Post Wash. Navy Yard shooting; multiple deaths, injuries
Quote:
Multiple people were killed and several more wounded when at least one gunman opened fire Monday at the Naval Sea Systems Command headquarters, authorities said.

The Navy said "several" people were killed at the Navy Yard. Local media said at least three were dead and several more people were wounded.

Washington's Metropolitan Police Department reported that a suspect was on the loose in the building. The shooter was described as a black male with a dark complexion, approximately 5'10" to 6 feet tall, 170 pound with a black shirt and black hat. He is believed to be barricaded somewhere and have multiple guns.

The Navy day began with the Navy reporting on its Twitter feed that there was an "active shooter" at Building 197 at the Navy Yard, and that three shots had been fired at 8:20 a.m. ET. The Navy later reported deaths and injuries, but details remained fluid.

Flights at nearby Washington Reagan National Airport were being disrupted, with all departures halted at the airport as of 10 a.m. ET.

The White House released a statement: "The president has been briefed several times about the unfolding situation at the Washington Navy Yard by Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism Lisa Monaco and Deputy Chief of Staff Alyssa Mastromanaco. The President directed his team to stay in touch with our federal partners, including the Navy and FBI, as well as the local officials. We urge citizens to listen to the authorities and follow directions from the first responders on site."

They announced this on their Twitter feed?? :funny:

The first thing they thought when this happened was "Oh, I'd better update the status on Twitter". Ridiculous. No wonder the world laughs at Yanks.

Eh, it sounds absurd when phrased your idiosyncratic way, but Twitter is the new standard for communication with the public and the dissemination of information, important or otherwise, so I do not see a problem here.

It is an easy and fast way to release information regarding an ongoing situation to a frightened and interested public. The medium suits the need suits the event. Again, no problem.

It's only easy and fast if people are following The Navy. I can't imagine too many follow The Navy as I suspect the news is pretty fucking boring.

Twitter is becoming/has become the go to for a lot of people for news. It has broken TONS of stories and will continue to do so.

As for the shooting. Awful stuff.

(If only they had guns to protect themselves!)

I was wondering why my flight home to D.C. today was delayed and then I heard about this.

Le sigh. Hopefully there are no more deaths from what has transpired.

I wonder what the motive is: furlough rage intensified by the potential of an expensive Syrian bombing campaign?

Libs floated the idea it might be proud sons of Barry Farm on bath salts.

Wonder if this will lead to an uptick in base security levels for the foreseeable future and not just today? I was at NAVAIR (not NAVSEA) a couple of weeks ago and you could get on the base just with a guest pass with no pat-down or car inspection or anything, so long as you were with a military ID holder. Nobody checked my ID while on base walking around unescorted.

Of course, more facts will come out and we will get a better understanding of what happened here.

As for Twitter, it is my go-to news source for quick links to tons of news and it breaks much faster than traditional websites or newspapers or tv.

I live by and often go to a Navy base, and, yes, it is very easy to get on as long as you have or are with a person who has a military ID.

I doubt this will change much. The guards at the gate might request to hold the ID rather than just see it from afar, and they might glance a second or two longer at the people in each car, but I highly doubt anything else will be put in place. It would be too inefficient to search every car or even every third or every fourth car.

Agree. I found more security at the National Archives (armed officers guarding the Constitution) than are on base or pretty much any of the other Federal Buildings, excluding White House and Capital. I could walk up to the front door of the Canadian Embassy no questions asked and saw nobody except tourists.

Not saying we necessarily need more security, since they are all the people's buildings and I think easy public access to them is part of our heritage, but it seems like every year there is some random shooting at one of these sites due to disgruntled/crazy/political disagreements and maybe a tad more could be done. Who knows. Probably overreacting in the moment.

:(

WP: Aaron Alexis, 34, identified as the dead gunman; possible suspect at large

The dead guy had a history of violence.

Quote:
A story posted on the Web site of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram Monday said that Alexis was arrested in 2010 for illegally discharging a firearm. The paper cited a Fort Worth police report that said police had been dispatched to Alexis’ apartment complex about 6:40 p.m. Sept. 4, 2010, on a report that someone had fired a shot through the floor and into the ceiling of a woman’s apartment.

Police found that Alexis had fired a shot through the ceiling of his apartment, missing his upstairs neighbor by a few feet. Alexis later said his gun had gone off while he was cleaning it, the paper said.

This is like something Tarantino would write. Crazy killer, killed not by cops, but by cleaning his own gun.

Reminds me of a scene in Out of Sight.

You do realize he said he was cleaning his gun when he was arrested a few years ago for firing into the roof of his apartment? He did not shoot himself today while cleaning his gun.

Reading more about this case, and it is early and new information could change things, but it really seems like the entire mental health care system, including the VA, really let this guy down. I agree that taking away someone's freedom because of a hunch about mental illness should require very high hurdles and state's vary in their laws concerning hospitalizing people that may act like they have a mental illness, but things like the below, and that he apparently sought treatment from the VA (details sketchy on that), leave me with the idea that somehow we failed this guy and, more importantly, all of those people he shot.

Quote:
"In the weeks before the attack on the Navy Yard, Alexis reported hearing voices and said that three people were sending vibrations through the ceiling to keep him from sleeping, police said Tuesday.

"Police in Newport, R.I., said that Alexis called them to a Marriott hotel there on the morning of Aug.

"7 and reported that he was being followed and was worried that the people were going to hurt him.
Alexis told police that the three talked to him through the walls, floor or ceiling at three hotels — two commercial hotels in Rhode Island and one on a naval base there. He told them that they used a microwave machine to send vibrations and keep him awake."

News flash

Almost all these shooters are lunatics of one form or another and on psychotropic drugs of some kind. So enough with let's ban guns from 99% of citizens who aren't crazy...it's so old it's sleep inducing at this point. Feinstein couldn't wait to read the dailies as this happened. Can she retire already!

What's needed ?

Stricter mental health standards when attempting to use you 2A right. Very strong threshold decided by a judge if that right should be taken away from folks who are potentially crazy with a history.
Oh and uh put freaking security on these bases or allow citizens on those bases to CC.
Another gun free zone attacked by a mentally ill patient. Deja vu.

You know what would solve this?

Banning all guns.
