($4.59) 1998 $587.3 m 1999 $542.2 m 2000 $511.0 m 2001 $486.7 m 2002 $474.1 m 2003 $456.8 m 2004 $443.6 m 2005 $430.4 m 2006 $417.85 m ($6.592 est) 2007 $405.7 m ($6.79 est) 2008 $394.1 m ($6.99 est) So we're coming to a point, where in the next two years, the film that could top Titanic, might not even have been able to top $400 m in Titanic's year. Oh, that inflation!
I'd prefer to deal with estimated tickets sold, it sort of puts everything on a level playing field instead of making a big leap forward or backwards.

We always get estimated tickets sold, so I wanted something fun.

The original poster? Oh yes, me. I said Sith never had a chance to beat Titanic because of those factors. It:
1. Had much narrower demographics than Titanic
2. Is dorkier
3. Had far less rewatchability among regular audiences (if you contest that, re-read #2 to remind yourself)
I should have phrased it as: "no rewatchability aside from dorks like you and I."
Pirates, on the other hand, meets those criteria. Whether it beats Titanic is unimportant to that point, but DMC sure has a better shot because of that.

Absolutely not. It will not beat Shrek 2 let alone Titanic.

Re: Can POTC 2 beat Titanic?
DP07 wrote: Oh, I wanted to create this for so long, but never wanted to take the beating I would get. heh 2 years ago when I started predicting over 400m I thought it had a 1% chance. Earlier this year at 515m I gave it 20%. This week 30%. Now with the way it's selling I think it's more likely then not. Yes, I said it, I think this will probably beat Titanic. Yeah, you might attribute this to my getting carried away with the hype and sellouts, but seriously it might beat Sith midnight and is having the best ever online ticket sales. And it's not a fanboy film, which puts it so far ahead of everything I can't even fathom it. If it gets over 65m Friday you all need to start considering it.
Considering this movie will probably have a 140 Million in 3 days which is staggering to say the least, it will have to continue to rank in high every day and OWN several weekends to itself at #1 for it to even beat TITANIC.. I'd love for this movie to do it, if for anything to knock TITANIC down a notch.. I'm still blown away to this day how that movie managed to get 600 Million domestically cause after watching it the other day, I thought it was good, but come on.. 600 Million good??? Something was in the air at the time this movie came out that forced it to gross what it did..
