True, but the amazing WOM among people who have actually seen it is certainly worth more than zilch. It's not like the only people who are praising the movie are 40-year-old basement-dwelling geeks like Harry Knowles and misanthropic, anti-depressant abusing critics.

The WOM seems to be just fine, don't know what you're talking about... (and from the looks of it you don't either)

No, you must be mistaken. Probably the entire audience broke into a spontaneous applause which came across as derisive laughter. In fact after the movie, as one Kong Fanatic on BOM suggested, the audience went door to door in the closest suburbs to spread the word on KK.

What went wrong??? Nothing.....
14.25mil Friday and a 30.3mil total so far. Great start for an average movie. But wait this isnt an 'average' movie now is it? PJ's Kong, I've been hearing it for months around here. Weekend takes from 70-100mil. 5 day totals between 90-130mil. I think now its time to come back to earth for a bit of reality. I said it in the summer that interest just wasnt has high as some had thought for this film. Didnt matter who directed. It was going to be another Godzilla.
You've got 30.3mil and a 5 day total of about 60-70mil. Godzilla pulled in about 60million in its first 5 days and about 80million adjusted. I'm telling you its going to finish between 175-225mil (Godzilla did 185.5mil adj.). Its not a free ride for the rest of the winter......
The movie is going to do fine. You factor in WW box-office takes and the future DVD sales and rentals and this movie will have made a boatload of money. Its just not as big as most had predicted....

I'll say it again, you do realize Godzilla had horrendous word-of-mouth almost on par with Batman & Robin, right? Why would Kong be that frontloaded, ESPECIALLY at this time of the year?

Again, speaking from the numbers thus far, irrelevant. If the film is so good, why isnt it making more money??? Dont tell me snow, school, Christmas, etc... People have to deal with life all year round, yet films make money or not enough of it. I've seen great, no spectacular films that should have made more money but they didnt. Its just the way it goes...

Batman Begins... Batman Begins... Batman Begins.
I'll say it again and again. WOM is not irrelevant, especially considering the opening.
People really overestimated the opening. I did too. But the movie is impressing those who have seen it. This is Batman Begins all over again.

Jon, hear me on this.... I'm not saying the movie sucks. I'm not saying the movie is going to do bad. I'm just being realistic about the numbers. This never was going to make 3 or 400 million. Its a 200mil + or - film at best. I'm not using the Godzilla thing as a comparison of film greatness. I'm just using the numbers. Godzilla will have had a better adjusted opening, thats a fact. Kong will probably have better numbers (drops) from week to week but thats from a lower starting point. In the end its going to do about the same gross, maybe even slightly better(adjusted)... Thats my guess....

Nothing has changed, PJ delivered another great movie and has once again proofed that he's one of the most gifted directors working today, putting to shame blokes like MISTER Lucas (yeah, i'm talking to you Mav). All that the box office of the first two days shows is that people weren't interested enough in a giant monkey movie to rush out and see it asap...
hahaha exactly....where were all these people in the Kong movie discussions all year in cinemania?? some people got a little too excited in their haste to get one over Peter Jackson

King Kong thread at Cinemania was god awful. If not for numerous plus some more different copy/pasted articles, then because of neverending bickering between BKB and Raziel.
One would be turned off from reading it, let alone participating.

Spin of the decade is on now;
8000 pound gorilla will save 2005 box office
With early gushing reviews, it is a masterpiece. Should break Titanic's record.
But for the running time would pass $1B WW.
Should get $110M and beat HP4.
Should match FOTR
Wednesday numbers come in.
And the reason for the apalling numbers; School is open. The weather is bad. There is way too much crime on the streets. The roads are full of potholes and people can't drive.
Friday number comes in.
Now the 8000 pound gorilla wants to be Batman Begins now that the dreams of upending ROTS and HP4 are crushed. Forget the fact that BB had 1/10th the hype of godzilla er. Hulk er. KK. I don't remember a Dateline show dedicated to selling Batman Begins as they did for KK.
All the spin in the world cannot mask the stench from one of the biggest underperforming tentpole movies of all-time.
Fortunately for KK, the lucartive holiday season will save this movie from a pathetic godzilla like performance.
