Re: Japan Box Office (2010); 9/4-5, Weekend Forecast
WARNER 1 N Resident Evil IV (Sony) 12 N BECK (Shochiku) 13 1 Flowering Dogwood (Toho) 3 4 2 The Borrower Arrietty (Toho) 8 5 N Mr. Children: Split the Difference Concert (Toho (Video Division)) 1Previews for Resident Evil IV were so strong it topped at Warner locations. It's definitely aiming for a huge opening when it opens next week with the 3D prices. With this weekend's previews, $10m Fri-Sun looks very likely imo. It's too bad the previews will probably be added to the three day next week though, I bet they were high enough for almost a Top 5 ranking this weekend. For a comparision, Inception's previews failed to ranking here. And TS3 might have actually lost several 3D screens to REIV already (it was No.3 at Warner last weekend). A shorter run is the price to pay when you only release your film on 3D screens to fully benefit from the higher tickets, though. BECK beating Flowering Dogwood here as well means it'll be No.1 this weekend since it'll be No.1 at Shikoku locations for sure.

SHIKOKU 1 N BECK (Shochiku) 12 1 Flowering Dogwood (Toho) 3 3 2 Police Dog Dream (Shochiku) 3 4 3 The Borrower Arrietty (Toho) 8 5 N Mr. Children: Split the Difference Concert (Toho (Video Division)) 16 5 The Karate Kid (Sony) 4 7 4 Toy Story 3 (Disney) 9 8 6 Metal Fight Beyblade VS Taiyō Shakunetsu no Shinryakusha (Toho) 3 9 8 Thriller Restaurant (Toei) 3 10 7 Pokemon 13 Diamond & Pearl Ruler of Illusions Zoroark (Toho) 9 BECK opening on top at all three major chains is such a much needed victory for Shochiku. They've been struggling all year, as have every other non-Toho local distributor, so BECK is a much needed hit for them. I'm curious if the strong showings for the Mr. Children concert at Warner and Shikoku is enough to give it a National Top 10 Ranking. Something definitely hit TS3 this weekend, most likely screen loss. Falling out of the Top 5 at Warner, and dropping three positions at Shikoku.

Resident Evil (2002) - $17,477,878 (O/W = $1,582,914 from 285 and increased in 2nd weekend) Apocalypse (2004) - $23,642,659 (O/W = $5,879,255 against The Village $3m) Extinction (2007) - $24,648,673 (O/W = $5,208,839 against 2 other local openings above $4m) --- So yeah, surprising yet not too surprising. The past two flicks have opened to big numbers....coupled with 3D and sub standard grosses from foreign releases since Inception...probably contributed to this. It's clear that locals love the franchise. With a $10m opening, this one is headed for a total close to $40m then....may even beat Inception.

This means TS3 added around $5 million since its last weekend. Looks like $130 million is a lock.
Could it still top Alice?

Awesome for Beck. How does its chances of 20m look now? Also, does live action adaptations suffer heavy 2nd weekend drops because of frontloading?

Could it still top Alice? TS3 still needs to gross over Y1 billion to beat Alice in Wonderland. If it fell over 40% this weekend with no 3D openers, just limited screenings for Resident Evil IV, it's probably going to see a hefty drop this coming weekend and definitely the following weekend. We're talking about $10m+ back to back openers (previews included for REIV), both in 3D, the next two weeks. TS3 has no 2D screens to support it. And it looks like TS3 grossed about Y150-Y170m this past weekend, so Y1 billion isn't going to come easy, in fact, I'd say it's almost impossible. Bluebomb wrote: Awesome for Beck. How does its chances of 20m look now? Also, does live action adaptations suffer heavy 2nd weekend drops because of frontloading? $20m is locked. Y2.5 billion (high 20's, maybe 30m) should roughly be where BECK ends up. Nah, the drop next weekend will be just fine. Almost no local films ever see a second weekend drop of near or over 50%. Only the pure fanbase driven films come near the 50% second weekend drop mark, and even then, most fail to drop 50%. It's nice to see two post-summer hits, BECK (aiming for $30m) and Flowering Dogwood (targeting $35m), following July's Big 3. And mid/late September definitely has it's share of big hit films it's about to contribute: REIV will do over $30m, maybe has a chance at $40m just due to 3D if it's not too frontloaded. REII grossed Y2.7b ($32m today), and REIII grossed Y2.85b ($34m today). Kimi ni Todoke should be a $20/$25m grosser I think. Each of the currently 12 volumes has sold over 1m copies. Gundam Trailblazer has a big fanbase ready to come out, and should be a smaller scale version of Evangelion 2.0 and One Piece Film Strong World. Umizaru 3 has some big unknown potential breaking the local screen count and being the first major local 3D release. It'll be released on a minimum of 50% more screens than Umizaru 2. It's predecessor grossed Y7.1b, or $83m today, and was the second biggest local film of 2006 just behind Tales From Earthsea (Y7.65b). I'm not sure on Thirteen Assassins, but it's been charting well on every list I've seen, so it should be a solid hit, too.

New Entries - Flowering Dogwood debuts on the Gross and Admissions charts after 16 days. i - still playing
BECK might make the Top 20 Opening Weekend Chart at No.20 edging out Oceans, but right now it's about $30,000 short with estimates. The charts will be updated with actuals late Tuesday or on Wednesday.
Also, Confessions is still listed at a few theaters, but no updates have been available for two weeks. It's pretty much done, so I'm removing it from the still playing for now.

Re: Japan Box Office (2010); Weekend Rankings
Some weekend actuals (totals anyway), Here Comes The Bride, My Mom! - Y38,657,199 ($456,021), 32,575 admissions on 89 screens. Flowering Dogwood - Y1,880,060,921 ($22.2m) after 16 days. The Borrower Arrietty - Y8,431,772,774 ($100.3m), 7,086,428 admissions, after 51 days. Bayside Shakedown 3 - Y7,014,378,500 ($83.4m), 5,471,451 admissions, after 65 days. The Resident Evil IV previews totaled Y418,426,140 ($4.9m). Wow. That'd have easily won the weekend, and all of that is going to be included into REIV's opening 3day total this weekend. The 3day, plus the previews, will probably be close to $15m. The opening weekend will be Sat. and Sun. as usual, so the $4.9m from previews will be added to the total of those two days for the official opening weekend itself. By comparision, Resident Evil III's opening weekend was Y598m ($5.2m back in 2007). So Resident Evil IV's limited previews alone almost matched that in USD. It'll have to be very, very frontloaded to not gross $40m, imo. 3D (for films people want to see) is magical in Japan.

Re: Japan Box Office (2010); Resident Evil IV Previews (huge)
@ RE4!! Wow. In previews alone. I'm very happy for it, that is going to translate into a colossal OW and a massive total for this type of movie. Its Japanese gross may end up being more than half of its American gross!

Kamen Rider The Movie W/Goseiger TOEI $484,415 5 349 $1,388 -52 $16,742,972 10. Inception Warner Bros. Int'l $468,382 7 282 $1,661 -52 $39,739,479 Strong opening for BECK. A much needed success for distributor Shochiku. Flowering Dogwood continues doing well and is aiming for a total in the mid 30's. The Borrower Arrietty crosses $100m after 8 weeks. A total of about $115m is looking likely. Toy Story 3 sees a somewhat big drop, but still a solid week and hold. Two big 3D releases are coming up this weekend and the next, so it's hard to tell if it'll get completely slaughtered or not. If it's hit hard, a total in the high 120's will be it's stopping point. If it survives somehow, then it should crawl pass $130m. Bayside Shakedown 3 is still holding in there after 10 weeks now, and a total in the high 80's looks to be as far as it'll go, however. Inception just never caught on really. A final total of probably $41m is certainly great, but there was some lost potential here as it finishes as the 6th biggest film of the Summer.

Yep$15m was about what I expected with the $4.9m previews.
About $10m Fri-Sat ($7mish for Sat and Sun).
I'm away until tomorrow, I'll update everything then sometime.

Is $45+ million possible for it?

I doubt it. I mean, it's possible, but with the big previews it should be a bit frontloaded.
I see high 30's/low 40's right now.

Weekend Rankings September 11-12, 2010 1 N Resident Evil IV (Sony) 1 2 N Villain (Toho) 13 1 BECK (Shochiku) 2 4 2 Flowering Dogwood (Toho) 4 5 3 The Borrower Arrietty (Toho) 9 6 4 Toy Story 3 (Disney) 10 7 5 The Karate Kid (Sony) 5 8 N You Dance With The Summer (Toei) 19 6 Metal Fight Beyblade the movie/Duel Masters the Movie 2010 (Toho) 4 10 8 Bayside Shakedown 3 Set The Guys Loose! (Toho) 11 Resident Evil IV has grossed Y1.3b (including previews and Friday), for a total of about $15.5m on 688,301 total admissions. By comparison, Inception grossed $8.9m with previews and Friday added it's opening weekend on barely 600,000 total admissions. So you can see how much 3D helped Resident Evil IV. Y1.3b is nearly 50% of the total gross of the previous two installments. No numbers, just demo breakdown, for Villain yet. You dance With The Summer - 32,142 admissions on 201 screens. SD has TS3 at Y10.5b or $125m after 10 weeks. If true, $130m probably won't happen with a bigger 3D release coming out this weekend. Regardless, still a monster smash hit.
