It has everything going for it except for a few weekends to itself. You, my lady, are much worse at predicting box office than I could ever aspire to be! Besides, you know half the country can't even read, so there goes have of your 500m... You missed my point. I said if it had three weekends in a row with no other big releases it could have performed 500. Its going to go just north of 300 with all the competition. Sure half the country can't read, but its curiosity has been piqued, we had to put, like, 200 extra orders in for the book to add to the couple hundred we already had, there's about a 500 person reserve line, and every book club and its mother picked this book over the last few weeks. Look at its placement on the NYTimes best seller list. Quote: 3 THE DA VINCI CODE, by Dan Brown. (Doubleday, $24.95.) A murder at the Louvre leads to a trail of clues found in the work of Leonardo and to the discovery of a secret society. Its number three selling book last week, and its been on the list for 159 weeks! Numbers 1 and 2 have been on, respectively, 1 and two weeks. 159 weeks is insane. Harry Potter insane, plus the religious conspiracy and mounting debate around it. Lets not forget Hanks or Howard is attached to this. Lets put that three into perspective for you: Quote: Hardcover Fiction Published: April 23, 2006 This Week Last Week Weeks On List 1 TWO LITTLE GIRLS IN BLUE, by Mary Higgins Clark. (Simon & Schuster, $25.95.) A small girl communicates telepathically with her kidnapped twin. 1 2 GONE, by Jonathan Kellerman. (Ballantine, $26.95.) Two acting students stage their own disappearance  but then one of them is murdered. The psychologist-detective Alex Delaware investigates. 1 2 3 THE DA VINCI CODE, by Dan Brown. (Doubleday, $24.95.) A murder at the Louvre leads to a trail of clues found in the work of Leonardo and to the discovery of a secret society. 2 159 4 SHIVER, by Lisa Jackson. (Kensington, $19.95.) A New Orleans detective tracks a serial killer. 1 5 THE 5TH HORSEMAN, by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro. (Little, Brown, $27.95.) Detective Lindsay Boxer and the Women's Murder Club investigate unexplained deaths at a San Francisco hospital. 3 8 6 THE TEMPLAR LEGACY, by Steve Berry. (Ballantine, $24.95.) A former Justice Department operative becomes involved in a desperate search for the long-lost treasure and secrets of the medieval Knights Templar. 8 7 7 PRIOR BAD ACTS, by Tami Hoag. (Bantam, $26.) Two Minneapolis detectives search for a kidnapped judge who has been trying a murder case. 9 3 8 THE SECRET SUPPER, by Javier Sierra. (Atria, $25.95.) Clues in "The Last Supper" reveal Da Vinci's heretical beliefs. 6 3 9 THE TENTH CIRCLE, by Jodi Picoult. (Atria, $26.) When his teenage daughter is date-raped, a comicbook artist is overwhelmed by rage he thought he had buried with his past. 5 5 10 THE HOUSE, by Danielle Steel. (Delacorte, $27.) A workaholic lawyer's life changes when she buys a crumbling mansion. 4 6 11 A DIRTY JOB, by Christopher Moore. (Morrow, $24.95.) A San Francisco store owner becomes a Death Merchant, assigned to collect the souls of the recently dead to protect them from the dark forces. First Chapter 11 3 12 HEY, GOOD LOOKING, by Fern Michaels. (Pocket, $25.) Family feuds and forgiveness in Baton Rouge. 1 13 DIRTY BLONDE, by Lisa Scottoline. (HarperCollins, $25.95.) When the plaintiff murders the defendant in a case she has just tried, a judge's secret life becomes public. 10 4 14 *TOMB OF THE GOLDEN BIRD, by Elizabeth Peters. (Morrow, $25.95.) Intrigue and murder surround the discovery of the tomb of King Tutankhamen in 1922; an Amelia Peabody historical mystery. 7 2 15 THE LAST TEMPLAR, by Raymond Khoury. (Dutton, $24.95.) A coding device stolen from an exhibit of Vatican artifacts may hold clues to the medieval Knights Templar's long-lost treasure  and their secrets. 12 12 16 *WE ARE ALL WELCOME HERE, by Elizabeth Berg. (Random House, $22.95.) In Mississippi in 1964, a paralyzed woman struggles to raise her teenage daughter with the help of an African-American aide. 1 I would like everyone to note all the blue highlighted books. Those are all religion/symbolism/detective spin-offs. And are all on the top ten list because of the Da Vinci Code, which has stimulated an intense amount of reader consumption along these topics and style. And just for fun, here's the top selling paper backs. note Da Vinci Code is number 1. However, it was never originally released in paperback (only hardcover) which is why its only been there for two weeks. However, note the 133 weeks Angels and Demons, Dan Brown's other book has been on the paperback bestseller list. Also notice his Deception Point is up there for a month and a half already. Uh, three top selling books in this country out of the top ten? Quote: Paperback Fiction Published: April 23, 2006 This Week Weeks On List
1 THE DA VINCI CODE, by Dan Brown. (Anchor, $14.95 and $7.99; Broadway special illustrated edition, $22.95.) A murder at the Louvre leads to a trail of clues found in the work of Leonardo and to the discovery of a secret society. 2 2 NO PLACE LIKE HOME, by Mary Higgins Clark. (Pocket, $9.99.) A woman who is trying to conceal her past becomes the target of a killer. 3
3 FULL SCOOP, by Janet Evanovich and Charlotte Hughes. (St. Martin's, $7.99.) In this installment of the series set in Beaumont, S.C., a local pediatrician is stalked by an ex-boyfriend. 1
4 ANGELS & DEMONS, by Dan Brown. (Pocket Star, $7.99.) A Harvard scholar tries to save the Vatican from the machinations of an underground society. 133 5 COUNTDOWN, by Iris Johansen. (Bantam, $7.99.) A murderer stalks a young woman  the adopted daughter of the forensic sculptor Eve Duncan. 2
6 TIME AND AGAIN, by Nora Roberts. (Silhouette, $7.99.) Two previously published tales of a time traveler who falls in love. 2
7 THE MERMAID CHAIR, by Sue Monk Kidd. (Penguin, $14.) On Egret Island, off the coast of South Carolina, a married woman is strongly attracted to a monk. 5
8 DECEPTION POINT, by Dan Brown. (Pocket, $9.99 and $7.99.) An intelligence analyst is sent to the Arctic on a special assignment by the White House. 6
9 RAGE, by Jonathan Kellerman. (Ballantine, $7.99.) The psychologist-detective Alex Delaware tries to figure out who murdered a young man who had spent time behind bars for killing a child when he was a teenager. 6
10 DARK DEMON, by Christine Feehan. (Jove, $9.99.) A vampire slayer faces a mysterious woman whose talents rival his own. 2
Still think I'm that far off? I say 330-50 million right now, but this would have gone way higher had it not been for MI3 and X3 crowding it in.
100 Million opener if they're smart and push it into 4200 theatres and MI3 dissappoints and has piss-poor WoM.

I think DVC will do outstanding, but it won't do $100 m opening weekend. This is a film that will have legs, and a more subdued opening. People have the Victoria Day (Canada) and Memorial Day weekend's, and Da Vinci is a movie that I'd be more inclined to catch on a holiday break, compared to something like X3, which is worth seeing opening day/weekend...

No I have been saying it on this board for months, and am happy that others are noticing too!

The Davinci Code, the movie is unprecedented. Barring Harry Potter books, which are for the most part were written for children and teens, DVC is the 800 pound gorilla.
The DaVinci Code, the book is the BIGGEST selling novel (for adults) in history. At over 43 million hardcover copies sold and millions of paperback sales (released a couple of weeks ago), DVC is as big as they come. The fact that the Hardcover is at no. 3 after a frigging 159 weeks shows what a monster this is.
If the quality of the movie is decent or better, then watch out. This will be the biggest blockbuster of the year if it is good.

Every time DVC pops up, I always wonder how this would have done in December. If it could do $300 m coming out in busy May, how would it have done in mid December?
Dec has been very generous to Hanks:
12/18/98 You've Got Mail WB $115,821,495 Adjusted $162.8 m
12/10/99 The Green Mile WB $136,801,374 Adjusted $177.5 m
12/22/00 Cast Away Fox $233,632,142 Adjusted $285.7 m
12/25/02 Catch Me If You Can DW $164,615,351 Adjusted $186.8 m
Of his whopping 14 $100 m films, 4 have come from Dec, 3 from June, 4 from July, and 3 from Nov.
If Castaway could do $286 m adjusted for inflation in Dec, I think Da Vinci Code could have done huge #'s in Dec, which this year is pretty tame compared to last year...

If National Treasure can make 173 million, The Da Vinci Code can make just as much, but probably more.

Since this is trash, it will almost certainly be huge. There's no denying it. *Shrug*

The film subject itself is divisive, but you have to admit, the box office story behind this could be really intriguing.

Clearly you've not heard of Cast Away. And that didn't even have Tautou to serve as a counterpoint!

'Snakes' will be one of those few instances in box office history where a genuinly great film, nay, a masterpiece!, will also be an absolute smash.

Remember that time we totally won that bet on whether or not Narnia would make over 200 million?

And War of the Worlds not making 200? You have to admit, we were alot closer than the piss-poor b.o. predictor's on the rest of this site who were guessing it would make 300+ millions!
You gettin' that Da Vinci Code 300 Million+ vibe Squee? Are ya'?
