 Re: The Great Gatsby Predictions
I think the hype is a bit overblown and many fans of the book are turned off by the moulin rouge look.
however by going for that look they may get a new crowd.
It will all depend really, it could overwhelmed a bit if it faces against a large 2nd weekend around 65-75 million.

The book is only the most popular (based on sales) because it's been around for ages and because it was bought by schools in their hundreds. Not because it was "loved". 4. It's a period-looking borefest opening in May = huge 2nd weekend drop. 5. It has 3D...which is as much of a detraction as an attraction nowadays in the US. 1. Leo's huge. 2. The book is super boring - - one of my least favorite of the adolescent "classics". 3. It is a very odd time of year to release it - - though Moulin Rouge! was released on June 1st, 2001 in the US - - it had originally been scheduled for a Xmas 2000 release, but Baz needed more time to finish editing it. 4. Moulin Rouge! was also a period-looking borefest, until viewers realized it was fully Luhrmannized. I hope to gawd Baz's gotten back to his old form after his Australia misfire. 5. 3D sucks.

 Re: The Great Gatsby Predictions
People love the book and super excited from this. I'd be surprised if this opened under 30 million now. 34-38 looks good.

Thegun wrote: People love the book... Really? I'm sure there is a core audience of American Lit fans, but amongst the general population? Not. (Though the hot trend these days is constantly having a copy of the novel in your back pocket and having wild movie watching parties featuring the 1974 Robert Redford version of The Great Gatsby, so I could be wrong...)I am the biggest Baz Luhrmann fan going - - but this overhyping of that dull novel is getting out of hand. Unless Baz totally blows the doors off with his trademark style, this new version of The Great Gatsby is going to be a big, big BO disappointment.

 Re: The Great Gatsby Predictions
It's not about people loving the book, it's about the book being very well known.

 Re: The Great Gatsby Predictions
Actually, the book tends to be among the most loved/least hated of the "great American novels" that people are forced to read in school. It's not at the To Kill a Mockingbird level where even people who claim to hate reading seem to enjoy it for whatever reason, but it plays well for required reading.

 Re: The Great Gatsby Predictions
Poor Algren His lack of knowledge of Leo's starpower really shines in this thread.

My "lack of knowledge" (odd way to phrase it) of Leonardo DiCaprio's starpower is definitely a hindrance on my resume. Some mornings, I just can't pull myself out of bed because I know that somewhere on the planet, there's a WOKJ user that knows one piece of insignificant information that I don't care enough to know. It's breaking me.
