... Volume 1

Yeah, so this is an idea that torri and I have been cookin' up for a long time now, and we (more like I) finally got motivated enough to upload some songs to the space torri is graciously letting me use.

So, the main idea of this it to, every week, expose all of you guys to a band that you may or may not have heard of. We'll provide you with some tracks, and we'll give you our thoughts on them. Some weeks, it'll be stuff both torri and I like, and other weeks it'll be stuff just he likes or stuff just I like. Either way, you're going to get our honest opinion on the music, and hopefully you'll find some great new bands that you never would have heard of without torri and makeshift's Weekly Musical Extravaganza. That's the idea, at least... [-o<



I'm going to start our first volume off with an all female punk/indie/emo band called Sleater-Kinney. Now, torri is not a fan (i'm sure he'll be perfectly happy to share the specifics with us later :wink: ), but I most definitely am. The tracks i'm going to be posting are from their album "Call the Doctor", which was released in 1996 under the label Chainsaw. I'll start with a personal favorite of mine...

Sleater-Kinney - Good Things

Yeah, so I love this song. The first thing most of you will probably notice is the lead singers' voice - or lack thereof. It does indeed take awhile to get used to, but it fits the typical "old school emo" model that most vocals had. Rushed, urgent, tense, hurtful... I love it. I'ts not for everybody, but if you can get used to it, it's the best out there. It may not be techincally sound, but you can feel her words, which to me is more important. And speaking of the words, what words they are. Some lyrics...

In my opinion, amazing stuff. It's very simple, but you can identify with it immediately.

As for the music, I think it's great, too. It is also very stereotypical of the "old school emo" model. It is constantly building and building to a crescendo that may not ever come. It heightens the sense of urgency that the vocals already provide, and it makes you take in the emotional potency of the song. You really feel like this is something that needs to be said.

Okay, well that should be about it for the the first volume of torri and makeshift's Weekly Musical Extravaganza. Here's some more girly punk that's a bit better (don't shoot me, makeshift) than the wild Sleater-Kinney. The Sleater-Kinney singer has an annoying, cringe-worthy voice that's consistently out of tune. It isn't bad, though.

Girly punk is the theme for the week. Even if you didn't like the Sleater-Kinney, try the bands above. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are spontaneous and Karen O is by far the most hyper and crazy (seriously. she performed in a wheelchair while injured!) singer out there. Don't look for anything lyrically special, though. The Distillers is pretty hard. It's loud, noisy, and the lead singer sounds like she's got a permanent sore throat. It, however, defines true punk. It's great. Rilo Kiley was a band makeshift introduced me to. The above is a live recording from a DC concert. The song is quiet, and it's not real punk (more like emo). It's different from the other bands...

Punk. Yuk.

I really like all music ... and punk is no exception really ... but it isn't one of my favorites and I deffinatly have to be in a certain mood. I will take a listen later if I get the urge

I listened to the first sleeter kinney song and it was okay, though i felt as if they were copying the Cranberries a bit in terms of style.

I love my Tech Nina, Hieroglyphics, Atmosphere, The Roots, Jedi Mind Tricks, and a lotta other rap. I have to agree with you, though, that Missy Elliot does have talent. She's got some funny lyrics and she never comes off slutty like Lil' Kim. Mature, amusing, and talented, I guess

Most YYY stuff is. I went through a day where, like, Y Control was the only song I listened to.

Y Control is probably one of my top twenty favorite songs of all time.

I'd just like to chime in and say for those of you that are kinda scared to dive head in to full out punk, check out the Rilo Kiley song torri added. It's really, really good, and really listener friendly.

I would say that out of those four bands listed, the favorite sample was from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Didnt really like the voices for the Distillers or Sleater. Not that the lead singer is that great for the yeah yeah yeahs, but the song seemed more original to me than any of the others. Rilo definately has the best singer, but its a little generic to me.

The Distillers and Sleater both have the grating, threatening voices. Karen (YYYs) is virtually harmless, she's just...crazy.

I'm glad that you liked one of 'em, though...

I like the song by Rilo Kelley, but "City of Angels" was not my tastes.

Sleater Kinney was a little bit better than the Yeah yeah Yeahs. But that's not saying much. l didnt really like either. Or Rilo Kiley. The Distillers were the best, l think.

Egads! I've been on vacation for the last couple of days, and I came back to PM's from torri wanting to know what to do this week for Volume 2. I guess he's out of town now, so i'm not sure. We had a couple of ideas floating around... I guess if you guy's don't see a new volume until the weekend, you'll know why.

They're (legally!) streaming the new album. I'll try to rip some of it for the sake of my iPod (I actually...like it!), so if you want the album (it won't be the greatest quality, as I'm streaming at 96 right now), PM me.

The other three songs up here are growing on me. The new album sounds kinda, I dunno, like a hybrid between those three songs, The Donnas, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Until you get to "Let's Call it Love" which is awesome (11 minutes of guitar and little vocals...).

I love the Yeah Yeah Yeahs... Is Art Star from their EP that came out before the FTT album?

Oh, and Rilo Kiley's song is so good. I've had it for a while... I should check her album out.
