers
TF3 is ether very back loaded or WOM is kicking in. 3 days ago it looked like MTC was right on point. Now they are way off.

 Re: Friday Numbers
Given the Friday #'s and the fact that there seems to be minimal frontloaded with this one, I'm really very interested to see what Saturdays number might be. Though it was a holiday in Canada yesterday, the fact of the matter is that the US which makes up 90% of the North American BO still had a work day yesterday, and so this might have a decent bump Saturday too, since the people who wanted to see it ASAP already rushed out Wednesday and it seems the casual moviegoers waited for the weekend.
Even a 10-15% increase for Saturday I think would be incredible!!

 Re: Friday Numbers
I can't speak for everyone, but I know a lot of people that had shortened work days in the U.S. too. Some even had the whole day off. Its an extended holiday weekend for some, so that may be a factor as well.

Disappointing for Larry Crowne and Monte Carlo, although they could possibly have good legs. The audience at my showing of Larry Crowne last night was one of the oldest I've ever been in attendance at, even more than when I saw The King's Speech. So that could benefit it.
Cars' plunge is alarming but presumably it will rebound over the weekend. Bad Teacher will stabilize as well. 175m is still weak, I agree people react far too quickly and assume too much with the slightest piece of evidence, but given the 250m+ predictions for 6 days, it's still not great. It'll still have a hard time beating the original, which given 4 years of inflation and the increase of the sequel is not very good.

That's putting it in an unfair context in some ways. Sequels pay for the sins of their predecessors, but at the end of the day TF3 is still on pace to become the biggest opener of the year and the #1 grosser of the year (maybe temporarily though). Relative to the market and keeping realistic expectations in mind after the second film's poor word of mouth, this is a solid opening. It may not break any records but its still doing quite well financially. Maybe not as much in terms of ticket sales, but the rebound from Wednesday is still good.

 Re: Friday Numbers
You have to give TF3 some serious credit. It didn't even crack $40M on Wednesday, but still has a shot at being the number 1 film of the year. I know it didn't reach most expectations like that $400M+ club, but it't still holding up really well and when all is said and done atleast it's going to outgross the first movie and not go under $300M. We need as many $300M+ films as we can get this year for boxoffice sake.

TF3 is at least proving to have some good WOM so far and that may help it somewhat in the long run. Probably not as much as the first film, but still, enough to help make up for the slightly disappointing opening day.

 Re: Friday Numbers
Another good hold for Bridesmaids. -39.8% drop from last Friday despite losing 642 theaters.
The biggest drop for Midnight in Paris yet but still a really good hold. Larry Crowne did hurt it a bit.

Boy, we sure committed an irrational, cardinal sin with that one. Anyway, this is really a great number for Transformers 3. I have no doubt this is WOM convincing people who had given up after 2 to come show up. It once again has a shot at being #1 of the year now (God, I hate this stupid fucking franchise ).

It's just illustrative of a common trend (sickness?) on this forum: y'all are so trigger happy with every minute set of data that it becomes this endless cycle of bitching and grave dancing. And this doesn't just happen with Transformers, it happens with pretty much everything. A movie is declared an outright flop at, like, 5 PM the day it opens because of some random number Nikki Finke throws out, and no one even attempts to reason that one day does not tell the full story.

I've thought about this, and I really do believe the difference is early numbers. When the old-timers here were at BOM, we didn't get constant updates. We had to wait, discuss, be hopeful, be worried. But now at 3 p.m. we can have a fairly solid number, so the arguing begins.
