Then again, Traumschiff declined from Manitu, so I expect the same here. A bigger opening, a smaller total. This year hasn't been big for local films, only one crossed 2 million admissions (Der Weiße Massai). I don't see any movie in near future doing so. Inflation is not a helping hand here, since we are talking admissions and not money. Titanic won't ever be dethroned. Around 18 million admissions...insane.
Is a sequel to 7 Zwerge in the works?
You're right, this year has been very ordinary for local pics......Raumshiff, 7 Werge and Der Untergang were lethal last year.

Yep, it is in works: 7 Zwerge: Der Wald ist nicht genug (The Forest is not Enough).
Coming out next Ocotber.
This year has been just as miserable for the film industry in Germany as it was in the USA. The admissions declined quite a bit. It's up to Potter, Narnia and Kong to save the day.

Harry's setting the world on fire once again as "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" dominated foreign box office with $95.4 million from more than 9,400 prints in 42 markets in its second weekend.
Thanks to impressive launches in Japan, Spain and Italy and solid holdover perfs, "Goblet" has now hit $207 million offshore -- $2 million ahead of the foreign cume for "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" at the same point of its run in June 2004 on its way to a final international gross of $543 million.
Warner has now racked up more than $2 billion overseas from its quartet of "Potter" pics in addition to topping $1 billion on the domestic side. "Goblet" still has plenty of gas in the tank with openings next weekend in Australia, France and South Korea.
The stellar start for "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" provides some badly needed holiday season cheer for the industry, which has seen grosses lag this year in many key foreign markets. Rival distribs are optimistic that moviegoers' support for "Goblet," which has given extensive exposure to trailers for BVI's "The Chronicles of Narnia" and UIP's "King Kong," can maintain current momentum for the rest of 2005.
"Goblet of Fire" obliterated comparative results from the same frame of 2004, when "The Incredibles" led with a still-sizeable $44.3 million. Should final weekend numbers for "Goblet" top $100 million, it would mark the first frame with a pic hitting nine figures since "War of the Worlds" launched with $102 million in July.
"Goblet" posted its top opening in Japan with $14.3 million at 851 playdates including sneak previews, representing the fifth-highest launch in that market. PerfPerf wasn't a major surprise as "Azkaban" conjured up $121 million in Japan for its best foreign total.
"Goblet" also set all-time records for debut weekends in two markets -- Italy with $9.4 million at 855, topping the mark set by local hit "Pinocchio," and Belgium with $2.4 million at 177 amid snowstorms, 16% ahead of the previous record set by "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets."
The fourth "Potter" pic also launched large with a trio of markets recording their second-biggest openings ever -- in Spain with $8 million from 527 prints, behind Spanish blockbuster "Torrente 3"; in Brazil with $4.1 million at 550; and in Greece with $1.3 million at 84, trailing only "Troy."
Holland auds fended off snowstorms for a "Goblet" debut of $2.5 million at 251 for that market's third-biggest opening including previews. Argentina's debut hit $1.07 million at 156 for the best launch among the "Potter" films.
The U.K. led among holdover markets with $15.9 million at 536 playdates, representing a respectable 38% decline to lift the BlightyBlighty cume to $51.3 million. Snowstorms and outages hampered German bizbiz, which fell 54% to $10 million at 1,248 but still pushed the Teutonic total to $35.5 million.
The Mexican soph seshsesh for "Goblet" slid 48% to $3.7 million at 654 engagements. Despite the decline, the frame still represented the largest second weekend for a Warner film and lifted cume to $13.6 million.
Competitors were mostly content to again ride the "Potter" coattails, opting for a few targeted counterprogrammed openings plus holdovers -- tactics employed by BVI for "Flightplan" with $9.6 million at 3,662 playdates in 42 markets. The Jodie FosterJodie Foster thriller has grossed $86.4 million overseas to nearly match its Stateside cume.
Sony scared up respectable grosses for "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" with $7.8 million at 2,340 sites in 41 markets, lifting foreign cume to nearly $32 million and the worldwide total to $107 million. BVI's "Chicken Little," also on a gradual release pattern, continued to feather its nest with $5.7 million, lifting foreign cume to $32 million, with Mexico the top contributor at $10 million.
UIP launched "Just Like Heaven" in half a dozen markets with $2.8 million, mostly from France with a decent $1.8 million at 443 playdates. The romantic comedy, starring Reese WitherspoonReese Witherspoon, is based on a French book.
UIP, prepping for its worldwide Dec. 14 launch of "King Kong," stuck mostly with holdovers such as "The Constant Gardner" with $2 million at 631 engagements in six markets, "Elizabethtown" with $1.7 million in 1,905, "Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit" with $1.5 at 2,506 and "Doom" with $1 million at 770. "Wallace & Gromit" has cumed $122 million internationally and $177 million worldwide.
Sony saw continued solid returns from "Melissa P," its first Italian local production, with $1.68 million at 318 playdates, down 31% for a $4.75 million cume.

The worldwide total stands at $408 million for Potter now.
The opening in Japan is disappointing, I'd say, the past two Potter flicks opened bigger. Here is hoping for a good multiplier, but in any case it is a lock to pass $100 million total there.
Next weekend its biggest opening markets are France and Australia. I am sensing another $70+ million international weekend. The hold in Germany should be good. This weekend was GREATLY affected by the snowstorms in my state. Some regions don't have electricity for three days already. Should drop no more than 30% in Germany next weekend, especially as nothing big opens.
$900 million worldwide is looking better with each day.

UPDATE FROM GERMANY:
Huge snowstorms in my state (North Rhine Westfalia) affected the movies immensly, since my state if the most populated in the country. The estimated admissions number for the weekend is 1,275,000 admissions for a total of 4,525,000 admissions. This is the 9th biggest 2nd weekend of all time. Not as good as the distributors hoped for, but the mild drop next weekend should make up for that somewhat. I expect around 900,000 admissions next weekend.

Japan is a huge dissapointment, $14.5m is the 2nd lowest for the franchise....below POA and COS. Very surprising, i was expecting a new weekend record around $20m.
While i don't think this will stop it from hitting $120m.....i might not go any higher with Mr & Mrs Smith, Memoirs of a Geisha, King Kong and Chicken Little coming in the next 4 weeks before New Years.

FINLAND - Week 1
GOF gained only $0.4m since the record 3-Day ($1.1m) opening....it's now trailing HP3.
Lord Of The Rings: ROTK - $2,046,630 ($1,451,281 + $595,349 2-Days - 68) The Matrix: Reloaded - $1,545,830 ($1,247,304 + $298,526 2-Days - 55) Lord Of The Rings: TTT - $1,515,899 ($1,154,787 + $361,112 2-Days - 58) Harry Potter 3: POA - $1,511,385 ($1,057,139 + $454,246 2-Days - 70) Harry Potter 4: GOF - $1,498,687 (or $1,390,208 without p/v - 70) Vares - $1,235,474 (or $430,603 without p/v - 40) Star Wars 3: ROTS - $1,160,541 (8-Day or $1,160,541 7-Day - 66) Harry Potter 2: COS - $1,144,216 (69) Lord Of The Rings: FOTR - $1m+ Harry Potter 1: PS - $1m+ Bad Boys: A True Story - $998,216 (or $982,805 without p/v - 52)
GERMANY - Opening Weekend
In terms of US$ and Euros, GOF's 4-Day (really 5-Day) trails ROTK....understandbly, since ROTKs gross is made up of more full-priced adult tickets.

~~~Archangel~~~ wrote: Japan is a huge dissapointment, $14.5m is the 2nd lowest for the franchise....below POA and COS. Very surprising, i was expecting a new weekend record around $20m.
While i don't think this will stop it from hitting $120m.....i might not go any higher with Mr & Mrs Smith, Memoirs of a Geisha, King Kong and Chicken Little coming in the next 4 weeks before New Years.
I am sure it will hit $120 million.
Uhhh...I just read an international weekend report in German and it said that the Japanese opening of HP4 was the franchise-best. Anything we should know about?
I think I read it only had two days in Japan and no previews. So 14.5 million in two days is huge.
UPDATE FROM GERMANY:
Over the weekend - 1,263,778 admissions . That's around 47.5% down from the opening 4-day weekend. Total admissions number - 4,526,532. It was the 9th biggest 2nd weekend ever.
Harry Potter's opening week was 2,977,754 admissions. Not very strong weekdays.
Harry Potter admissions after 11 days in Germany:
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone - 5,119,871
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets - 4,969,745
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - 4,526,532 (however, it had one extra day, Wednesday, on which it had around 285,000 admissions)
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - 3,821,060
Next weekend should give it a better hold since this one was hurt by the snowstorms. I see a total of around 8 million as still possible.
Didn't Chamber barely made 8 million? How many admissions had Azkaban?
UPDATE FROM GERMANY:
Over the weekend, Harry Potter had a nice drop of 35% to 820,000 admissions and a total of 5,650,000 admissions after the 3rd weekend. It barely edged out ROTS already for the 2nd biggest movie of the year here (behind Madagascar).
Ohter Harry Potter flicks after the same time frame:
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone - 7,028,406 admissions
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets - 6,331,487 admissions
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - 4,718,009
GoF is tracking well ahead of the third movie, but also way behind the first two. I see it ending with around 8,500,000 admissions.
It will easily be #1 worldwide and #1 overseas for the year. As of now, I see around $900 million worldwide.
"In a stunning third weekend display that underlines the might of the international arena, Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire added an estimated $92.6m from more than 11,600 prints in 57 markets for a $330.6m running total.
Combined with the estimated $229m domestic tally the family picture's worldwide gross now stands at more than $560m.
Goblet Of Fire's weekend performance was powered by 15 openings led by a mighty French launch that produced $19.7m from 950 prints and 2.8million admissions nationwide. This was the biggest ever opening for a Warner Bros title, the biggest Harry Potter release ever and the second biggest industry opening weekend of all time behind Star Wars Episode III.
Australia generated $9.2m from 553 prints for the second biggest Warner Bros release behind The Matrix Reloaded and the fifth biggest industry opening weekend ever.
South Korea produced $6.2m including previews from 331 prints for the fourth biggest industry opening weekend and the biggest in the Harry Potter franchise.
South Africa produced $790,000 including previews from 85 for the biggest launch in the franchise, while Venezuela deserves mention for a sensational $558,000 launch on 85 prints including previews that resulted in the biggest industry opening weekend of all time.
The UK led the holdovers with a third weekend $8.7m weekend haul from 1,300 prints that raised the running total to a magnificent $64.3m. In other third weekend holds, Germany added $6.2m from 1,256 for $4.1m, and Mexico grossed $1.8m from 654 to stay top on $16.8m.
Japan led the second weekend holds, beating a strong opening by Mr And Mrs Smith to hold on to first place with $8.6m from 858 for a $29.9m running total.
Italy added $5.2m from 880 for $18m after two, Spain added $4.1m from 531 for $13.1m, and Brazil grossed $2.3m from 550 for $7.9m, a strong result that ranks as Warner Bros' biggest ever second weekend."
