I think the difference between Alexander, Troy, Kingdom of Heaven, etc. and PotC is how well the story is executed. PotC's story was executed wonderfully, and that led to people going to see it *multiple* times in the theater; I myself saw it 10 times at the theater, and that's on the extremely *low* end of the scale compared to other PotC fans--some fans saw it more than 30 times!
It was a fun movie to which one could escape from reality for 2.5 hours. That's why I loved it. I was having a tough time at home, so I retreated to the movie theater, to put all thoughts of real life behind me and escape for 2+ hours.
That was the appeal of PotC. The promise of an escape. And it delivered upon that promise.
You need to take into account that most sequels that bomb do so because they don't have the same cast, they don't have the same crew, and they don't have the same writers. PotC: Dead Man's Chest has all of that, and more.
You need to take into account the fact that the writing duo of Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio has brought us such movies as Aladdin, Mask of Zorro, Shrek, and PotC. They also were involved in Shrek 2, which is a movie you keep citing on here. If anyone can bring about a successful sequel, it's the Two T's.
It is still an entire year before the PotC sequel premieres, and already people are hyped. It was the fans that gave PotC such good legs. Those fans have not moved on; in fact, the fandom has increased significantly. So, there will be *more* people going to see PotC2 than did the first, and those people will go to see it more than one time; I can guarantee it right there.
I think it can make just as much as PotC did, and probably much more.
Just out of curiousity, though... What movies will be in direct competition of PotC2? All the major stuff that already has a date looks to be earlier in the summer, just like what happened in 2003. So, I think PotC2 has a huge chance at making good at the box-office.

POTC will easily have the biggest weekend ever - about 135-140m (3-Day)...
The question will be: will it also destroy the 50m-record of Star Wars? It could be possible ...
Also: This will be the 3rd film to reach the 1-billion-mark worldwide!

I never thought I'd see the day that such a great predicter would predict such a huge opening...
Now I must agree and join this movement to break the opening weekend record

That had absolutely nothing to do with the success of the movie.
In fact, POTC was made (along with The Haunted Mansion and The Country Bears) for the sake of Disneyworld, if I recall correctly.

I'm not jumping on the opening weekend bandwagon just yet. Does it open on a Wednesday or a Friday?
Let's remember such films as The Matrix Reloaded. A cult film that had amazing legs (The Matrix) and a huge following on DVD. The film opened to an amazing $93 million + $40 million on Thursday. If it had opened on Friday would we have seen $130+ million opening weekend? Doubtful. People would have avoided packed theaters just as they will with PoTC2.
There is only a certain ceiling a film can hit, and while PoTC2 may challenge it, its not going to break it. Notice that even massive films from the last few years have not managed to open more then $115 million. We've had three films with $100+ million weekends and they all fall fairly close together to each other. There is a reason, don't you think?
All I'm saying is that while PoTC2 will be huge, it won't be $160 million huge. I"m thinking more in the range of $115 million opening weekend and $360 million overall.
Oh, and do remember that DP07 predicted $70 million for The Ring Two!

I think that's the difference right there between POTC (and LOTR) and the historical epics. POTC is not based in reality with its ghosts, cursed treasures, etc. The epics are (even really Troy as they got rid of the Greeks gods). Is it some coincidence that the top films of all time are overwelmingly sci-fi, fantasy, or some other form of departure from reality?

If it had opened on Friday would we have seen $130+ million opening weekend? Doubtful. People would have avoided packed theaters just as they will with PoTC2. Reloaded simply was not big enough overall to open with that much. Quote: There is only a certain ceiling a film can hit, and while PoTC2 may challenge it, its not going to break it. Notice that even massive films from the last few years have not managed to open more then $115 million. We've had three films with $100+ million weekends and they all fall fairly close together to each other. There is a reason, don't you think? Nope. Actually, when a number of blockbusters have similar numbers the record usually is about to be obliterated. In 1989 two films barely broke the opening weekend record with 29m-30m. So, was 30m as ceiling? Nope. Batman came out and broke the record by about 35%. A few years later you had quite a few films in the 40s. Batman Returns held the record, but a couple films were close to it (like now). Was there a reason? Nope again. JP 2 opened and beat the record by nearly 40%. In summer 2001 3 films all opened right near 68m, and just under the record of 72m. Certainly there must have been a ceiling with all these films opening just a slight amount below the record. Well, first Harry Potter came out and then Spider-Man. Within a year the record had increased by nearly 60%. 160m would be an increase of about 40% which is similar to what has been done a number of times before. Quote: All I'm saying is that while PoTC2 will be huge, it won't be $160 million huge. I"m thinking more in the range of $115 million opening weekend and $360 million overall.

Oh please. Like that is fair. I also predicted 88m (early) for X2 when almost everyone was much lower. I also was one of the few to predict early on that Reloaded would open huge, but have weak legs. I nailed its legs with about 98% accuracy. I had one of the highest predictions around for Meet the Fockers. Same goes for Bourne Supremacy. A few were over 50m on opening weekend for that one, many more were near 30m. I had 365m for Shrek 2, when almost everyone was under 300m. I nailed Sin City with the opening weekend , the multiplier, and the total. I predicted 2F2F would open with 50m+ when everyone was calling it a bomb. I was one of the few not to greatly overpredict The Last Samurai, Troy, and Ocean's 12. I called Alexander a bomb very early. I was one of 2 people to predict POTC would make 300m after seeing that second weekend number (I had 312m at the time, just about everyone else was at 250m or lower). I was the first to predict that MBFGW would reach 100m. Then I predicted over 200m when everyone was under 150m. People thought I was crazy with my rants on why it would easily pass 200m.
I've had my share of poor predictions, but please, it's rediculous to bring up one prediction that, I might add, I was hardly alone in. I often go out on a limb, and make bold predictions and the results are as you might expect. In any case, I don't see why POTC 2 can't break the opening weekend record by a large margin.

Just thought I'd note that a POTC got 8.4M viewers on a Thursday on ABC, which is pretty damn good for a film that sold over 15M DVDs and is on a night that ABC does horribly on. I'd say it shows just how big it is, and I'm becoming more and more convinced this'll easily pass $400M.

Not only was Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl the Week 1 record-breaker for combined DVD and VHS sales, topping 11 million units sold through to consumers and rental chains, but Disney's live-action swashbuckler earned $19.5 million during its first five days on rental shelves.
