Post Are We Weird?
I'll answer that...most definitely not. (at least not collectively 8-[ )

I was thinking about this a little bit, and how it's quite easy to be self conscious about the "weirdness" of hanging out online, coming to the forums, obsessing over crunching money values that aren't going into any of our bank accounts , having pretend awards shows that we dedicate big parts of our day to, and making it a routine in our daily lives. It's easy to feel uneasy about our time here when thinking about what the person with the "normal" life is doing, but that's what I wanted to discuss, and if you see it like I do, the "normal" life is kinda boring by comparison.

What does the average Joe (or Joanna) do for recreation in their "normal" day? Well, some sit on their big asses and stare at a TV until bedtime. Lots of folks do that. That's "normal". Lot's of folks head to the bar after work and drink their paychecks away. That's "normal". Lots of folks have a routine of taking a nap for a few hours after work or school. That's "normal". Lot's of people go and visit their friends for an hour or 2, and not always everyday. That's "normal". Some people go play bingo. "That's "normal".

What does the average WOKJ member do for recreation. We all do some of those things, if not all, but we also get together every single day of our lives with people that we have so much in common with. Does anybody "normal" get so lucky? We are always using our brains, as this is about as interactive as it gets. Would anybody really rather site in front of a TV, a video game, or sit on a bar stool? A good portion of our lives do revolve around movies, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Everybody has their own thing, some have more than one , and for those who don't, or are too kewl to embrace their passions, I feel sorry for the boredom that oozes off of them.

I honestly understand the attraction of being here so often, as it never gets boring, as long as the members make the effort. Sometimes there are frustrations, but the postives outweigh the negatives tenfold, and it sure beats what all those "normal" people are doing right now, doesn't it?

I don't think that coming to forums and chat with others about all sorts of different things that concern your hobby and other things is weird at all.

What I think as weird (and I say that as an avid predictor) is our obsession with box-office of movies and predicting it. I like it, but I'd think that many would consider it pretty weird.

My ex-girlfriend thought that it was weird to come on here and predict movies opening weekend and total grosses.

But expressing views on daily activities isnt weird at all. its just like a drawn out version of MSN chat...or similar.

I think of myself as weird though. I am different from the rest. i know nobody that does what i do...

Why is it any weirder than the people who obsess over playing fantasy football, or playing the lottery, or going to the track to bet on the races? I do agree that some people take it too seriously, but it's fun to do. If you've noticed, box office numbers are becoming a bigger and bigger deal. I even heard Leo DiCaprio a few months back refrring to "per creen average", and I had to laugh. You know there has to be a lot of movie people that are really into box office. Their careers depend on it. If my career depended on it, I'd know that stuff backwards and forwards, and look at all of the projections, possibilities, etc...

its weird yes. By weird, i mean unconventional. People dont do these kind of things.

But understandable. I've tried to get talking to my friends about productions and box offices. Never works. Either i'm asked to shut up, or people say i'm making things up or they argue with me with points they have no idea about. Hell, they challenged my numbers from BOM. BOM!!! because yahoo was their source and accoridng to them, yahoo is more credible.

hence, i run here. its easier. i can speak these things, get people's opinions on them and be happy : )

Yes, people on KJ and the box office community are wierd.

Wierd in the sense that they spend too much time bitching about celebrities [which isnt "normal" for men]
Wierd in the sense that people put so much importance over statistics it seems like its more important to them than reality
Wierd in the sense that people here have different tastes from mainstream, and a far darker sense of humour.

Thats true. Its not necesarily a bad thing though
There are people who aren't happy with the society they are living in, the internet is a perfect escape for those people. I personally choose my friends and lock them down and just get along with everyone else; good people in my area are few and far between - people are superficial, self righteous and egotistical as well as incredibly stupid and totally immature; the internet [and my clique of friends] provide me with a welcome relief from the endless amounts of people who i cannot wait to get away from; even though im sometimes dissapointed by the attitudes online too - its still a damn site more fun than a lunchtime at college; where i pleasantly grate my teeth whilst listening to people spew utter bullshit for longer than i had imagined possible. Im pleasant to everyone, but i dont have to like them.

My friends are an eclectic group, i like to spend time with people one on one or in a smaller group; or if ive got vodka then fuck it, ill hang about with just about anyone, but ive got maybe 3 super close friends and they are really laid back people and are totally into this for me because they know media is what i want to do and what im good at. They don't think its wierd, ive got hobbies aside from box office and my website so im constantly multi-tasking; which is a good thing.

Im doing media and film/cinematography so its kind of in my better interest to be into film and creative arts, statistics related go hand in hand; but i still have a social life - [although after that night in november it became greatly reduced]

This is a very weird place. I thought the whole Awards ceremony process thing was laughable and a bit weird, but then I remembered I played in the predicting the winners game for it....

I also think it's funny and weird that most of the people here seem to think they are the smartest human beings on the planet.

It's weird when people start taking this stuff way too seriously. If I wouldn't know better, which I do, I would have thought the October indicents were the first stages of the Second Coming. Seriously...

My interest in the box office is part of a greater interest in statistics and numbers. I doubt most consider it weird when I tell them the land area and population of a given country or city. Usually, it's considered impressive, albeit obscure. Meh...

Yes, but obsessing about facts is acting in a way.

Anyways, no, it's not weird. Just keep in mind that you never know the people, but only their online personas.

I suppose if you feel comfortable in yourself doing what you do, then you are not weird.

To other people you may sound weird, but that is there problem, not yours. Coming onto forums is 'out-of-the-ordinary', not everybody does this....but then how do we know that? there are forums for LOADS of different things...because we have no interest in them we do not know what else goes on in them.

To tell you the truth, I feel sorry for some of the teenagers that hang out online, they should be out in the real world more. But it makes sense for some adults and as you get older, entertainment options become a little more limited and this keeps you in touch with the world.

What the net is great at is bringing hobbyists together, or people with a similar interest. So we can use a forum like this to say things and get things out of our system that we can't in "real life". If I want to say "Uhh how come Hurley hasn't lost any weight on Lost?", I can ask that here, and get an intelligent reply usually. In real life, I'd get a blank stare, or a huh yeah.

For me its a game to predict movies.
High Box office means how many people have a similar taste of movies or how good a marketing campaign works
Im interested in Numbers and statistic so why not Box office.
I never understood the hype about "famous" peolpe and their earnings so thats not my thing its not my life.

So at the end its really the game aspect. Its like watching Football. Who will win ? here it is will it be a hit etc.......

Last but not least. Im proud to be one of the few hundred freaks and geeks who talk about Box office =D>

And i higher my skill in English as a person not from a english speaking country (at least im trying.)
