 Re: Titanic 3-D/IMAX Re-Release
If they release this in spring 2012, it could do quite well, as there would be a lot of publicity from the 100th anniversary of the Titanic sinking (also the 15th anniversary of the film). I really don't think they should release it at any other time than spring or early fall though.

ICK. No, thank you. The majority of the movie wouldn't even benefit from being 3D anyway...
Now, Lord of the Rings, on the other hand... THOSE are extra-long movies I'd go see again in 3D.

 Re: Titanic 3-D/IMAX Re-Release
Em, what? Practically everything having to do with the ship-and that's virtually everything-would be impacted by the 3D and IMAX additions.
And I don't think Titanic is extra-long at all. It's one of the most well-paced films I've ever seen. And besides, it got people to watch it 129m times in North America the first round, I don't see why it couldn't get some of them to return to see it in a radically new way. It would take less than 1/10th of its original audience for the film to get past $100m.

 Re: Titanic 3-D/IMAX Re-Release
Titanic's domestic total adjusts to about $950m. Its overseas gross was more than double its domestic one, a ratio that is still extremely rare and was unheard of then. Given the weakness of the dollar, the burgeoning global film market, and its vast and unrivaled popularity, it would probably translate to a least $2.2B, maybe $2.5B overseas.
I honestly believe that for a film at this moment to have an impact equivalent to Titanic's worldwide in 1997/1998, it would have to make around $3-3.5B worldwide.
$300m in Japan, $200m+ in UK, France, Germany, $100m+ in China, Italy, etc. etc. etc.

Sound of Music didn't have a re-release because it never left theatres. It's still playing.

Box, your avatar is distracting. @_@ Is that Kris Allen as well?
Anyway.
I'd see it. And I only saw it on DVD originally, never in the theather. I might be the only woman in Europe who can claim that.

 Re: Titanic 3-D/IMAX Re-Release
I only ever saw it on VHS. Almost dozed several times.
To be honest, the reason Titanic made it so big was all those squealing DiCrapio fangirls who saw it 20 times or more.... He doesn't have NEARLY the kind of following he used to. People have moved on to hotter and better actors. Plus, that was back when ticket prices were cheaper and the economy was better. Nowadays... yeah, I can't see people going to see Titanic in 3D more than maybe twice, if that. We must remember about the upcharges.

Leo is hotter and pretty much the best actor working right now.
So they've moved from him... to him.

Joy Yeah but one ticket now is equivalent to two or three back then. I know most theaters charge $12-$14 for a 3D ticket, back in 1997 I saw movies for like $4, $5.50 at night. Anyway, it will be huge. I know I'd be there opening night. Easily a $30-$40 million opening and probably a good $150-$200 million domestic total.

 Re: Titanic 3-D/IMAX Re-Release
*sigh* Repeat viewings were due to people loving the movie, not a particular actor. I didn't watch it 5 times in a theater because of DiCaprio (i'm not gay), or Winslet for that matter, but because of the whole package. Those "teenage girls crazy about DiCaprio watching Titanic 20 times" stories are hearsay or at best isolated cases.

 Re: Titanic 3-D/IMAX Re-Release
They were absolutely not isolated cases. I remember kids at my school competing with each other to see who saw the film the most number of times.
Having said that, repeat viewings accounted for only a fraction of the film's total admissions. I discussed this somewhere else.

Not more than $100 million, I'd say. Not nowadays.

She rarely even sees a movie twice theatrically. She saved all of the ticket stubs. Anyway, I saw it once in theaters and once when it hit VHS . I loved it back then, but my love for it has died. Now I think it's lame. I think there are a lot of people who feel the same way. TITANIC is so 1998 . I wouldn't go see it again.

Just curious Mike, how old were you in 1998? And your cousin?

 Re: Titanic 3-D/IMAX Re-Release
Quote: Jack and Rose's "Titanic" love will indeed go on... and on... and on thanks to a newly announced 3D makeover. The MTV Movies Blog caught up with "Titanic" director James Cameron at Comic-Con where he revealed his plans to "dimensionalize" the 1997 blockbuster.
Working on the upcoming 3D flick "Avatar" is what inspired James Cameron to give his watery epic the multi-dimensional makeover. According to Cinematical, the process will take one year to 14 months to complete, meaning the revamped film could likely hit the big screen sometime in 2011, probably around the much-coveted holiday season. It's on.
I think a good indicator will be how Toy Story does. Whatever that makes, I'd say 2-3x more for this. I personally think it could make another $150m, especially with higher 3D/IMAX ticket prices in 2011.

The 100th anniversary in April 2012 could allow it to be a must see event even then.

 Re: Titanic 3-D/IMAX Re-Release
I don't know if a film like Toy Story will tell us anything. The difference between the two is so huge.
I can see everyone who saw it back in 97/98, and those who saw it in the past 10 years on video and loved it will return to see it in 3D at least once. Depending on how big 3D/Imax is in 2011/2012, it could become a serious contender for a top spot for the year imo especially if it runs well into april for the 100th as O suggested.
