FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION:
Don't forget the smaller roles in the bigger films, the smaller roles in the smaller films, the bigger roles in the smaller films, and the bigger roles in the bigger films. Although they might not SEEM oscar worthy, these performances played a key role in keeping movies together that otherwise could've flopped...
Tina Fey, Mean Girls
"These supporting performers are also skilled improvisational actors, like Ms. Fey, who shows up as a frazzled but sane teacher" - Elvis Mitchell, New York Times
Topher Grace, In Good Company
"One could just as easily picture the lean young Tom Hanks as Carter. The likable Grace is a worthy successor, his comic style an elastic mix of cockiness and stumbling self-deprecation." - David Ansen, MSNBC
Timothy Olyphant, The Girl Next Door
"Kelly is the movie's flashiest creation, a leering, magnetic, frightening, glad- handing, easily-amused, hyper-sensitive, utterly deceitful, maddeningly likable wild man. When Olyphant is on screen, there's the feeling that things might go anywhere." - Mick LaSelle, San Francisco Chronicle
Will Ferrell, Anchorman
"Ron, played with sublime goofiness by Will Ferrell, incarnates all the casual chauvinism of the old days." - A.O. Scott, New York Times
J.K. Simmons, Spider-Man 2
"...Jameson steals nearly every scene he's in, perfectly capturing the news editor's manic egotism and belligerence." - Russ Breimeier, ChristianToday
Barbara Streisand, Meet the Fockers
"Hoffman and Streisand are the best things about Meet the Fockers. The movie would have been better off spending more time with them instead of focusing again on the uneasy relationship between eager-to-please Greg and his father-in-law- to-be Jack." - Terry Lawson, Detroit Free Press
You know they're great

FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION:
Uma Thurman for Best Actress in Kill Bill Vol. 2
"Uma Thurman again makes the most of what must be considered to be the role of her career." MOVIE PARABLES
Peter O'Toole for Best Supporting Actor in Troy:
"Peter O'Toole brings a real thespian touch to King Priam, adding blueblood appeal to Troy" SUN NEWSPAPERS OF CLEVELAND
Spider-Man 2 for Best Picture:
"The perfect blend of great action, great comedy, and great melodrama. Once again, Mr. Raimi, I'd like to shake your hand." Window to the Movies

FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION
Best Actor- Tom Cruise in Collateral
"...one of Cruise's best performances and his smartest career move since Magnolia." Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Best Supporting Actress- Jada Pinkett-Smith in Collateral
Best Visual Effects- Day After Tomorrow
"The special effects are on such an awesome scale that the movie works despite its cornball plotting." -- Roger Ebert, CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
Best Animated film- Shrek 2
"Like Toy Story 2 and the Lord of the Rings sequels, Shrek 2 is that rare adventure follow-up that doesn't let you down." -- Richard Roeper, EBERT & ROEPER
Best Ensemble- Meet the Focker
"If you don't think Ben Stiller is funny, Spanglish is playing at the next theater over. Meet The Fockers made me laugh so hard my stomach started to ache." - Willie Waffle, WAFFLEMOVIES.COM
"Why would you want to meet such a blowsy, bawdy, shticky crew in a low-comedy sequel to Meet the Parents? Two reasons only: Barbra Streisand and Dustin Hoffman." - Lisa Schwarzbaum, ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY
Best Horror Movie and Remake- Dawn of the Dead
"Dawn of the Dead works and it delivers just about what you expect when you buy your ticket." - Roger Ebert, CHICAGO SUN-TIMES

He, of course, got a nod for me. I gave TMD 10 noms! And, the only iffy ones are Score and Song, imo.

The most acclaimed female performance of 2004 came from the unintentionally good "13 Going on 30" - a romantic comedy that unveiled TV'S hottest action star as Hollywoods funniest woman.
Jennifer Garner was one of the few actresses in 2004 who had reviews entirely focussing around her, and lifted the comedic project on her own back to global success.
Step aside the oscar pretentions this year, forget those films designed to win the votes and awards, and consider a movie that was truely entertaining, and featured a performance that had Hollywood securing Jennifer Garner as the next Julia Roberts, and moviegoers buzzing about the charismatic star.

I'm going to have to sweat makeshift's style.
I gave 44 films nominees, and Garden State was one of 'em. Including Best Film (*cough* profile *cough*), supporting actress, original screenplay, and best soundtrack). Natalie Portman was the sole girl in my entertainer of the year category (with Eastwood, Stiller, Law, and Will Smith - all of whom, with the exception of Eastwood, have had two+ successes this year).
Maria Full of Grace - Breakthrough Performance, Best Actress, and Best Foreign Film
Closer - Director, Supp. Actor, Supp. Actress, Adapted Screenplay, and Entertainer of the Year (Law/Portman)

Good man, torri. I'm only gonna compaign for films I feel might be overlooked. I love it, but Eternal Sunshine already has enough supporters, you know?
Now, start considering Simon Pegg for Best Actor!
"Playing the stereotypical twentysomething everyman, Pegg has a disarming fragility that evokes a bit of empathy from anyone ever stuck in a rut."
-- Robert K. Elder, CHICAGO TRIBUNE

I've got enough wacky choices for Best Actor with Will Ferrell (come on. he deserves it ), Gael Garcia Bernal, and possibly Topher Grace.
You're kind of right about Best Film, though. Simon Pegg won't get the nod but I can see a couple others casting their vote for Shaun...Shaun sits at #6 as of right now...
However, if everyone, from dolcevita to andaroo, ignore Eternal Sunshine and claim that it's already the fan favorite, it's of course possible that it does get "snubbed".

I'm gonna really campaign hard for Shaun. I think that because it's a horror film, a lot of people will overlook it. It's really, truly great though.
Have you seen my rough draft of the ballot yet in the main thread? Looking it over again, i'm probably gonna end up changing quite a bit. I kinda threw it together last night just to get an idea of what I might want.

For Your Consideration...
Eric Bana for Best Actor in Troy
"Bana, the Aussie actor who was so good in Chopper and so lost in The Hulk, gives the film's strongest performance, nailing the nobility in Hector without making him a paragon of dull virtue." - Rolling Stone
The Day After Tomorrow for Best Visual Effects
"...grand, epic effects and amazing visualizations of catastrophe..." - Chicago Tribune
Hotel Rwanda for Best Picture
"The film works not because the screen is filled with meaningless special effects, formless action and vast digital armies, but because Cheadle, Nolte and the filmmakers are interested in how two men choose to function in an impossible situation. Because we sympathize with these men, we are moved by the film." - Roger Ebert

 i KNOW!
But im serious, why is it that movie fans & critics have some obligation to vote for all of these actors and actresses that are out for awards anyway? I can't say that regularly understand the Oscars choice in each category every year - especially for acting. The fact that Moulin Rouge was snubbed come oscar time alone ; yet Chicago swept the board really proves that its mostly a crock of shit [Chicago - good. Moulin Rouge - Legendary]
Jennifer's performance in "13" was the only real showing of a female taking a total lead in a movie for the year - mostly unintentionally too. the reviews for her performance in the picture have been better than practically any other female anchored pic of the year - with Million Dollar Baby and Hillary Swank being the other actress i can think of with similar praise. So why not? IMO Kate Winslet was also great btw - as was Eternal Sunshine.
Sure im being bias here, why not? But im not one to deny a great performance or talent when i see it - and it seemed at release time that everyone who watched the film was raving about THE PRESIDENT GARNER in it.
I' guess i just don't rate all these contrived award films which i see critics and movie fans praising as the best things EVER every single year. To the movie going audience who actually sees these Oscar hyped pictures - its rare to find one that is actually entertaining - and this years Oscar nods are possibly some of the most obvious choices yet. Every year i watch a good few "oscar" pics when they come to my multiplex, even more on dvd, but this year ive found 95% of the offerings to look so totally pretentious and dull that id rather NOT go to the theater at all. Wheres As Good as it Gets? Wheres Chocolat? For a year that provided such excellence in blockbusters and comedies, 2004 was not exactly kind to us in dramas or arthouse projects - nearly none appeal to my tastes this year.
Maybe the fact ive not watched many of 2004's oscar favourites makes me cynical of the choices -usually im more receptive to the kind of film, but usually theres some original, distinguishing films there. Aside from Sideways and Eternal Sunshine i cant really see any
Imo, when an actor, actress or director provides entertainment on such a great level, or puts in such amazing amounts of talent or effort, they deserve to be recognised reguardless of the pictures genre or associations. It took Lord of the Rings like $2b before the oscars finally gave it anything.

Since I suck at this, I'll revert some back to other posts.
I congratulate Zing for mentioning Tina Fey in Mean Girls, Will Ferrell in Anchorman, Topher Grace in In Good Company, and MOST of them all, Timothy Olyphant in The Girl Next Door. Girl Next Door was a good teenage film, but Olyphant helped make it great. I loved him in the movie, even more than Elisha Cuthbert... well... okay, I admit that it's true. Don't blame me!
And, Makeshift's campaign for Shaun of the Dead? DEE-lish!

That wasn't Zing. That was me. Jerk.
*goes to cry in corner and ponder over why popular kids always get credit*
Anyways, I can't rave more over Olyphant. I'm sure he'll die out in a couple years, but seriously - he was great. His role, esp. in that comedy, was so intense that it almost makes you wonder whether the guy, like his character, is such a hard ass in public. The movie puts him in a light that, had I met him and chatted with him and was then complemented BY him, I'd honestly think it was some plot to take advantage of me.
