While he is dead wrong on his prediction. It wouldn't be the end of theater as we know it. Maybe it would actually encourage theaters to make original quality and good films that are fun instead of the BS we have gotten this year.

Maybe my prediction is a tad low, but I have a feeling that those who are expecting a $100 million + opening will be sorely disappointed.

Guys, this will not make 50 mill opening day. ONE FILM......ONE FILM has managed that. Why would this accomplish the same feat?

Baumer they think there is some sort of Imaginary Hype out there for this film. I tend to believe these inflated predictions are held because of the lack of a true BB this year. It doesn't matter this film will not get over 110 in OW and its opening day will be under 40.

Pirates: 125m
The studio is so confident in this that I have no doubt it has high internal tracking numbers. They don't even bother to say the full name in the ads anymore, they just show shots from it and say "Pirates". It's like showing an ad for Superman and just saying "Supes".
Superman: 55% drop
They made it as a sequel to Superman 2 so it will behave somewhat as a sequel.
Prada: 35-40% drop
Basically the only real comedy out right now, not counting Breakup which most have seen who intended to. Plus it's good counter programming against Pirates. Meryl Streep has some snob appeal.

The reception of the original? The massive tracking?

Not enough. The tracking is just an idicator used on the net. 50 mill in one day is just not realistic. Spidey, ROTK, Spidey 2 and on couldnot do it. Neither will potc.

Tracking is an indicator that has been used by studios for decades. It wasn't until the general public went box office crazy that it went out to the net.
Granted it like everything else can be grossly wrong.

Hell, im sure WB ended up projecting 110m for SR in a week because of tracking, it holds alot of weight i'd say.

I got it at just over 50 as well, percentage points over Star Wars.

if tracking is at 118 milion how wrong can it really be if they tracked Superman almost dead on???
i see 100 million weekend very possibile and should get 106 million.
Why, because X-men 3 got 102 million from fanboys, comic books fans, action fans and some of the general public. With a hold on almost every demographic i think it can get higher.

Plus the ads have really started apearing in many places and for some reason i have noticed some big movies don't really advertise a lot up here in Canada. The mastercard comerical i have seen atleast 6 times, the Mcdonalds comerical will say 4 times and an actual ad about 4 times. So if you watch tv you will run into an ad.

Im not a fan of the POTC films and dont understand the allure. But this has such a big female appeal that its hard for us to track. So $110m is looking likely. I dont buy into all these $130m+ predictions though.

Remember Men In Black 2? People were expecting great things from that sequel for basically the same reasons, and...well...look what happened.
