There are actually many places that probably have the same or less. Some island groups have populations that are probably smaller than your block's is.

Btw, New York City's Gross Municipal Product is $488.8B+, so around $50k per capita (~8m). Metro NY with NJ/Connecticut, etc. has a pop. of around 21-22m, and is along with Tokyo (28-33m metro) probably one of two $1 Trillion metropolis'.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

The EU's number, btw, refers to the 25 country block, which has a pop. of 388m or so.

Anyways, America is ahead of everyone and everything. It's GDP per capita is so far ahead of that of any major county, it's insane. Here's the GDP per capita according to the CIA (2003 figures, for most countries):

Well...at least Germany is still #1 in Europe.

Sad to see Russia that low considering how much they could be capable of...

I love how Ireland is #12. I sure hope Europeans feel good about themselves for pumping their money there.

Box, I just looked; Tokelau has the population of 1,500; we have around 15 households on our block. Our GDP is probably greater too :-D

There was an article about Ireland's economy in the NYT recently. The Irish are utterly perplexed as to how to deal with the new situation they are in. They have never been at the economic forefront. Poverty has been such a feature of their national psyche that without it, it just feels weird

Btw, China's GDp of $6.45T is much, much, much lower when using other means of measuring the GDP; it's around $1.5-1.6T (2004) when using that data. India's would be around $500B.

Also, in 2004, I'm sure California passed Italy at the least. It will most likely pass all European countries by 2025, when its population balloons to 50m.

Box - there are two ways to look at the GDP - the actual amount (The U.S. completely blows everyone away then) or Purchase Power Parity - that depends on how much a dollar gets you in each particular country. That's why there's a discrepancy.

The US is so going down when The Lord of the China: The Return of the China is released. ... I'm sorry, what's the chart for?

Yup. The above data is Purchase Power Parity (though the US data is nominal, I think) .

Wikipedia has the following for Nominal GDP (Actual Amount), in millons US. California;s economy there is bigger than China's (though in 2004 China's 9.5% GDP growth propelled it ahead).

Btw, using nominal figures, optimistic predictions place America's 2025 GDP at $21T and China's at $7T. Lower-end forecasts have America's at $17-18T.

So it's not like America's dominance will erode by much anytime soon...

Europe's Richest Cities, 2001

In Euros, in terms of GDP per capita. Frankfurt has a pop. of 648,000, and is Germany's financial centre (well, inasfar as Germany possesses such a thing).

1 Frankfurt € 74,465
2 Karlsruhe € 70,097
3 Paris € 67,200
4 Munich € 61,360
5 Düsseldorf € 54,053
6 Stuttgart € 53,570
7 Brussels € 51,106
8 Copenhagen € 50,775
9 Hanover € 47,223
10 Hamburg € 43,098
11 Mannheim € 41,674
12 Nuremburg € 41,456
14 Augsburg € 39,360
14 Cologne € 39,108
15 Amsterdam € 38,203
16 Münster € 38,149
17 Wiesbaden € 37,454
18 Dublin € 36,591
19 Vienna € 36,572
20 Stockholm € 35,733
21 Gelsenkirchen € 35,688
22 Helsinki € 35,322
23 London € 35,072
24 Bremen € 35,022
25 Edinburgh € 35,018
26 Bonn € 34,112
27 Antwerp € 33,090
28 Milan € 32,122
29 Glasgow € 31,893
30 Utrecht € 31,712
31 Saarbrücken € 30,368
32 The Hague € 30,110
33 Essen € 29,760
34 Bristol € 29,437
35 Lyon € 28,960
36 Bologna € 28,282
37 Bochum € 27,900
38 Parma € 27,491
39 Dortmund € 26,548
40 Rotterdam € 26,227
41 Strasbourg € 26,015
42 Florence € 25,693
43 Leeds € 25,619
44 Duisburg € 25,259
45 Eindhoven € 25,226
46 Turin € 25,042
47 Toulouse € 24,852
48 Rome € 24,766
49 Bordeaux € 24,252
50 Malmo € 24,233
51 Gothenberg € 24,065

Ya, that's what I figured too Krem.

Thing is, I still don't entirely trust it. The source seems fairly legit (it's a council concerned with cities in Britain; they used to data to complain about the low ranking of British cities), but meh.

Well, the US GDp for 2004 is reported at $11.733 Trillion, up 4.4% from 2003. Unbelievable. Per Capita, it's hovering around $40,000, the biggest in the world PPP-wise.

2004 GDP

Real GDP increased 4.4 percent in 2004 (that is, from the 2003 annual level to the 2004 annual
level), compared with an increase of 3.0 percent in 2003.

The major contributors to the increase in real GDP in 2004 were personal consumption
expenditures (PCE), equipment and software, exports, residential fixed investment, private inventory investment, and federal government spending. Imports, which are a subtraction in the calculation ofGDP, increased in 2004.

The acceleration in real GDP in 2004 primarily reflected an acceleration in exports, an upturn in private inventory investment, and accelerations in equipment and software and in PCE that were partly offset by an acceleration in imports.

The price index for gross domestic purchases increased 2.4 percent in 2004, compared with an
increase of 2.0 percent in 2003.

Current-dollar GDP increased 6.6 percent, or $729.5 billion, in 2004. Current-dollar GDP
increased 4.9 percent, or $517.0 billion, in 2003.

During 2004 (that is, measured from the fourth quarter of 2003 to the fourth quarter of 2004), real GDP increased 3.9 percent. Real GDP increased 4.4 percent during 2003. The price index for gross domestic purchases increased 2.9 percent during 2004, compared with an increase of 1.8 percent during2003.
