Please accept with no obligation, expressed or implied, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low-stress, non-addictive, gender-neutral, celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practice of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasion and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all. I also wish a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling, and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2017, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make your country great. This is, of course, neither to suggest or imply that your country is necessarily greater than any other country. May these heartfelt wishes be received with equal intensity regardless of distribution of individual wealth, documented carbon footprint, or perceived social privilege among the wishes addressed herein. This wish is made without regard to the race, creed, colour, age, physical ability, religious faith, or sexual preference of the wishee.

Merry Christmas is as generic and uncaring as "good morning"

Uncaring would be not saying it at all.

It's not like you don't mean it when you say it. I also like good morning, you can tell a lot about someone's current mood off of their response. But then you have no obligation to inquire why it's good or bad unless you choose too.

Nah. I've noticed that most "good morning" and "how are you" greetings are as you're walking by someone you know, and only say because saying nothing would be weird.

I've had many a time where someone says how are you to me while walking by, I answer 'good' and ask them how they are, and get nothing in return.

Disagree. You don't say "good morning" or "how are you?" to fill an awkward gap and passing moment as you walk by. You say "hey" and/or nod your head.
