I understand that, but this isn't Super 8 ? This is a big budget superhero flick with a built in fanbase and really agressive marketing. By those standards alone I would expect better online ticket sales. Also aren't these type of movies suppose have more of a rush factor anyways ?

The point is, all we heard last week at this time was how "awful" and "slow" Super 8's advance sales were and how the movie was totally doomed, and then it opened to $35M.

Boxoffice.com is going with $13.5m for Penguins. Ouch.

 Re: June 17-19 Predictions
Super 8 had the same percentage of ticket sales last week and still opened to $35m. And I'm not sure when Potter tickets went on sale exactly but clearly it's dominating right now. But still, 8% for this isn't really pointing to $50m+. In fact, nothing really is except tracking itself. The extremely poor reviews might affect it some. It's tough to say where this will go.

 Re: June 17-19 Predictions
^ Exactly ! and comparing it to Super 8 only makes it look worse. I mean I'm not trying to spell doom on anything, but this is probably one of the hardest blockbusters in a while to actually get a good read on. On one hand the reviews are terrible and there isn't any real positive advance buzz. On the other hand the last minute rush and walk up business from families and general moviegoers alike could help it alot.

 Re: June 17-19 Predictions
The Fantastic Four comparisons dont hold up because FF4 though wasnt a great film - looked appealing in the trailers. This does not.
Still the fans will get this to a respectable OW in the 30s but it wont make $100m.

 Re: June 17-19 Predictions
I liked Fantastic Four.
I hope I like this, seeing it today, so far 5-1 with summer blockbusters.

Doesn't the age demographic for Super 8 show that there actually would be very little father/son going out to see it? Seems like the main demo for the film are older males with no families or at least older males who are not bringing their families. If they were bringing their families, it would have balanced out the age difference. It should see a boost, but I think a film like Green Lantern and Mr. Popper Penguins will benefit more from Father's Day than Super 8. Not sure about that. Families will be much more accommodating to dads this weekend, so the fact that Super 8 didn't bring out all the families and just had many males watching alone or with male friends boosts the potential this frame. Or families could be waiting for this weekend to see the film with dads and as a result created the big imbalance last week. Agree - dads in general aren't the audience that rushes out on opening weekend. Father's Day 2009 enlightens - where the best wide holds were Star Trek +14.8% Terminator Salvation +.8% Up -4.9% Wolverine -7% Land of the Lost -9% Pelham 123 -9.8% Star Trek and Terminator may be anomalies but they imply that Father's Day favors Sci Fi with a long history, right up Super 8's ally. Even if it doesn't increase I bet it has the best hold of the day.

 Re: June 17-19 Predictions
Would be cool if The Art of Getting By could at least take in 1.5 Million. I just saw a TV spot on ABC Family for it . That's the only network besides MTV where I've seen one. Hopefully the constant advertising on MTV will be enough for it.
