 Re: Interstellar Domestic Predictions
Some fun facts:
Of all feature length films that have had scenes shot in IMAX, the lowest-grossing film domestically has been MI4: Ghost Protocol at $209M. The second-lowest has been Star Trek: Into Darkness at $229M.
So the absolute base gross, the floor for Interstellar domestically is $209M. Of course, the realistic base is somewhere near Inception's domestic total, so more around 290M or so.
The opening weekend will be irrelevant. Legs will be everything with this film.
The floor is one thing; the most interesting question is, what will the ceiling be?
I predict better legs than Inception. In fact, I predict some unusual and spectacular holds. If Sandra Bullock floating aimlessly in space for 90 minutes managed a 22% 2nd weekend drop, I expect Interstellar to do better.
In fact, I conservatively predict an OW of around 65M or so. From there, I predict stronger holds than Inception, because Interstellar does not have summer weekdays, so therefore weekend holds should be stronger, especially due to the amazing IMAX boost Interstellar will get.
I predict Interstellar's 2nd weekend drop may be as low as 15%, possibly even lower. From there it would be uncharted territory for a Nolan film in terms of holds.

 Re: Interstellar Domestic Predictions
A Sandra Bullock film where she drifts aimlessly in space fell22% because the special effects were a must see for the big screen. Interstellar will have to be just as boundary pushing for it to hold as well as Gravity.

 Re: Interstellar Domestic Predictions
Exactly. Gravity created a sense that it was a must-see event on the big screen and a must-must-see event on an even bigger screen (IMAX). As yet, I don't think Interstellar has that.

 Re: Interstellar Domestic Predictions
I don't think this will have the 4.9 multiplier that Gravity had. I could see 4.0. But with a $70+ mil opening, it has a shot at $300 mil.

 Re: Interstellar Domestic Predictions
I'm sorry but I just can't see this making more money than Gravity and thinking this will have a second week drop of 15% or lower is completely ridiculous. I'm sure it's a great movie, I love Nolan but the last trailer wasn't very good at all and I've heard very, very few people talking about it. I'm sure it will make $200-$250 million but I don't think it's going to go much further than that. There is a lot of competition in November too.

Interstellar will have to be just as boundary pushing for it to hold as well as Gravity. You haven't seen nothing yet. Nolan has super duper held back this time. Interstellar's marketing has been held back MUCH more than Inception's marketing. The special leaked IMAX trailer for Interstellar already has more boundary-pushing shots than anything I saw in Gravity. Interstellar is going to be a bigger must-see event than Gravity, just you watch. Nolan hasn't disappointed me yet. Years ago, way back even before everyone jumped onto the The Dark Knight hype train ahead of release, I already knew The Dark Knight was going to be something special. When I first watched Memento many years ago, and then subsequently Batman Begins and The Prestige, I knew this was a special director. Nolan delivered with The Dark Knight big-time. I then predicted he would smash expectations with Inception, which he did. He delivered again with The Dark Knight Rises. He will yet again deliver with Interstellar. I'm calling it now, Interstellar will smash even more expectations and be a bigger crowd-pleaser than Inception. Chippy wrote: I don't think this will have the 4.9 multiplier that Gravity had. I agree, it will have a higher multiplier than that. Right now I'm feeling a multiplier of over 5 at least. Brian wrote: People used to think and comment the same exact things before the release of Inception Correct. Years way back I was posting on another forum, and people called me a crazy loon for making huge predictions for Inception. Way back, many months before Inception's release, I predicted a 270M domestic gross, with a 64M OW, and people thought I was bonkers. Magnus wrote: man im so ready to go into berserk Nolan fanboy mode on this once the reviews start to come out.
YALL HAVE NO IDEA WHATS ABOUT TO HIT This. This all the way. You preach the truth my good man. We are on the same page. People don't know what's coming. I've already got my 70mm IMAX tickets locked and loaded for Tuesday night, first night of advance screenings. I also predict reviews will be bonkers. Just wait till the opening weekend numbers start coming in, and people start seeing the holds.

I agree with Algren. The Dark knight Rises was a shitty movie. But unfortunately, most people liked it.

 Re: Interstellar Domestic Predictions
Couldn't have liked it that much. Larger opening, much smaller total than The Dark Knight.

Thatguy just makes bold statements as fact without backing them up with any reasoning. That's the definition of a fan boy.

When I saw all that jizz splashing his mom's vagina, I knew that single sperm that could was going to be a special director.

I never saw Batman Forever or Batman Returns, but as far as I'm concerned, The Dark Knight is the only decent Batman movie.
