 Al Qaeda Hates Russell Crowe
I guess they haven't seen Gladiator
==========================
Source: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=s ... e_crowe_dc
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe (news) said he may have been a target of an al Qaeda kidnap plot in early 2001, part of a bid by the militant network to "culturally destabilize" the United States.
The Australia-based Crowe told GQ magazine in an interview that he received FBI (news - web sites) protection throughout the filming of "A Beautiful Mind" and for part of "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World." He also was flanked by undercover agents at the Golden Globe awards (news - web sites) ceremony in 2001.
When asked who might have been targeting him, Crowe replied: "Um ... well, that was the first conversation in my life that I'd heard the phrase al Qaeda."
New Zealand-born Crowe, who won the Best Actor Academy Award in 2001 for "Gladiator," said he was told a French policewoman in Libya or Algeria had picked up the threat in a recording.
"I don't think that I was the only person (targeted). But it was about -- and here's another little touch of irony -- it was about taking iconographic Americans out of the picture as a sort of cultural-destabilization plan," he said.
Crowe said that at some point the FBI "thought the threat had probably or had possibly been overstated, and then they started to question their sources ... ."
Osama bin Laden (news - web sites)'s al Qaeda network carried out the Sept. 11, 2001, hijacked airliner attacks on the United States.

Actually, I think it's because they have seen Gladiator. A film that awful really is a threat to humanity. I believe Catwoman and Phantom of the Opera to be the other two.
Anyways, I can now say I have something in common with them terrorists. We both hate them Crowe.

I hate him too, but I stay away from him to help deal with it. Not sure how much of that is for real. Crowe isn't exactly above being a piece of garbage, and has an inflated opinion of himself to begin with. He's not even American to begin with, so how does he represent "iconographic Americans". Wouldn't they be more apt to go after Harrison Ford or Clint Eastwood?

Wow so none of you would actually care if he got captured and beheaded something like that?
SOME PERSPECTIVE NEEDED THERE.

Which is why he said, "and here's another little touch of irony -- it was about taking iconographic Americans out of the picture..."
He does seem to have a pretty inflated ego though, so who knows.
Personally, I can't help but like the guy. Maximus is my hero.

Sure I would care. I wouldn't want to see that happen at all, but I don't put a great deal of stock in that ever happening to Crowe. He's not exactly one of America's most beloved celebrities or anything, if that's what the plan is. If you are Al Queda, and you wish to devastate the America people's psyche, you would probably kidnap and behead Oprah Winfrey, not somebody like Russell Crowe. People like his movies, but he's not exactly topping many people's lists of beloved entertainment personalities, so it makes no sense that they would plot to kidnap him, if their goals were what he claims.

This thread is just like mine only not as cool.
My Oprah hatred even managed to find it's way here without me posting it. Spooky.

Wow... poor Oprah. She can't catch any love here. I figured we'd see more people offering up Pauly Shore or Gallagher.

haha...I didn't see that thread, which is surprising since Crowe was mentioned. I wasn't giving any Oprah hate, I was just commenting on beloved celebrities, which is why her name popped in my head, as opposed to people like Crowe. If they were seriously considering such an outlandish plot to hurt the American psyche, number one, they'd get an American, not Crowe, and two, they'd go after one of America's sweethearts. Maybe even stir some race and gender issues. Russell Crowe would be far from the top of anybody's list, even though he doesn't want to believe such a thing.
