Why there is a monarchy in the UK still and why it even has relevance? Why their citizens fawn over these folks I have no idea. I dread the day that Prince William becomes King.

I think the majority of British people do NOT fawn over the Royal Family, actually. They are there merely as a tourist attraction. Foreigners adore them, and they love coming to the UK to see them and their buildings.

Personally, I couldn't care less about the Royal Family as I'm not a Royalist, and everyone I've spoken to is not either. I've never met anyone that is interested in them or thinks they should remain. They all think they're a waste of space.

I've read somewhere they actually generate a decent amount of money from tourism.

People say lets get rid of them but they draw in a lot of attention and tourism to the UK and believe it or not, a lot of people do care for the monarchy in some way.

After time has passed since Diana and films like the Queen and The Kings Speech giving a favourable light to the Monarchy and the marriage of William and Kate... The monarchy is actually more popular then its been in a long time....
In 2012 80% of Brits had a favourable view of the Queen..

I think getting rid of it while the current Queen is in power would be wrong and she serves the role well, by God Save us from King Charles... :funny:

In Canada and Australia its strange, ever since Kate and William married support for keeping ties to the Crown increases to near majority or majority support.

So due to Will and Kate, the monarchy is staying for a long time.

Yes. Wine made it worse than it could have been.

The wedding was so overblown during the news it was just annoying. I had to cover this town in Maryland that had declared an actual "Royal Wedding Day" and the town was made to look like the UK, had royal guards, tea, and multiple weddings throughout the day with the event on a mega screen. One cool thing is they shot canyons which I had never seen before. That made the whole thing almost worth it.

I think the symbol they represent is more important than the actual family at this point, much like the Pope. People like getting a glimpse into the world's history. There's not so many things from 500+ years ago that still get so much attention all over the world.

I agree people like spectacle.

I did not care for the wedding but I still watch the royal procession as you never see such elegantly dressed soldiers riding horses these days... It was quite a spectacle .

They should send them to the unemployment line and make Buckinham Palace a museum, and I'm British btw. They are part of a disgusting system of privilege that pervades society in many ways, eliminating them permanently should be part of dismantling that system (which also benefits white people, men, straight people, the rich, etc...and I also say this being a member of several of those groups).

Dismantling the Royal would do nothing to resolve income equality

That's a humorous pic to be sure, but wouldn't it have been more fitting to have a representative of France or America terrorizing the children of Vietnam?

I am in Canada, people just like to accuse the Royals of a lot of waste and such but in the end they are not the issue.

I'm British and I've been living in Canada for two years now, and I have never heard anyone talk about the Royals outside of "isn't it funny the queen is still on our bills lol".

Where do you live exactly, is it Quebec or near me in Toronto?

My life in Canada has shown me people dont hate the monarchy but are just indifferent to it. No one really hates, a bunch of people of like it and no one really wants to get in the debate of getting rid of it. Getting rid of it really adds nothing and any flaws with Canadian democracy are not with the monarchy but with the electoral system.

People dont care about the Royals in Canada but no one uses silly arguments like they are responsible for the inequality of the world and nonsense like that.

I agree people do not care about the Royals here but when the question comes around to getting rid of it, people back off according to every single poll here in Canada especially in the past two years. They are just there and people are indifferent and some people dislike them but a large portion like them.

Recent poll in 2011 and after says so... I think the momentum shifted with Will and Kates toured the country in 2011..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Debate_on_ ... anada#2011
Numbers are quite interesting as the people of Quebec which is about 25% of the population totally dislike the monarchy, so support is indeed far higher in English Canada.
The reasons are numerous, people like Will Kate and that has increased the Royals popularity, getting rid of it would create a constitutional disaster, huge costs in changing everything and change it to what?

I think though when the Current Queen passes, the momentum could perhaps shift back towards getting rid of the monarchy.

So my point was people don't care about the royals, but , but the intense hatred that they inspired a decade or so ago due to Diana has diminshed greatly.

So, we can debate getting rid of it but passed on public opinion polls, its not happening when Queen Elizabeth is alive.
