Doraemon debuts in the Top 5 on the Opening Weekend Charts (4th in Admissions), and The Tourist debuted well at 7th on all three Opening Weekend Charts.

The Opening Weekend Charts will continue to see new additions this month, with SP: The Motion Picture 2 and Tangled opening on the 12th.

The first SP opened to 529 million yen last October and finished with 3.63 billion yen ($44 million).

Advance sales are on par with Gantz (opened to 593 million yen) for the sequel according to Toho earlier this week. So, probably looking at 550-600 million yen ($6.6-7.3 million) for SP Revolution this weekend. I'm hoping it can crack 600 million yen with it skewing older than Gantz.

There are no good comparisons for Tangled. It obviously won't come near Pixar levels, but it's also not going to do as little as Dreamworks or other foreign CGI films based on it's reception and 3D... Bolt is Disney's biggest non-Pixar animated "recent" release, and it opened to 254 million yen. I'm thinking Tangled will be good for 300-350 million yen ($3.6-4.2 million) this weekend, which should be just enough to edge past Doraemon's second weekend to debut in second.

Rantaro will be aiming for 100 million yen, but will likely fall a bit short with 80 or 90 million yen.

Speaking of that Earthquake (mostly the Tsunami though), the stage greetings for the openers have been postponed, and many theaters have suspended business.

Basically saying the theaters listed have suspended their business for today and Saturday, and they'll update with further details soon.

As for the Box Office this weekend, it's not going to be pretty, and I'd expect 70% drops or greater across the board with all the blackouts and everything stopping public transportation, and now along with theaters being suspended. But that doesn't really matter given this terrible news. Hopefully it doesn't cause too many deaths, though the toll is unfortunately rising...

As expected, 60% drops or greater for the holdovers due to theater closings for the week, and the openers couldn't do much with limited screens.

Disney said it went ahead with its market opening of Tangled at 156 screens “despite the ongoing tragic conditions.” Reported two-day gross for the 3D reworking of the Rapunzel tale came in at $1.6 million.

Given Disney animation’s traditional popularity in Japan, that gross return is but a small fraction of what the Tangled opening would have provided under normal conditions. Still, the Japan return generated nearly half of Tangled’s total return of $3.5 million in its 15th weekend of foreign release at 2,539 screens. The film’s offshore gross totals $354.8 million, and its worldwide tally is $551.5 million.

Sony reported that The Tourist took in $1.3 million in Japan, a 65% box office drop in its second weekend at 217 screens. So far the romantic thriller costarring Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie -- which began its foreign run early last December -- has pulled an estimated $9.2 million out of Japan since its bow there on March 5. The weekend overall for The Tourist registered $2.2 million from 1,089 screens in 28 markets for a foreign cume of $198 million.

The King’s Speech, which opened in Japan on Feb. 26, dropped from No. 4 to No. 7 in the market on the weekend via Gaga Communications. Reliable figures for the Oscar winner won’t be available until Monday. Speech has grossed a total of about $6 million in Japan, and is bidding to break the $200 million foreign gross mark overall.

20th Century Fox reported that The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader -- which had been having a triumphant Japan run at the conclusion of a lengthy overseas campaign – managed to draw $1.49 million from 548 locations, with most of the business coming from southern Japan. Treader has pulled nearly $19 million out of Japan since opening there on Feb. 25. The film’s overseas cume stands at $298 million.

Tangled was to open on over 500 screens (got 156), and The Tourist (as well as the other holdovers - Narnia lost almost 400) lost many of their screens due to the closings.

No admissions or grosses have been available.

In movie news: Hereafter was pulled from Cinemas, and Mega-blockbuster Aftershock (opening on the 26th) has been cancelled indefinitely. Aftershock was originally to open on March 7th, but was delayed due to the Earthquake in New Zealand. So this is the second time being moved/delayed.

Precure All-Stars DX3 Mirai ni Todoke! Sekai o Tsunagu Niji-Iro no Hana, Takashi Otsuka's third film to combine the casts of all the Pretty Cure (Precure) magical girl television series to date, is still slated to open in Japan this Saturday, March 19. However, part of the film is being edited out since a tsunami scene or scenes "are reminiscent of the disaster."

Can probably expect more films to either be edited, delayed, or cancelled over the next month or two. Hereafter was the only film that was in release to have a disaster scene I believe, so all the other films currently playing look okay.

With the news on the Nuclear Reactors getting worse with every update, it's making me feel uneasy and uncaring continuing to post Box Office updates at the moment considering how unimportant any of it currently is... but this latest, terrible, news is affecting me quite a bit with how much I've studied the language and culture (moreso these past few years than anything I ever did in school). It's definitely become a huge part of my life, and I do it wholeheartedly because I love everything about that great country. I truly hope the Japanese people will hear some good, hopeful news soon so they can recover.

Released estimates,

SP: The Motion Picture - Revolution grossed an estimated 300 million yen ($3.7 million) over the weekend. Given the situation, such a gross is more than outstanding. The sequel would have easily made 700 million yen ($8.5 million) to become the biggest opener since Harry Potter last November under normal circumstances.

Tangled grossed an estimated 140 million yen ($1.7 million). The film likely would have hit 300 million yen ($3.7 million) or bit higher.

Some good news - some United Cinema locations reopened for business today.

I'll update more on this past Weekend's Box Office shortly.
