Re: The MAMMA MIA! tracking thread. ($229M ww...$64m in UK!!!)
With more than half of it's territories to go and steaming juggernaught performances across Europe, it looks like Mamma Mia's ww total could even exceed Sex and the City.
I don't think anyone would have called that after SATC. I had a feeling Mamma Mia would ignite, but not to this extent after the heights of SATC already this summer.

Total: $229,999,338 Thanks, that international figure differs from the Variety one though, where'd you find it? http://www.uip-boxoffice.com/boxweb.nsfThe Variety one was the early weekend estimates i think.

Awesome, thanks Adam!
Just so you know, from what i can see of the industry, and i think this varies, but for every $12 a movie grosses at the box office in the UK, the actual net minus expenses etc is around $2.20-$4.
That is before accounting for the cost of the movie and marketing expenses, thats just minus theatrical share and deals / vat etc.

The weekday legs are great in the UK amazing. If my calculations are correct, it made just over $8m during the weekdays. It should ovetake Indy within a week or two. It will be in Top 20 all time box office. No mean feat considering its a not part of a major movie franchise and it's a musical.

Re: The MAMMA MIA! tracking thread. ($234M ww...$64m in UK!!!)
As well as Mamma Mia's soundtrack having officially topped the UK music charts several times now, the ABBA GOLD compliation has benefited from the films release and has now topped the UK charts for a fourth time, and stands as the #4th biggest album of all time in the UK.
It's sales in April were recordded at 4.1 million in the UK, so by now with this resurgence i'd expect it to be at 4.5m, maybe more?
I still cant quite believe how strong it is in the UK considering it only debuted to $12.something million, thats a huge opening for a film of this type, but still, not many $12m openers make it past $35m never mind $60m

It has now grossed more than $20m AUD in Australia. Sex is only $6m away. so it should pass it easily.

Re: The MAMMA MIA! tracking thread. ($234M ww...$64m in UK!!!)
JHust an update, my aunt took my second cousin to go see this on Tuesday early afternoon, 12.30pm, and there were six sold out showings between 1-3, she managed to get them two seats in a sellout. I expect another massive week.
My parents are going to see it tomorrow night.
There are people who never go near a movie theater heading out for this one, and reports of, shock horror, people singing and dancing along to the movie. My crowd tried to half clap at the end but failed when the rest stonewalled them.
Apparently though, clapping is commonplace for this movie, all of these things are VERY rare for a British audience. I mean no one even clapped after WALL-E or The Dark Knight here.

That's insane!! I can't believe i didn't notice it was doing so amazingly well Both films are getting glowing WOM, but i think Wall-Es drop can be put down to a steep second weekend decline combined with the lack of awareness due to a poor marketing campaign in the UK. It didnt have the focus and long-term drive that it should have.

Re: The MAMMA MIA! tracking thread. ($277M ww)
The UK is going to generate nearly $100,000,000 for this movie, which, is of course, ridiculous. The only movies to make north of $100m are
ROTK, Titanic and some of the Harry Potter movies. Essentially, what its made in GBP matters more.
But essentially, its made over £40m already, which means its already top 12 in GBP, is about to top BRIDGET JONES and has already pwned...
- Love Actually - Independence Day - Finding Nemo - Die Another Day - The Matrix Reloaded - Noting Hill - Chicken Run - Spider-Man - Shrek - POTC
It looks like its going to end up topping BRIDGET JONES DIARY and could end up being top ten of all time in GBP, and top three in US Dollars.

By the way, the figures suggest anywhere between 4.1-5.5 million people have seen Mamma Mia! in theaters.

5.6 mln 5th weekend in UK and 77.8 mln. total - about 38 mln. in british pounds. In a couple of days should beat Indy and become top grossed movie of the year.

Misutaa wrote: Michael. wrote: By the way, the figures suggest anywhere between 4.1-5.5 million people have seen Mamma Mia! in theaters. So would that translate to about $170-180 million in the states? Very crudely it would translate to around $200,000,000. But the UK audience is a very different audience from America, we are warmer towards female skewing films, and this is going to be top ten of all time for us. So essentially if we looked at it that way it's comparative gross would be more like $350m+. Here it's outgrossing The Dark Knight which is HUGE in its own right. The UK audience don't turn out to the theaters in the numbers Americans do, largely because our ticket prices are higher (think double a US ticket) so Mamma Mia is a cultural phenom here on the scale of any top 20 all time US Blockbuster was for you guys. Maybe moreso because its a machine, and continues to generate hype over a month after release. There are a lot of complex differences in the market that makes a US to UK population ratio transfer of figures wildly inaccurate, so that $200m number is not indicative of the actual impact or true success of the film here. The last movie i can think of with this kind of longevity and buzz is Bridget Jones, but Mamma Mia has truly crossed over and reached audiences Bridget Jones and any US hollywood film couldn't dream of catching. It's caught all of the ABBA fans, it's caught the Musical fans, It's caught people who enjoy west end musicals, its caught young girls, its caught couples, its caught gay men, it's caught an entire audience who wouldn't dream of theater going. We also have a system called Orange Wednesdays here which are actually very very popular. It involves orange customers getting 2 for 1 cinema tickets each wednesday, where attendance spikes as a result, so a lot of the time, when you consider concessions and orange wednesdays, UK box office figures are not always fair indicators of the numbers of attendees. I hate to be smug, Thats a lie, i love it, but i told y'all this would happen!

I was just thinking this must be reaching the equivalent of a ROTK/POTC kind of level, so $350m+ yeah, definitely agree. It already has a multiplier approaching 6 after its fifth weekend, who knows how much more it could take??

Oh and for the record im 70% sure that Orange Wednesdays only count the paying customer and do not count the free ticket in box office returns, they do however, count the second customer in the distributors admissions information so the net reflects accordingly.
