Nobody should care, rightfully. Mamma Mia! was expected to make around that and SC was expected to flop.

I care. Mamma Mia's opening is absolutely fantastic considering it went up against a movie that opened to $155 million.

It beat Hairspray's opening, which had more theaters and a *much* lower amount of competition, and Hairspray was seen as a resounding success.

So hats off to Mamma Mia.

ANYWAY, this is an incredible weekend, needless to say. Just absolutely mind-bogglingly incredible for The Dark Knight.

The top 10 alone totals nearly $250M.

MM was tracking around that. TDK wasn't expected to open like it did. TDK made more in two days than MM will make total.

Just because Mamma Mia was tracking around what it opened to doesn't lessen how good its opening was, though.

By its own standards, Mamma Mia`s opening is as great as TDK`s. The film had no right to make any more than $15m against TDK. It`s done extremely well for itself, and as Magnus said, it has a great shot at $100m+. If it can make this much against such intense competition, then that`s a good sign it will stay strong in the weeks to come.

This movie is a juggernaut and I honestly think we will not see a movie with TDK's peformance, OD, OW or entire run for some time now.

I think Mamma Mia! will see good legs. If wom is anything like it is here, combined with the fact that a lot of its potential aud was eaten away by TDK, i expect we will see good holds.

Absolutely amazing opening for The Dark Knight. Not much more can be said that hasn't been already.

Oh, and ladies & gentlemen, the top 10 did better then the top 12 did over the 4-day Memorial Day Weekend record. :whaa:

My only worry with Mamma Mia! is that is isn't very American and imo, that will prevent it from getting amazing legs. But also Mamma Mia is a bigger play than Hairspray so... I still think it will get over 100 million.

Also id like to point out that there was insane talk the few days before TDK came out that the studio were hoping for a $160-180m opening weekend. Seriously.

They on the record were saying $90-110m, but apparently they expected this huge start.
high teens to low 30s, so it busted in on the high end of those expectations. I feel $120-135m is achievable for Mamma Mia, and obviously $380m+ is in the bag for TDK, so to have movies with combined gross of $500m or more released on the same day it's just incredible.

You can't compare these films because Mamma Mia! has a targeted audience, The Dark Knight has complete four quadrant control.
