Not necessarily, I don't really join *clubs*, but on paper Walk the Line has the potential.

A lot can happen too. Maybe Potter squeezes the life out of every film that weekend? Maybe Walk the Line isn't as liked as expected? Maybe it is crushed by other smaller adult-targeted films in the following weeks? Maybe there is another hurricane and people stop going to the movies because their power bill is 100% more than last year...

etc. etc. etc.

Don't feel bad about seeing the light. You're just a little quicker to see it than others, and that's nothing to be embarrassed about. I'll gladly put you in the club and take you out of the other.

I'll join! I think if its opening is near the twenties or higher, with the help of the holidays, Oscar buzz and awards nominations, it should pass 100 million. ;)

Interesting to see all of the friends and fans Johnny Cash had, as you can see at the following site. Paul McCartney, Kieth Richards, Bono from US, Tom Petty, and Kirk Hammett, the frickin' lead guitarist from Metallica. Just check out the messages link to see all of the people who loved him. He had a wide reach.

This site also has music clips that play as soon as you go to the site, and you'll hear him singing "Ring of Fire" among others.

Compare Joaquin Phoenix singing "Ring of Fire" in the trailer, and I think you'll see why he's a lock for Best Actor.

That's what you said with Sith when you were telling everybody that you "came back down to reality". Remember how hard I tried to get you to to see how wrong you were? You wouldn't listen to me then, and look at how that ended it. This time, you are the only one that I'm not going to try to convince, but you can feel free to present some kind of case to support your claims, but like the rest of the non believers, you probably won't be able to. Good luck!

I'm still waiting on of of you guys to prove to me that Ray Charles is more popular in the states than Johnny Cash. You certainly were hopping that bandwagon all because of a recent movie that somehow made you believe that, but I think I proved that not to be the case on page 4. I think that if you could have proven otherwise, you would have.

Factor in the Oscar push (far bigger than what Ray had), the female demographic (that I seem to be the only man here who doesn't dismiss just because I don't belong to that group) who will be there for Reese (a box office draw that is big with females) and the love story (something Ray didn't have), and factor in that this is a film about a white celebrity, which the population will support more heavily.

I think we can officially chalk it up to stubborness from this point on, unless you can actually present a case. I'll be waiting on you or Lecter or whoever else to show me, as was once claimed, that Ray Charles was more popular than Johnny Cash. :hahaha:

You did listen to your gut, and it told you "come back to reality". You're listening to that same little voice again, and once again, it's leading you down the wrong path. Seriously, 100 million is a no brainer for this.

Besides the fact that I don't really know much facts or really anything about these two artists (prior to seeing their moies, Cash's which hasn't been released yet, so I haven't seen), I know better than to enter into this debate with Maverikk.

I do think that Ray is more popular at the moment. It doesn't matter how popular they were at the height of their careers Mav, it's how the public sees them today. I don't have any evidence or facts to back that up, it's just my opinion, so tear it to shreds if you like, I'm not informed enough to rebuddle.

That beings said.... I think this movie does have a better chance than Ray of surpassing $100m.
I think ALOT of its potential lies in its prime release date. If it weren't for Thanksgiving weekend, the film might not have the boost to make it past $100m. Ray was released in late October and survived throughout the entire Oscar race and still didn't crack $80m.

The only way and the only reason Walk the Line can reach the century mark is if it survives throughout the Oscar season, which means grabbing a Best Picture nod which certainly looks in its favor at this point. Aside from that, the star appeal of this biopic is far greater than Ray. Pheonix and Witherspoon are both established celebrities and moviestars while last year was Jamie Foxx's breakout time in the drama/movie-star field.

I'm not in the bandwagon yet and I do have my doubts, but at this point there's more reason to belive (just slightly more) that Walk the Line can do just that crossing the $100m mark than not.

Mav- I'm halfway through a quite long post proving that you're arguments thus far are faulty, its on the tab-bar on my downstairs computer. Unfortunatly my brother and company came in and he is using the computer right now.

Just you wait.

In the meantime, I could've waited and put this on the end of my other post, but here goes:

For the entire thread this movie is being compared to Coal Miner's Daughter, and how that was a gigantic success. Lets look at a different southern biopic, with genuine buzz for the lead actors, and how well it did:

Great Balls of Fire:

Opening: $3,807,986
Total: $13,741,060

Now of course Walk the Line should outgross that, but you can't say just because Walk the Line is similar to Coal Miner's Daughter, that it will have as much a mark on the audience, and resonate as much as Coal Miner's Daughter. We're 28 years later now. Thats no proof for Walk the Line getting 100 mil.

I hope that's not the best you've got...

Great Balls of Fire was critically panned, Jerry Lee Lewis was nowhere near as big as Loretta Lynn or Johnny Cash, it opened in June against all that summer competition that was in 1989, etc, etc, etc...

Comeon, you can do better than that. :giggle:

Hmm? Panned? Or are you the one making up facts out of nowhere now?

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/great_balls_of_fire/

Not bad at all. Its not fantastic reviews, but its better than an absolute flop should get. I wasn't around back then, but from what I've read Quaid was robbed of a nomination/possible win that year. Baldwin too. In any case the unanimous decision is that the acting was superb in that movie, awards superb, and yet it flops like that? It proves that Southern biopic isn't automatically a Coal Miner's Daughter sized success.

EDIT- And Jerry Lee Lewis is big.
