21st Annual WOKJ Awards FYC Thread
Since there's not one, I figured I'd start one. You know what to do. If someone wants to pin this that would be great.

Re: 21st Annual WOKJ Awards FYC Thread
I'll get things started with an FYC for my favorite film of the year. FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION THE SUBSTANCE IN ALL CATEGORIES INCLUDINGBEST PICTURE BEST DIRECTOR (Coralie Fargeat) BEST ACTRESS (Demi Moore) BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS (Margaret Qualley) BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY BEST EDITING BEST ORIGINAL SCORE BEST MAKEUP BEST VISUAL EFFECTS BEST ART DIRECTION BEST COSTUME DESIGN BREAKTHROUGH OF THE YEAR (Coralie Fargeat) BEST SOUND SCARIEST HORROR FUNNIEST COMEDY BEST NEEDLE DROP (Pump it Up - Endor) The Substance is one of 2024’s best films, both a cinematic dream and nightmare, that pushes the envelope way beyond the norm, and glories in its own audacity... a breathtaking and sumptuous work of art that screams in your face while blowing you a kiss. Dolores Quintana, Santa Monica Mirror
Wickedly audacious and boldly over-the-top, "The Substance" is a biting, hilarious and stomach-churningly disgusting satire of modern beauty standards and Hollywood's obsession with youth, staged as a deranged midnight movie freak-out. Adam Graham, Detroit News
The Substance goes so hard for so many different reasons, resulting in something that is completely bonkers, while also being astute and thoughtful. Wilson Kwong, Film Inquiry
It’s the most squirm-inducing movie in many a moon – a grotesque, crude and erratic picture as bonkers as a Troma Entertainment feature. It’s also one of 2024’s best films. Calum Cooper, Cinerama Film
Writer/director Coralie Fargeat gives Demi Moore arguably the most go-for-broke, layered role of her career as a fading star pushing on that one button even the most desperate souls shouldn’t. The result is bold but not for the squeamish. Dan Buffa, Ramble On With Buffa (Substack)
The unshakeable imagery and the characters' revelations about the savagery of fame, the female experience and the self-inflicted damage to maintain a facade of perfection make 'The Substance' the best cinematic offering of 2024. Preston Barta, Denton Record-Chronicle
The Substance is a truly deranged, cinematic high. And you will beg for another dose. Joey Moser, The Contending
The final act of The Substance is a big, bloody screw-you to the system that perpetuates such horrors, and a reminder to women to respect the balance within ourselves – to not give in to the voices inside that tell us we’re not good enough. Natasha Alvar, The Fiction Department
The movie is a huge spectacle, and it keeps getting bigger as it goes along, but what's great is that it's never just indulging for the sake of it. Tim Brayton, Alternate Ending
An inventive horror story that tackles the ageism, sexism, and the unattainable beauty standards in today’s society. Demi Moore in sensational. Rene Sanchez, Cine Sin Fronteras
The heightened and surreal environment adds to The Twilight Zone-esque tale of beauty standards and body horror. [...] The makeup and effects team deserve all the love for really transforming both actors throughout the film in bold and grotesque ways. Kristen Maldonado, Pop Culture Planet" The Substance" is one of those rare films that excels in nearly every category, making it one of the finest examples of the year. This film fires on all cylinders. Despite its surprising success during the awards season, it's been criminally overlooked in most technical categories. How the instantly iconic score isn't getting the recognition it deserves is beyond me. I remember the scores from two 2024 movies, and this one stands out as the best by far. It's a score that, if I heard it years from now, I'd instantly recall the movie it belongs to. Not only is the score being under-appreciated, but so is the cinematography. It's baffling to see it receive so many top-tier nominations while these crucial elements are ignored. It's a real shame. Let's not make that same mistake! The film is streaming on MUBI and can be purchased digitally or physically, but if you haven't seen it and will have a chance to see it in a theater, DO IT! This masterpiece should be seen on the big screen, especially if you're lucky enough to see it with a crowd.

Re: 21st Annual WOKJ Awards FYC Thread
There have been several times where the same person was very nearly voted in for both lead and supporting actor (Ralph Fiennes in The Menu comes to mind) but I don't think it has ever happened.

I am not going to campaign much but can we give Beetlejuice Beetlejuice some love? It was a pretty awesome sequel 36 years later with a fresh spin so give it some kudos in your ballot!

Ariana Grande for Wicked is probably my only vote this year or Jeff Goldblum for underrated if that is a category. I just don’t see movies like I did in the first half of the 2010s anymore

Yeah i think thats the case for most of us. I recall seeing so many films in 2013 (granted a great year for film) but just a handful now.

Is that because you’re watching something else, or because life keeps you from watching much content at all?

Fewer must-see end of year prestige/quality pics that I make the time to go see (though this can change from year to year) 2. Busier with life so makes it more difficult 3. A bit of a shift to seeing more family friendly/blockbuster pics now that the kids are 10 and 14 (things like Godzilla X Kong, Planet of the Apes, Mufasa, Sonic etc) That said - I had a day off yesterday and did go and see both The Brutalist and A Complete Unknown. I'm glad I did!

Re: 21st Annual WOKJ Awards FYC Thread
I would still be watching everything but I was given cruel fate by the universe, I come from "emotionally unavailable" family and I think something genetic kicked in and made me kind of a shell overall in a way that also affects watching entertainment. I hope one day to get past it and have movie years as good as early 2010s again.

Re: 21st Annual WOKJ Awards FYC Thread
For original song I have:
The Art of Dying from Terrifier 3 Kiss The Sky from Wild Robot
And thats it. Weak category in terms of depth even though both those songs are really good. Guess I'll fill the rest out with Moana 2 songs. Needle drop doesn't have an obvious winner like like last year, but was still alot easier to fill out.

Re: 21st Annual WOKJ Awards FYC Thread
FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION SMILE 2 IN ALL CATEGORIES INCLUDINGBEST ACTRESS (Naomi Scott) BEST EDITING BEST MAKEUP BEST VISUAL EFFECTS BEST ART DIRECTION BEST COSTUME DESIGN BEST SOUND SCARIEST HORROR BEST ORIGINAL SONG (New Brain - Skye Riley/Naomi Scott) BEST ORIGINAL SONG (Blood On White Satin - Skye Riley/Naomi Scott) BEST ORIGINAL SONG (Death Of Me - Skye Riley/Naomi Scott) BEST ORIGINAL SONG (Grieved You - Sky Riley/Naomi Scott) BEST ORIGINAL SONG (Just My Name - Sky Riley/Naomi Scott) One of the best and scariest cinematic experiences of the year. Naomi Scott's performance in SMILE 2 should be studied and I haven't been able to get the songs out of my head, incredible soundtrack! Lauren Veneziani, WBAL-TV (Baltimore)
Smile 2 has stunning visuals, incredible production design, and genuine scares. Naomi Scott is fantastic in the lead and this is a sequel that lives up to the original - even if it may not surpass it Matt Hudson, Bloody Awesome Movie Podcast
"Smile 2 is more than just another horror film. It’s a dark mirror reflecting the hidden burdens of fame, the pain behind a smile, and the fragility of the human mind." Gabriela Meza, Fuera de Foco
While 2022’s Smile is a perfectly cromulent movie, Smile 2 is destined to be one of the films mentioned in the pantheon of sequels that outshine the original. It really is that good. Deirdre Crimmins, That Shelf
Smile 2 is a masterwork of terror, a sequel that doesn’t just go bigger but better in all the right ways. Nicolás Delgadillo, Knotfest
Naomi Scott delivers the best 2024 performance as a world-famous performer, fictional or fact-based Sarah Vincent, Sarah G Vincent Views
Naomi Scott's performance is outstanding - one of the best of the year. Bigger, badder & more stylish, this sequel is superior to the original. Skye Riley's descent into madness results in one of the best horror films of 2024. Fico Cangiano, CineXpressThanks to Smile 2, I won't have to struggle for original song nominations. The soundtrack slapped and it will be criminal if it doesn't score some nods here.

FYC We Live In Time if you're in the mood for one of those cancer movies where you know what's going to happen to them at the end. Both actors will definitely be on my ballot.

Re: 21st Annual WOKJ Awards FYC Thread
Did anyone here watch Skincare with Elizabeth Banks and Lewis Pullman? I saw it in the theater and should have done an FYC for it but didn't get around to making many of them. It's a really fun flick though and I'd recommend it. It's easily my favorite Elizabeth Banks performance.

Re: 21st Annual WOKJ Awards FYC Thread
Supporting versus Lead, even my own distinctions make no sense, but this is where I placed some of the nominees:
Margaret Qualley -- Supporting (Demi is Lead)
Kieran Culkin -- Lead (also Jesse Eisenberg, I think his performance in A Real Pain is underrated)
Ariana Grande -- Supporting
Josh O'Connor -- Lead (and also Supporting because I was having trouble filling that category)
