It did. The writer's strike kind of delayed some tentpole films that were possible 2009 candidates. WB looked and saw that July 2009 was open for a tentpole, and that their 2008 yearly slate is doing great but its 2009 slate is looking bad, so they moved it. This is 100% a business move, and its a very smart one.

I think you are right. 2009 sucks for WB and they are looking at something to fill a void. That link trixter refers to must be about the rumor about the CGI not being ready but that is a rumor and there is no evidence it is true.

Hate the move. Not because of it's box office potential, but because we now have to wait another 8 months to see it. :(

LOL well I am not thrilled for that reason either. Of course some fans are taking to extremes. on the Coming soon forums there is one who has started a petition.

I'm a huge HP fan and I like the move. It is very, very possible that it could hit $320M+ becoming the highest grossing (unadjusted) in the series.

Atleast we still have Bond and Benjamin Button to anchor the fall. I'd be shocked if Bond didn't take HBP's spot.

I think Bolt just assured itself atleast $150M+. Plus, Bond will most likely hit around $210-225M now.

WB shareholders are already happy with 2008 thanks to TDK. The studio is looking to be no. 1 studio of the year even without HP6. Now, WB can keep their shareholders happy next year as well thanks to HP6. If they didn't have it in 2009, then their slate would be very weak and their shareholders would be upset with their 09 earnings being so drastically down from 08 (and they would have been drastically down). This is just one of the best business moves a studio has done in a long time.

Yeah thats the reason for the move. Pure and simple.

And it works all around really. Im liking the move. We get summer 09 improved and the Oct/Nov/Dec 08 films all have a chance to do better.

Infact this helps Twighlight big time as it will have alot more buzz (as a book sensation) without Potter ahead of it. Now November/December will r

I think what makes this release date change such a big thing (apart from it being Potter) is that it happened so soon before the release date. The only release date change as comparable was Titanic.

Post Re: The Official Movie Release Date Schedule
Ok lets look at October/November/December 2008 release dates and see what should move where;

(wide releases only)

October 3
- An American Carol
- Beverly Hills Chihuahua
- The Express
- How to Lose Friends & Alienate People
- Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist
- What Just Happened

October 10
- Body of Lies
- City of Ember
- Quarantine
- Sex Drive

October 17
- Flash of Genius
- Max Payne
- Morning Light
- The Secret Life of Bees
- W.

October 24
- Crossing Over
- High School Musical 3: Senior Year
- Pride and Glory
- Saw V

October 31
- The Haunting of Molly Hartley
- Zack and Miri Make a Porno
- RocknRolla (wide)
- Changeling (wide)
- The Brothers Bloom (wide)

November 7
- Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa (conventional theaters and IMAX)
- Quantum of Solace

November 14
- Australia
- Nothing Like the Holidays
- Role Models
- Soul Men

November 21
- Bolt (Disney Digital 3-D)
- The Soloist

November 26
- Four Christmases
- Transporter 3
- The Road (wide)

December 5

- Punisher: War Zone

December 12
- The Day the Earth Stood Still
- Twilight

December 19

- Seven Pounds
- The Tale of Despereaux
- Yes Man

December 25
- Bedtime Stories

One thing is clear - October is WAY overcrowded. Films from the 1st and last weeks of October should move to November and 2009...

House of Lies would be a good move.

And you know what might also work? Move TDTESS to the weekend before Thanksgiving. It has an epic feel and this is an epic film spot release date.

Australia may be your most over-predicted film ever.

And that's saying a lot.

Aside from SR, name 1?

Ack. I was looking forward to seeing this like I am every Harry Potter movie.

Maybe they're moving it to July because they're trying to, somehow, replicate some of the success of The Dark Knight. Which doesn't make that much sense considering a few of the past Harry Potters have been released in July before, but whatever, who knows, maybe they're thinking that.
