That's what the long trailer is for.

 Re: Star Trek 2 predictions
Not to mention that 90% of the press about the movie has been centered on the villain already. I'm sure there are non-villain-related parts in the movie, and it's nice to see that there are (As awesome as Cumberbatch looks).

 Re: Star Trek 2 predictions
I haven't seen the trailer for this once in theaters. Strange. I'm not really feeling 100 opening at the moment. If I don't end up seeing a trailer in theaters before the movie comes out that'll be a welcoming change as I hardly remember the teasers.

 Re: Star Trek 2 predictions
Is it compulsory to see the predecessor before this new one?
I haven't seen any of the Star Trek TV episodes or movies apart from Insurrection in 1999.

At least watch Star Trek 09 to see if you like the characters. I've enjoyed almost all of the movies despite never being able to get into any of the tv shows.

It is opening big but it has to be really good to get those legs. Competition before and after will be huge.

 Re: Star Trek 2 predictions
2.7 multiplier isn't really that great. Around 3 is not unusual for a good sequel, so i think they already took into account competition. I'm sure it's gonna be good.

 Re: Star Trek 2 predictions
Hmm good point still 2.7 multiplier can also be high if the movie is not well received....with the previews thus far I am more than satisfied that it will get a better multiplier

The poster is shite. Looks like Olympus Has Fallen 2. Star Trek and guns just don't go well together.

 Re: Star Trek 2 predictions
It's 2nd week competition is ridiculous. I'd expect this to be huge if not for that.
OW 130 2nd 50 (65 4Day)
Final 340 Overseas 260
600 WW, though I'm hoping it can do 300+ overseas, thats the one area ST just can't seem to overcome.

I see that the marketing is a little aggressive this year and the last movie had good WOM still with almost doubling what the first makes doesn't guarantee $260m maybe with 3D it might get past $300m OS.

 Re: Star Trek 2 predictions
Star Trek has always been a niche geek item overseas, except for maybe a country or two. The brand name has been very well known, but for all the wrong reasons. I think the previous film did a tremendous job of convincing foreign audiences otherwise, but it took DVD, Blueray and TV to do it.
I fully expect this to do 300+ million overseas.

 Re: Star Trek 2 predictions
Given the new release date, it'll be interesting to see how much this parallels Episode 2's run. I thinking
OD: $30m (plus Wednesday IMAX previews) OW: $95m DOM: $305m OS: $350m

Rumors are that the tracking for this is.....not good. First choice in the single digits, which itself was a drop off from last week. Failure of marketing?

If that's the case, putting so much emphasis on the mystery of Cucumbersalad's character was indeed a big mistake. I mean, even if the tracking isn't that bad, I think it was still a mistake. Given the last film's reception, this should have been a $400+m contender even with all the competition this month. I also think Great Gatsby's great marketing has been detrimental to the potential for Star Trek to build up hype.

 Re: Star Trek 2 predictions
1) I am 110% sure that tracking is slightly off. First choice in the single digits? Yeah, no. That would point to a sub 75m opening weekend at this point.
2) I don't think the first one was QUITE enough of a modern classic type of deal to the point where a huge increase for the sequel was assured, ala IRON MAN 2. I think everybody has kind of overestimated the popularity of the first one as well as the popularity of the STAR TREK brand. The marketing decision to just plaster 'the symbol' everywhere was a huge mistake. Very few people know it (ala superman's S) and it isn't overly easy to decipher (i.e. the new batman symbol for batman begins).
3) Further, none of the films stars have done much of anything to improve their status or recognizability outside of it. Pine, Saldana, Quinto - excluding Avatar (which nobody even knew her in), none of them have had a large scale hit film since the first one.
4) 4 year wait. Some folks expected trek 2 in 2011, and 2012 at the latest. 2013 is 4 years after the original, and it isn't like it was a pirates of the Caribbean, transformers, or even Batman Begins in terms of word of mouth. It was more in vein of IRON MAN 1 where it is a solid, well liked hit, but it is by no means an instant classic. Waiting 4 years is just 1, if not, 2 years too long. The iron is no longer hot enough to really strike, if that makes sense. Could have done much better in 2011.
That said, this is still going to be a big, big hit. It just likely isn't going to be the behemoth everyone thought it might be after the first one opened.

 Re: Star Trek 2 predictions
Well the last tracking I saw had it at 95 million 3 day OW which would be great considering it is now opening on Thursday. I still see it making over 300 million. I also think it will be the best movie opening in May.

For me that's been a given for quite some time, When Gastby was pushed to May I seriously began to question the films quality, still gonna watch but I'm not expecting asscar bait.

Yeah I feel like if Gatsby was Oscar caliber, WB would have released it in the fall.
