Post So will Poseidon open below or above $30 million?
Since this seems to be the mark that most are arguing currently. Anything below $30 million would be severly disappointing for the film. I mean even a bit above it, would make the film a domestic flop, but it'd still give it a good chance to recover with international returns and DVD. If, however, it doesn't pass $30 million for the opening in the US, it'll be quite a struggle.

Reel Source and MTC are tracking it at $21 million currently, while the interest in the film doesn't seem to be very high. The WoM will probably be mixed considering all I read so far, but it is at least getting 3,500+ theatres and enough screens to manage at least a PTA of $8,000 considering the marketplace is rather empty now except for M:I-3.

So, you think Poseidon will pass $30 million in its opening weekend or open below that?

I think it WILL pass the mark, but just barely. I see an opening around $30.5 million.

Over. Peterson is a dab hand when it comes to water bound movies and this type of film appeals to a broad enough range of cinemagoers to make a 40m+ opening very possible.

Great thread given the tug-of-war between the dismal tracking numbers and the more optimistic posters here:

For me, i'm OVER at $42M. I'm sensing it's got a viable pulse.

I'm just seeing no buzz for this movie. I'm thinking tracking is going to be right on this weekend and I wouldn't be surprised if this went lower.

History has shown that ships being capsized by giant waves don't need buzz

History has also shown that Kurt Russell never opens a movie above 24 million too
I think they were better off combining the plot of Boat Trip with Ghost Ship with a little blend of Titanic

Clearly, Kurt Russel is riding high off his SKY HIGH success and this will open to over 60.

BTW, how did you hold up last semester? Decided what type of librarian you want to be yet?

Over.

MI:3 took this year's Kingdom of Heaven disappointment prize leaving the door open for Poseidon to outperform expectations.

There is a small cult following of the original who are interested in this version. MI3 sucked ass and it is summer summer already regardless of what's out there so lack of anything out there will just make it the movei to see by default.

so, yes, it will open to $30+ million. easily.

Right now that's what I'm thinking, but it could change before the end of the week.

Dolce doesn't really believe it will open to less than 30 or she'd have made a bet about it.

Actually MI3 took this year's XXX2(MI3 not as big of a bomb but both are machismo action flicks), I even mentioned that when The Island bombed. Poseidon will take this years KOH as I have mentioned again in the past

A lot of the same people saying that no way Poseidon will make over 30, were also saying no way MI:3 makes less than 60.
