Well this year has been pretty bad so far, only Spiderman and Pirates 3 have done well.

Last year did delvier several movies above $60m, like Tales of Earthsea and Pirates 2.

Pirates looks to be a $90-100m contender, and Spiderman 3 at about $60m.

Harry Potter should do at least $90m.

That sounds right for those three, just wonder how Transformers would do. I wouldn't be surprised to see it around 80 considering the issues in Japan.

After King Kong, I know that nothing is locked here......to this day i still can't understand why it did so badly there....you had the PJ name and that Dino monster match up....what gives... :cry: :cry:

World Premier of Bay's 'Transformers' in Seoul

http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/ar ... _4448.html

The director and star of the anticipated blockbuster ``Transformers'' will hold a press junket in N Seoul Tower tonight, before its world premier across Korean theaters on June 28.

It is the first time a Hollywood film is having its opening event in Korea.

Iconic director Michael Bay (``Armageddon,'' ``The Rock'') and up-and-coming actress Megan Fox, the heroine of the film, will be talking to journalists and fans alongside the actual model of the film's ``character'' Autobot Bumblebee, towering 5.2 meters and weighing 3.7 tons.

As the junket is the film's first official red carpet event, some 50 international media personnel will visit the capital. Asia premiers are usually hosted in Hong Kong or Tokyo, so this Seoul event marks the country's growing international significance in the cinematic world.

Produced by film master Steven Spielberg, ``Transformers'' is about two dueling alien races, the Autobots and the Decepticons, that bring their battle to Earth. The future of mankind remains hanging in the balance as the robotic creatures -- hidden in the form of cars and motorbikes -- ``transform'' to reveal their superpowers.

The science-fiction story is also a popular American comic book by Marvel Comics and an animated series by Sunbow Productions. Fans worldwide thus enthusiastically wait to see ``Transformers'' onscreen.

===============================

This is indeed a surprise, you would think that the logical choice would be Tokyo, Japan.

However, I think the Japanese are spoiled this year in terms of world premieres, the had Spiderman 3 and will also host the world premiere of Harry Potter 5 (to halt the declining grosses of the movies there perhaps.. :tongue: ) on June 28th.

Pirates 3 of course made its World Premiere in the USA, Ocean's 13 in Cannes, France and Spiderman 3 also had a big premiere in London. Fantatsic Four will be making its World Premiere in London on June 12th.

Now Seoul, as the article says, no big movie has opened there before. This is a risk indeed as world premieres are normally in the US, London, France or Japan.....of course with the odd exception of LOTRs for obvious reasons.

But the importance of South Korea cannot be denied, the market there is very strong and like Japan, is a key influencer in the Asian region. It has delivered a $30m+ gross for both Spiderman 3 and Pirates 3 (records) and has just delivered Shrek the 4th largest opening weekend of all-time at $11.27m. Not too shabby.

Transformers will be a strong opener here no doubt....and may challenge SM3 and Pirates 3 for the opening weekend crown. It currently sits at $18.4m with Pirates 3 and $17.3m for Spiderman 3.

===

Oh BTW - you can listen to the new Goo Goo Dolls song for Transformers "Before It's Too Late"....pretty average, doesn't have a very strong hook......nothing like Iris....

I think it didn't go to Tokyo because Potter is opening there like you said. Probably would be too close to that mega premier.

It's noice to spread out the world premiere, so that each big market has something to get excited about....

OKAY stupid me, it just occured to me that the Transformers and the Harry Potter 5 premieres are on the freakin same day....June 28th....yeah i know, should've read the article closer.....stupid.

Interesting indeed.....should be interesting to see which one generates more buzz......

Apparently, Bay and Fox are in Korea at the momment doing the Asian junket...

You can also check some pictures here: http://www.iesb.net/index.php?option=co ... ey=1&hit=1

=====

Great news for worldwide "Transformers'' fans: Bay explained that the film's finale was left slightly open-ended because there might be " two, three, four and five and so on.

"But that all depends on you up there,'' he said to a crowd of Koreans gathered near the venue's terrace. Someone yelled "Hell yeah!'' and Bay smiled, "Alright, there you go.''

=====

There better be more than 1....LOL, they can go a long way with this as there's so many stories to tell and characters to introduce. I think the second one will be a much bigger success....ala X-Men 2, Pirates 2....etc. :happy:

Aussie star dazzles at 'Transformers' premiere

http://www.yourmovies.com.au/news/?action=news&i=120102

Australian actress Rachael Taylor joined co-star Megan Fox and director Michael Bay at the Sydney premiere of "Transformers" on Tuesday night.

Hoyts Entertainment Quarter was transformed into a metallic wasteland, complete with a "camouflage" carpet, bright lights and screaming fans.

"Transformers" is based on the popular 1980s children's franchise, which spawned toys, TV series and a 1986 movie. Bay's new feature film adaptation transfers the action to a modern-day environment and stars Taylor, Fox, Shia LaBeouf and Josh Duhamel.

Aussies may recognise Taylor from her roles in "McLeod's Daughters" and "Headland".

If the rowdy cinema audience is any indication, "Transformers" is set to be a massive box office hit. The crowd applauded several times, including rapturous cheers during the end credits. The special effects set a whole new standard for the film industry, with Bay showing off his signature flair for big-budget action sequences.

"Transformers" releases in cinemas on June 28.

----------------------------

LOL, it premiered 2 days ago and I had no idea....LOL :lol:

My my, Michael Bay and Megan Fox do get around, weren't they in Korea a couple of days ago. And where the hell are the other actors, Shiaf Labeouf, Josh Duhamel and Tyler... :|

And that translates to about 25-27m$. Which is 30% of ROTK's gross and 45% of DMC's. Still, not widely popular. ;)

Well, why are you comparing it to ROTK, they have nothing in common, nor DMC for that matter.

We should be comparing it against movies like War of the Worlds, King Kong, Terminator 3, Matrix reloaded.....movies with sci-fi element or appeal more to the male crowd.

War of the Worlds only did, 2.717.801 admissions
King Kong at 2.539.841 adms.

So a 3m+ admissions will be very good for Transformers.

If it can stick it with War of the Worlds in Europe, spurred by better exchange rates and inflation....coupled with the fact that it'll do just as well if not better in Asia....it can beat WOTWs overseas.

Hollywood dominates Korean B.O.

http://www.variety.com/article/VR111796 ... id=13&cs=1

By DARCY PAQUETSEOUL -- Hollywood blockbusters continue to subdue their Korean counterparts, with "Shrek the Third" easily fending off competition from big-budget local costumer "Hwang jin yi."
The green ogre opened on 450 screens on Wednesday and amassed $11.3 million in five days, the best opening ever for an animated pic.

Cinema Service's "Hwang jin yi," based on the life of Korea's most famous courtesan/poet, opened wider on 489 screens but grossed only $4.9 million. The film features star wattage in actress Song Hye-gyo, but has received a lukewarm response from local crix.

Faring somewhat better is arthouse title "Secret Sunshine," which was boosted when Jeon Do-yeon took home an actress award at last month's Cannes Film Festival. In its third week, the film has now grossed $9.4 million -- a significant achievement for a film that can hardly be considered audience-friendly. It remains at No. 4 at the box office.

With grosses of $34 million and $31 million respectively, "Spider-Man 3" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" rank as the year's highest grossing films.

Meanwhile, yet another Hollywood blockbuster got an early start when Michael Bay's "Transformers" held the world's first press screening in Seoul on Monday. Pic is the focus of an Asia-wide junket -- the first of its kind to be held in South Korea -- which Bay and actress Megan Fox attended.

"Transformers" will preem on June 28 in South Korea, a week before the July 4 Stateside launch.

The decision to open in South Korea recognizes fact that, for titles of this kind, the country can produce box office grosses not far off from Japan or Blighty. Early launch will also give film an extra week in theaters before "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" hits on July 13.

Observers might also be forgiven for interpreting this as Bay's thanks to a country that turned another of his pics, "The Island," into one of the strongest hits of 2005. Pic underperformed in virtually every other territory.

================

Ah yes, totally forgot about this important fact.

The Island (~3.4-3.5m adms) was one of the surprises of 2005....it defeated War of the Worlds and had one of the leggiest runs that year....recent movies like DVC, 300 could not even top it...

Bodes well for Transformers, it could well pull in more than 4m admissions...
