Posted this in the Friday Numbers thread:
Since 1982:
9 Never Cry Wolf ( 1983 ) $1,116,437 88 $12,686 10 Hannah and Her Sisters ( 1986 ) $1,265,826 54 $23,441 10 Hannah and Her Sisters ( 1986 ) $1,573,236 56 $28,093 10 Hannah and Her Sisters ( 1986 ) $1,187,652 64 $18,557 10 Crimes and Misdemeanors ( 1989 ) $911,385 66 $13,808 6 The Age of Innocence ( 1993 ) $2,317,289 83 $27,919 10 The Piano ( 1993 ) $1,502,325 99 $15,175 10 Schindler's List ( 1993 ) $1,283,885 74 $17,349 10 The Lion King ( 1994 ) $1,586,753 2 $793,376 8 Pocahontas ( 1995 ) $2,689,714 6 $448,285
That's it. It's been 10 years since Pocahontas. So BBM will be the first film in over ten years to crack the top 10 in less than 100 theatres.

That´s amazing.
Internal multiplier shouldn´t be very gigh, though, cause many shows already were sold out for yesterday and It is a bit frontloaded in the big cities. I´m thinking $2-2.2M for the weekend.

Well, the movie made $2,359,000 over the weekend. Close enough to my prediction. It now stands at $3,325,000 arter two days and its PTA this weekend is $34,188. Simply astonishing!
Next weekend it expands to 120+ theatres. What do you see for its gross? I see it remaining stable for around $2.4 million. So far I am very content with Focus' rollout strategy. I think the weekend after the next it should definitely go into 200 theatres, though.

I think it'll remain stable too. I'm very interested to see how it will hold on this family holiday without more outside award pushes until after new year.

That was exactly what I was thinking. A $20,000 PTA for a $2.4M.
Indeed, It would be interesting to see how It holds with no awards attention this week. Although It keeps making the headlines, one way or the other.

I say $2.5 million for the weekend and the 8th spot at the box-office this weekend. The weekend after that they should expand it to around 200 theatres if they are smart.
Actual weekend gross - $2,508,494
I rock!
Next weekend - $2.4 million
If they expand it to roughly 200 theatres the weekend after that, I see about $3.2-3.4 million in its 4th weekend.

Focus said that another wave of expansion is set for January 6th, but that by January 27th it'll be playing in over 300 (!) theatres nationwide.

from BOM
Quote: Foley said that the expansion will be more aggressive than previously planned, with around 275 theaters set for Jan. 6 and about 400 for Jan. 13. The original intent was to be in 300 venues by the end of January.

So, with its expansion, this is what I predict for the upcoming weekend's:
December 23-25: $2.4 million
December 30-January 1: $3.6 million
January 6-8: $3 million
January 13-15: $3.6 million
I actually expect it to stay very consistent if they continue to expand it by 100-200 theatres each weekend (a good strategy actually). It should be grossing between $3-5 million for quite a while each weekend.

They are also predicting it to do $6M which is, I think, far too much.

Well, Guru's prediction is for the 4-day weekend - still $6m seems too high, but $5m is doable - BM triples its theater count and made $2.5m last weekend...

If the count is right:
$6M: 27,600PTA
$5M: 23,000PTA
Even for the 4-day, I think both are a bit high. I´d say more like $4.2M, but maybe I´m just not that optimisstic.

Well, it is still holding 5,000 pta per day mid-week, so it's not too far of a stretch to think it will do about that each day of the long weekend. Depends on what cities are going to see expansion. I'd guess much closer to 5 million than 6, and maybe you're right and it will only do 20,000 pta (not 23) which would be mid 4 million. But here's hoping!

I hate predicting the 4-day weekend, so I say...
$3.8 million for the 3-day weekend.

Comparing with Crouching Tiger:
Weekend gross/ # of theaters/ PTA
CTHD
Dec 8-10: $663,205 - 16 - $42450
Dec 15-17: $1,078,762 - 31 - $34,798
Dec 22-24: $2,636,887 - 143 - $18,439
Dec 22-25: $3,695,485 - 143 - $25,842
Total by Christmas day: $6,533,541
BBM
Dec 9-11: $547,425 - 5 - $109,485
Dec 16-18: $2,508,494 - 69 - $36,354
Dec 23-25: ?
Dec 23-26: ? (guessing +5 million, which will put it at +10 million by the end of the weekend)
Brokeback is still ahead of CTHD, and should gain even more advantage this week, so.. it's doing great for now
Next month will be the true test though..

I don´t know, I think $5M is a bit of strech. But hopefully, you are right
