I really hope it grosses at least 305 million or so to cement its place ahead of Who Framed Roger Rabbit to be the second best attended summer winner in the last 26 years. Huh?

Re: Guardians of the Galaxy: Will it really be a big hit?
If early estimates hold for a 17-18 million weekend, GOTG will still be slightly ahead of Iron Man through the same point. Even though Iron Man had Memorial Day tomorrow, Guardians should pass it again next weekend. Even with only one more week of half summer weekdays, Guardians should get within 15 million at the least of Iron Man's gross at the end, which is insane.

Re: Guardians of the Galaxy: Will it really be a big hit?
Really strange that this will be the movie to hit $300m this year. I mean I knew Marvel was big but I thought nothing would top CA2 given that it has lesser competition and arguably better WOM.

Re: Guardians of the Galaxy: Will it really be a big hit?
WOM for Guardians is probably better than any other blockbuster this year (The Lego Movie is probably the only other choice). It's going to earn a multiplier of at least x3.2, and could even hit x3.3/3.4. A lot of people, especially casual or non-comic book fans, are really enjoying this film (its soundtrack has been #1 for 3 weeks now, too).
The only $90 million+ openers (excluding Wed/Thur releases) to have multipliers above 3 have been:
Shrek 2 (x4.08) Toy Story 3 (x3.76) Spider-Man (x3.52) Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (x3.52) The Dark Knight (x3.37) Iron Man (x3.23) Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (x3.12) The Avengers (x3.01)
And Guardians of the Galaxy is probably set to beat Iron Man's and maybe The Dark Knight's as well.

Domestically Guardians is the film of the year for audiences.
CA 2 and X-men are better films but they did not draw as wide an audience as that film domestically.

Considering how unknown of a property it is, we can pretty much label it an original film, and then it looks mighty impressive.

Its performance is even more impressive now that November is part of the overall down year for 2014. At the time it seemed like box office may be on an upward swing again for the rest of the year, but that has not been the case.

Mavel brand, spaceships, talking racoon, cgi characters, thin chris pratt, good first trailer, shitty summer 2014, NO animated films, better than average story and good wom?.
Its performance wasn't that surprising, and some saw it coming, though crossing 300m is the most remarkable fact

When you see disappointing performances for weeks in the busiest movie season of a year, you expect something to break out, some started to look at Guardians as the holy saver

I think the optimistic expectations were around $170-$200m so it did blow them out of the water. When we got to July though - it certainly looked like $250m+ was in play.

Even when it opened, no one really believed $300 million.

Re: Guardians of the Galaxy: Will it really be a big hit?
I think when it opened, $300m became likely due to the great WOM, reviews and lack of competition.

Honestly do not believe these numbers. The movie was just too god awful. I know it was a pure kids film, but still.

Re: Guardians of the Galaxy: Will it really be a big hit?
This took a lot longer than I expected, but I was curious to see the last film that was released in August that won a year box office wise.
I had trouble finding one, though some have finished in the top 3. I had to go back SEVENTY FOUR years to 1940 to find a film that opened in August and went on to win the year, 1940's Boom Town!
Here's a ranking of movies over the past 100 years (yes even silent films) that have made it to the final 3 for the year and opened in August:
The Sixth Sense #2 1999 The Fugitive #3 1993 Rocky Horror Picture Show 1977 #2 American Graffitti 1973 #3 Psycho 1960 #2 From Here To Eternity 1953 #2 The Snows of Kilimanjaro 1952 #3 Jolsen Sings Again #3 1949 Wilson 1944 #2 This Is The Army 1943 #2
Boom Town #1 1940!!!
Alexander’s Ragtime Band #1 1938 All Quiet On The Western Front #1 1930 Gold Diggers of Broadway #1 1929 The Singing Fool #1 1928 Wings #1 (#2 lifetime) 1927 Blood and Sand #3 1922 The Three Muskateers #3 1921 The Miracle Man #1 1919 Mickey #1 1918
Interestingly, the month of August had a 4 year streak from 1927-1930 for box office yearly wins. Guardians would be only the THIRD movie of the last 35 years to make it to the top 3 for the year. It would only be the FIFTH movie of the last 53 years to make it to the top 3 for the year. Just shows how underutilized August is, but also how completely unprecedented a yearly win would be.

Re: Guardians of the Galaxy: Will it really be a big hit?
How did you even find those??
Where did you?
Also, I'm hoping something else wins the year. Guardians doesn't deserve it.

I don't think anyone thought this would do over Winter Soldier, let alone be the #1 film of the year. Had someone said this in January they would've been ridiculed.
