I think that honour goes to Kelly Clarkson  , who did it with Breakaway and Since U Been Gone. Breakaway's longevity is most impressive. 41 weeks, wow.

Glad to see Mariah at the top again. When was the last time this happened, like, 8 or 9 years ago? It's just a little sad to see a pale effort like We Belong Together making it to the top over previous stuff like Bringin' on the Heartbreak. (I don't disklike We Belong Together, I just think it's kind of blah.)

No, as recently as 2000-2001 actually with Thank God I Found You collaboration with Joe and 98 Degrees
I'm so happy that she made it, i was getting worried that her downloads might not be sufficient - which is quite strange because her past #1s have all been major success in sales and not airplay (i.e. Thank God I Found You). BTW - i remember hearing that Gwen Stefani's downloads were boosted by free download offers on Yahoo ITunes or something.....hmm anyway, Mariah is #1 and that's all that matters, let's hope she can hold it for a couple of weeks (i see danger in the form of Black Eyed Peas and Kelly Clarkson's Behind These Hazel Eyes).
We Belong Together is one of the best songs in her career - i love it so much  - and i'm glad the rest of the nation is really enjoying it, it's airplay is through the roof

Im starting to really lose faith even further in American music. I mean; amoungst the sea of shitty rnb music you guys continue to unleash on the world [next time shove it up your ass and save everyone the bother, R.Kelly] the one time you guys do decide to put a pop artist in the top ten you give a singer with only "pretty good" songs two top ten hits? [Although Since you been Gone is far superior to Behind these Hazel Eyes and is generally just a catchy tune - it sinks into B+ in the pedigree of pop] I Suppose its better than giving 50 cent all your money again.
From a reasonably objective foriegner's point of view there is little thats massively special about Kelly Clarkston's music ; god knows ive tried to see what you all orgasm over but nope....i got nothin. She knows how to spawn reasonably good and solid pop songs - but do they deserve to rank higher than so many of previous years pop pedigrees which have failed in America? [but usually have performed outstandingly offshores] No. No they dont.
Hell even Natasha Beddingfields "These Words" is a better pop song than Behind these Hazel Eyes AND Since U Been Gone [even though i like both of the latter] The thing is; whilst i like Clarkson there are many, many other pop artists who deserve bigger sales and success with higher quality songs...
But on the whole Rnb Rap thing - PLEASE stop making that shit music America.
Seriously.
I KNOW you guys have good artists. Just buy those artists records already jeeze

If by older stuff you mean her early spanish work, I agree...by far.
But it's much better than anything off Laundry Service. I'm just glad to see a foreign language song doing well on the charts. It could probably be a better song, but this isn't bad.
The video makes Kelis' Milkshake look like something some religious artist (distributed by Disney) would do.

I woudln't talk considering you're willing to give "artists" like britney spears your money. You have much in common to the people across the pond.

Ya, I wasn't referring to that one English song that everyone adores. Whatever, Whenever or whatever. Not that I don't like it. But I really enjoy her early work. La Tortura is NOT a bad song, but not as catchy as her other stuff. I still like it. And looking at that video - I have to wonder if she is double jointed? Wew.

Well, from another foreigner's point of view.
Kelly Clarkson has the most impressive vocal talents in the music industry at the moment. Her songs, in my opinion, BREAKAWAY, SINCE U BEEN GONE and BEHIND THESE HAZEL EYES are all far far far superior to Natasha Bedingfields squeeky vocals mixed with irritating synths in THESE WORDS, and actually SINGLE, BRUISE EASILY and UNWRITTEN.
I'm just glad KELLY CLARKSON is one of the bigges things in pop over there at the moment.
I mean, 2,300,000 albums sold, and she's still in the top 20 albums. And now:
BREAKAWAY reaching Number 6 on Billboard, going double platinum AND staying in the top 50 for 41 weeks.
SINCE U BEEN GONE going to Number 2 on Billboard (being the first pop song to get so high since Christina's BEAUTIFUL), going Double platinum and lasting 25 weeks in the top 50. Currently at Number 7.
BEHIND THESE HAZEL EYES reaching Number 8 in just 7 weeks of release.
Kelly rocks.
And more good news. SINCE U BEEN GONE is Number 3 on Box Tops over here in the Uk at the moment.
So hopefully her single can reach top 10 when it's released.

I'd love it if Since U Been Want went top 3 over there.
Michael would have a meltdown
Miss Independent went top 10 so I don't see why Since U Been Gone would do at least as well.

Michael would not have a meltdown. Did people just see my post as a massive flashing
"DIE KELLY CLARKSON AND FUCK AMERICAN MUSIC"
because that is not what it was...not at all. I like Clarkson but i still feel that she lacks the charisma and you know, memorability to be a star. Theres no denying shes a solid voice and has some pretty damn good pop tracks. But am i going to be singing Since u Been Gone in 12 years? Unlikely.
Since U Been Gone should do top 10 here.
I was just generally venting at how im totally miffed at America's music purchasing and listening habits which ultimately affect every other country in the world.
I hate so much music right now; including britpop.

Do you think Europe dosen't know that? Do you think we all bop along and love the Eurovision just because we are European?
Its popular BECAUSE its so awful and kitsch. Not because theres any talent there at all. Thank god we have a commentator whos quite aware of the shows awful campness - he injects fun into it by basically ripping everyone to peices.
And believe it or not, Before AMERICAN IDOL there was POP IDOL in the UK.....where people can infact sing and make music too.
Remember The Beatles? Rolling Stones? Robbie Williams?
