Superman? What's that?

I'd rather save my money and watch Smallville.

Yeah I do agree with Excel that Snakes on a Plane crowd reaction is very questionable although Im looking very forward to the film. It could be the same reaction you get if you see a Kungpow or Team America trailer. People may think the trailer is clever and hahaha very funny but its another thing that they would really want to see it.

As a loonie i must strongly object. And add a *lol*.

Just because Kong didn't make gazillion of dollars doesn't mean it wasn't a success. It grossed over half a billion in theaters, sold a great lot of DVDs and was critically, as well as by the public, very well received.

As a closet loonie, I agree with Nazgul. Jackson is still the king of Hollywood right now. KK did well here and well overseas. Translates into a very solid but unspectacular showing. But he is still on a high.

Superman will be lucky to make X3's first 7 days gross. In fact it wont beat it.

We have a winner - X3

As for Snakes - Im starting to agree with guys like Killuminati - it was a fanboy crowd that did all the cheering for it. It wont do aswell as alot of us think.

I don't think 200 mill is a disappointment either. I act ually think this is a risk bringing this film out. Its not like people were demanding another superman film. I want to see it, hell it's a summer film, and should be lots of fun. But that doesn't mean it is going to break records. It just seems that some have this delusional fantasy that Superman is going to swoop in with a massive haul. Not going to happen.

I'm telling ya, Christopher Reeve will have more of an effect on this movie than folks think.. Really, no one asked for another SUPERMAN movie and were content to let it die with Reeve's.. Not to mention the fact that what teen, even small kid, do you hear even talking abouit SUPERMAN??? By today's standards, he's bland, too goody too shoes and not a complex enough character when you consider what MARVEL has put out these days..

I didn't think the grassroots buzz for X3 was this strong (People are packing the theaters even with shoddy critical reviews). Now, I don't see a groundswell of support for Superman either but I've heard nothing but mediocre or negative buzz from people I've run into. This is not good and could be an indication of trouble ahead for Singer's baby.

You shall all stop speaking ill of the Snakes. If you do not you will be promptly strangled to death while you sleep by a Anaconda teaming with a boa constrictor. Do not underestimate the power of the snakes. They shall rule August.

I agree with this. Superman is an outdated character today. Spider-Man is America's new favorite superhero. Superman Returns will be seen as a Spider-Man wannabe, a superhero hero movie made to profit from the wave Spidey started (not to mention that the 2 films share real similarities).

Plus, Lex Luthor is a boring villain. People today want to see duels between powerful beings, not a superhero vs a normal guy. Look at X3 and RotSith: they both emphasized the idea of a duel (many duels in X3); I think that helps a lot in bringing crowds on opening day. It creates anticipation. Now if only SM3's marketing focused on Venom... :shades:

Obvious in this forum but not so obvious in other forums like imdb, rotten tomatoes and BOM. I read some of those threads stating that "since a crappy movie like X-3 can get 44 million, Superman Returns which is a more popular character and has the same X-men director will get a whole lot more".If only Baumer can post this thread at BOM also

I don't get all you Superman loonies. X3 has a built in fanbase. The second film was beloved by everyone. It had very strong dVD sales and this is Memorial weekend. All of these factors are in favour of X3. How does this translate to into high numbers for Superman? I don't think it does. The franchise is still 20 years old and the last really popular one was 25 yers ago. The loonies are licking their chops thinking that this is going to segue into huge dollars for Superman. Don't count on it. X3 marketed itself brilliantly as the last film, the last stand, the last time to see these people in action. This is brilliant. The marketing for Superman is lackluster and uninteresting. I believe that Superman will do fine, but certainly not anything more than a low 200. X3 will do that in about 10 days. Clearly the victor this summer is X3 over Superman. Bet on it.

i'll go with what BAumer said. X3 is the real victory of this summer.

Obvious to some, but a revelation to other Superman loonies here.

There is something to the idea that Supes lacks a credible villain, credible for audiences anyway. Moviegoers have been weened on superstrong, over the top villains, and Lex may not work for some people.

Thankfully, Superman Returns will make enough $$$ for sequels that will explore his rogue gallery, the likes of Brainiac, Doomsday or even Darkseid.

Magneto is not a typical villain either. He is one of the most morally complex comic book characters in existence, and is just as much an antihero as a villain. And audiences love him. It has to do with McKellen's commanding screen personality more than anything else.

the vast majority of people seeing superman returns will not be haters like BKB.

superman will beat X3 i believe, but it wont be by much.

i think theres a lot of underestimating superman here on these boards... just like there was when fellowship of the ring came out in 2001... i remember telling a lot of people on joblo.com how LOTR will outgross potter and everyone laughed.

i look at popular box office movies as ones that would pull people like my dad in... every film my dad has seen in the theatres in the past several years has destroyed the box office. a movie like this is what my dad and i plan on seeing on IMAX.

when you can get the 50 year old who hates movies in movie theatres to see the film with 10 year olds, youre gonna make some bank.

superman will eclipse 250 million... i guarantee it.
