Dead Man's Chest and ROTK made more WW than TDK.

I didn't know that. Anyway. Even without China, it is probable that the $1billion happens today, if not, it will happen for sure tomorrow, after 17 days in theaters. Unbelievable!

You are right, it will be the 4th largest WW. ROTK and DMC are still between Titanic and Avatar WW.
I was just trying to make the point of passing TDK, which, by itself, is outstanding! (I edited my post to correct the typo :)

This is exciting. In the next few days we'll see Avatar break may records. This is one of them:
All-time highest domestic box office for a 3D movie!

I wonder what is taking them so long to update foreign estimates :( . Their current figure of $476,192,825 is from last Tuesday. By yesterday that figure should be over $600,000,000. Their WW total right now is EXTREMELY under-represented. They say as of Friday WW is $785,203,825, but in reality is well over $900,000,000. Why?

I keep reading 3D tickets cost 50% more, that's just not true. It's more like 25%.

Somewhere else i've read $2. Even $3 would be like 30% more as normal tickets cost about $7. I've also read that some IMAX don't charge 3D extra.

Quote:
The story of how "Monsters vs. Aliens" took in $58.2 million on its opening weekend sounds less like a success when you take note of the inconvenient facts. Even though only 2,100 of the 7,000 screens the movie opened on were equipped with 3D technology, reports Brooks Barnes, the 3D screenings "carried premium prices of up to $4 above the standard admission. So about 30 percent of the screens delivered 56 percent of the gross."

http://www.thewrap.com/blog-entry/2144

so the surcharge varies between 30-50%. the average rate difference is around 40%.

Here are a few examples.

Tysons Corner 16 AMC Fairfax, Va:

$8 child $11 adult non-3D, $11/14 for Avatar 3D. 37.5% and 27% increase.

Hampton 24 AMC Hampton, VA:

$5 child, $10 adult, 3D $8/$13, IMAX 3D $9/$14. Non 3D IMAX is $8/$13. For 3D 60% and 30%, for IMAX 80%, and 40%.

We have entered the "live ball" era of box office like in baseball when either the ball or the players were juiced. The rules of the game have changed.

I have also noticed that 2d showings have basically dried up in the theaters I monitor and screenings have improved to 12-14 range from the 10-12 range of the first weekend.
