Post Common word mix-ups or spelling mistakes?
David got me wondering because his spelling and word choice is always so fucking perfect, does he make any mistakes? Does he mix up and words where he never remembers the right word to use in the right place? I'm sure David is not too proud to tell us his foibles.

For example, a common mistake is for people to use "effect" when they meant "affect" and vice versa. There are countless other examples.

One of mine until recently was that I always got "eluded" mixed up with "alluded". Most of the time I meant to use the latter but used the former.

What common mistakes do you make or DID you make but have recently cracked down on?

I've recently started to use the word "whom" more after learning about cases in German class.

The real meaning of "eluded" eluded you.

I have no idea when to use and when not to use whom/who. I use them whenever I feel like it.

I always spell "intrigue" wrong without spell check. Tend to mix up the i, g, and/or u.

I find myself writing "movie" instead of "move."

I hate and try to avoid the word "like."

I also do this. I think it comes with being a movie fan.

Yeah, this thread is kind of aimed at native English speakers.

Lecter, Magnus, and Excel make loads of mistakes. Actually, two of those three might be native speakers. I am really not sure.

Yes effect/affect has caused me issues in the past. I often use "impact" as a replacement.

I always seem to mix up, can/ can't, would/ wouldn't, etc. when I want to write the one, I write the other by mistake..

Yeah, but you're Dutch. And mostly it is just fast typing that causes this. If you slowed down, you would be fine.

Homophones are the bane of my existence, but I usually catch myself as soon as I type out the wrong one.

When I'm on my phone I mix letters because stupid WP has a key where it changes keyboards from Croatian to English and vice-versa and I often hit it which changes keyboard style and size and it goes from qwerty to qwertz and I'm too lazy to fix things. Also spell checker thinks it knows better than me what I need to write and again I don't care too much about fixing things if it seems like everyone will know what I wanted to write.

Agreed.

Dude, communication is about so much more than that. There are complicated words for a reason; because they are to be used when 'simple' will just not completely explain the message one intends to convey.

'Simplest way possible' doesn't imply simplicity.

I understand. But communication isn't solely about that. Communication can be about many things such as intentionally misleading, exaggerating, impressing, insulting, confusing etc. etc. It's not merely a tool to convey a message as simply as possible. It is that, but not only that.

That was needless. ;)

So do you have any regular spelling mistakes? (as that is what the thread is about).

Dude, I'm playing you like a balalaika. You just can't see it through your recent explanations of such basic shit. I tried giving you a hint in this thread, but you didn't twig.

Let's leave that there; care to contribute to the thread topic?
