I don't know if this has already been posted elsewhere.. but the awards have already begun for Brokeback Mountain...
It was named best picture by the L.A. Critics Association on Saturday Night!
Ang Lee also won for best director.
http://movies.yahoo.com/mv/news/eo/2005 ... 34000.html
Furthermore, it has been nominated for 8 critics choice awards including best film, best director, and best actor for Heath Ledger....
http://movies.yahoo.com/mv/news/va/2005 ... 82300.html
I somehow think that this one is going to be one of the front runners at the Oscars this year, and therefore at the very least have a "the hours" type box office.
Can't wait for Tuesday!!

From BOM's article:
Quote: Next weekend, Focus rolls Brokeback Mountain out to around 60 theaters, including 20 new markets like Chicago, Detroit, Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, Miami, Seattle, Denver and Washington, D.C.
"Our biggest problem is going to be exhibition," Foley noted. "Brokeback Mountain's not ready [to expand widely]. I don't want to go up against King Kong any more than I am. We have to play to our strengths. Exhibitors are going to be in it for the quick money. We're in it for the long run. We have a film that needs very careful management."
According to Foley, the next wave of aggressive expansions will start on Jan. 6 with a plan to be at more than 300 theaters by Jan. 27, right before the Academy Award nominations are announced. Foley noted that the picture could go wider before then depending on how it is received in the meantime.

I just had to laugh at that quote. I mean that's what they are probably saying about every single of their movies. Let's face it...your strengths? There are none. Focus, you suck.
I mean what the...? It started off so well and they will wait OVER A MONTH until it lands in just over 300 theatres?!?! Till Jan 27th?! I'd say by that time it should be playing in at least 1,000.
Just lay back and see Focus screw it up much like P&P, Eternal Sunshine, Lost in Translation and all the rest.

Doesn´t mean anything, but still... is sweet.

all evening and late night shows sold out for BBM tonight at the Grove in LA. Haunting movie. Not sure if I can give it a grade just yet. I'm seeing it again on Friday and will process it then.

"The numbers are telling us that someone walking on the sidewalk in front of a theater playing 'Brokeback Mountain' is likely to be vacuumed inside," said James Schamus, co-president of the film's distributor, Focus Features. "'Brokeback Mountain' was a movie made so modestly that as of 3 p.m. yesterday afternoon, we were in profit."

Apoparently the movie is at 69 theaters this weekend (Can´t wait for the puns )
I´m thinking a $35,000 PTA for $2.4M. Yep, It´s a lot. But first weekend numbers were pretty incredible, too.

69 theatres...so what are you folks predicting?
I say $2.5 million for the weekend and the 8th spot at the box-office this weekend. The weekend after that they should expand it to around 200 theatres if they are smart.

I agree, they should expand it carefully, since they'll want to capatalize on the Golden Globe hype -- but not too much, since it could run the risk of peaking too early (which is what I'm fearing right now).
As for this weekend, I'm guessing around $2.5 million on the low end, and about $3 million on the high end. It should still (baring an upset) have the highest PTA in the Top 20.

Ya, why?
We could go see it on Sat too if you guys want... or we could go to the Grove and see it there... if that's what you guys want. I don't mind seeing it twice
