BJ, you found the data. Good.
And prepare to be shocked when POTC 2 falls over $200M short of Shrek 2.

C'mon JB. Keith Richard's cameo alone will bring in a good, what, 150 to 200 million?

Well with this year's numbers, I'm guessing it will do them quite good to tap into some new markets.

I'd expect Matrix Reloaded numbers. They're filming both sequels with incomplete scripts -- there's a high probability one or both of them may suck, and that's going to affect WOM/legs.

Naw. They've got good writers working on PotC, unlike with the Matrix. And I do believe they have a completed script for PotC2 (though granted it's as complete as *any* script and can change from day to day as filming progresses).
This is *not* going to disappoint like the Matrix sequels did. This one is going to be a huge hit.

Sure, why wouldn't they? Verbinski is not a writer and wouldn't have started filming without some sort of script, and the movie should be done with principal photography one Pirates 3 (started in August), Pirates 2 started post-production in June. I really didn't like Matrix 3, really didn't like it, but Warner Bros. should have held it for a year or two or opened it up in summer, I believe it would have done better.

Id say this will finish very close to the original - probably around $290-$300m.

Umm, actually, Richards won't be appearing in POTC2. IMDb.comQuote: Johnny Depp has missed out on the chance to star alongside Rolling Stone Keith Richards, because the rocker's schedule is too busy. The Charlie And The Chocolate Factory star had been looking forward to Richards making a cameo appearance as his dad in 2006's Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. But now the legendary guitarist, who was the inspiration behind Depp's alter-ego Jack Sparrow, is too busy with his band's world tour to take time out for acting. Depp says, "It doesn't look like it will happen now. Keith is on tour so it's hard to fit into the timeframe we're working to."
That was a huge letdown if you ask me. The scenes with Depp and Richards were my most anticipated scenes of 2006.

Just to note... The Two T's are listed on IMDb as working on Legend of Zorro, but their story/script was passed on. They talked about it on their discussion forum. And on Godzilla and Treasure Planet, they helped with the initial story, but things changed a lot after their work was done. They've talked about that, too, on their website.
Oh, yeah, according to their website, they were uncredited for helping on Men in Black... They were also uncredited for National Treasure as well (some problems with the WGA).
And what have the Wachowski Brothers written besides all their Matrix stuff? Not much. The Two T's were responsible for movies like Shrek (and creative consulting on Shrek 2), Road to El Dorado (which really was a great movie), Aladdin, Mask of Zorro, and of course, Pirates of the Caribbean. And if you take a look at their official filmography (*not* their IMDb pages), you'll notice that most of the movies they've worked on had other writers working on them as well. Only Pirates of the Caribbean (aside from the initial story from Wolpert and Beattie, which ended up changing a *lot*), Road to El Dorado, and Little Monsters had a screenplay written by *just* the Two T's.
I have 100% faith that they have written sequels that all Rumrunners can be proud of.
Joy
PS: I happened to like Treasure Planet... I don't see how it was bad; it was a great twist on an age-old plot. It worked for me.
PPS: Their *official* filmography is here:

I have much time to adjust this prediction, though I do expect the film to break the opening wknd record if it keeps the curent friday opening. breaking 400m and beating shrek 2 are still questionable though.
When you say my predictions are rediculously optomistic, are you reffering to most of my predictions or are you just speaking of this one?
I think you are undoubtably underestimating this film, 250m-260m

I remember calling Pirates 1 to have a huge opening weekend, but I think many didn't expect the monster legs this one sprung out after that. I see this sequel opening no less than the HP films, because the fanbase is definitely hungry for another one. This should be another Matrix: Reloaded, but probably with bigger legs and probably a bigger opening. Right now I see a 105 million opening / 315 million total, but I could see this topping 400 million, who cares if Superman Returns opens the next weekend

Oh YEAH! I'm mad about Pirates! YO HO YO HO, the PIRATES will SLAUGHTER the competition. I mean I don't think it's that farfetched, look how well the first one did while still in theaters. It had a 70 million 5-day, so that means the 3-day for that movie would have been something like 55~60. Extrapolate that with the Matrix series or the X-men series, which had much bigger sequel openings, and you can see that Pirates by far has a GREAT chance to open HUGE. You can quote me on that

the first would have opened around that amount if not for being a wednesday opener, you are under predicting.
