No, but that's because it was a review for the PotC3 script, not the PotC2 script. And I thought that review was great, in terms of giving some wonderful information about the storyline. I've been keeping up on all the spoilers and have some very great inside connections on PotC, and I can assure you--Pirates is gonna blow everyone away. Not only is it going to dominate SR in the US, it'll dominate it internationally as well.

I think the cliffhanger for PotC2 is BRILLIANT, and it is NOT going to affect it's repeated viewings. In fact, it'll probably increase the repeated viewings amongst the fandom. I know that so far, the fandom is quite abuzz about the spoilers and everyone's planning on trying to BEAT their viewing records of the first film! And then there's the additional people who didn't get to see the first film in the theater who are also pledging to see the sequel multiple times... So there will actually be more people doing repeated viewings of this film than there were for the first film....... So, that right there tells you about the sequel's legs (aka HUGE).
And opening weekend? Well, I've got fellow Depp fans who are planning on seeing every opening day showing of The Libertine next week.... Multiply that by thousands of Depp, Bloom, Knightley, PotC, etc. fans who plan on seeing the movie multiple times opening weekend, and there's your answer:
PotC2 is going to BLOW away the "competition" (there really isn't any) on opening weekend and in subsequent weeks thereafter.

The cliffhanger in The Matrix 2 isn't what hurt the film so badly, it was all of the stuff BEFORE the cliffhanger (ie the film itself), which was unappealing to me, as well as clearly the main moviegoing audience. The ending isn't what caused The Matrix 3 to drop 50% from The Matrix 2.

Actually yeah I kind've like that ending.
Only problem for me is that...
[spoil]Davey Jones will be the bad guy in part 3 as well. I would've liked someone new, to give each edition some better identity.[/spoil]

Indeed, perhaps they will be able to make him interesting again in Pirates 3

I don't think the cliffhanger is going to really affect PotC2 at all. This franchise is really, really starting to mirror Back to the Future for me. You've got the fun first film and now the sequel that tries to imitate what the first flick did while bringing a darker tone to the proceedings. Considering POTC2/BTTF2 have the exact same cliffhanger, I think they're pretty comparable in terms of performance.
In that sense, I think Dead Man's Chest is going to follow BTTF2's box office pattern as well. Bigger opening, less total gross.
108/290
And Tina, I don't think your POTC fandom cult is quite as large as you think it is. Don't let yourself get Serenity'd.

Movies don't do well peddling to fanbases, they do well by being able to appease the fans and bring in the general audience, but the power is the general audience's.
That's what Star Wars, Rings, Potter, etc. do/did well. Reloaded brought all those people who got to see The Matrix in the door, but in the end was either too challenging (or too convoluted and moronic, depending on how you want to look at it) to keep people interested.
Pirates has a very winning formula, and the fact that the first movie was pretty well liked, but far from perfect actually helps it. It's not going to be hard for Bloom and Knightly to live up to his wooden performance in the first movie, and Depp rarely disappoints.

BJ, I love your optimism (especially when it comes to films I'm cheering for), but you do have a tendency to overpredict a tad Though if you're right here, I swear I'll bow to you and declare you superior.

I just thought I'd mention that POTC had among the best legs EVER for a film opening over $40 m.
1 The Lion King 7.651488863
2 Jurassic Park 7.592856295
3 Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace 6.65044508
4 The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring 6.637454442
5 Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl 6.549633257
The Lion King had huge young audiences (adding to legs), SW Ep. I was the most anticipated film ever, and LOTR 1 was greatly helped by the holiday season. For POTC to open smack in July, the weekend AFTER Independence Day (which generally is a huge box office weekend), and rank in the top 5 best legs ever for $40 m + openers is a testament to just how big its sequel could be. POTC had BETTER legs smack in July, then Shrek 1 had, with the 2nd weekend bump of Memorial Weekend.
If the "Shrek 2" effect comes back soon, POTC 2 is the film we'll see it with next.
It also had the 6th best legs ever for a film opening with over $30 m (Saving Private Ryan had slightly better legs).

It's legs were great because not that many people saw it opening weekend. If it opened to 70 mil 3-day, the total wouldn't have been much different.
