Mankell had been been suffering from cancer for several years and "passed away peacefully" in the Swedish city of Gothenburg, publishing house Leopard said on its website.
Mankell's collection of Wallander crime novels set in southern Sweden brought the author international fame after it was made into a television series by Britains's BBC starring Kenneth Branagh.
A novelist and playwright who lived in both Sweden and Mozambique, Mankell published more than 20 novels and a dozen children's books.
