Code: Police: Student died from 'water intoxication'
Friday, February 4, 2005 Posted: 8:21 AM EST (1321 GMT)
CHICO, California (AP) -- A California State University student died of "water intoxication" during hazing in the basement of a fraternity, authorities said Thursday.
Matthew Carrington, 21, died early Wednesday while drinking water from a five-gallon jug and doing exercises at the Chi Tau house near the Chico campus, said Chico Police Sgt. Dave Barrow.
An autopsy showed death was triggered by hyponatremia, a condition in which excess water in the body causes sodium levels in the blood to drop. Water is then absorbed into the blood and fluid builds up in the brain.
The case was still under investigation, and no decision had been made on whether to file charges.
Carrington's is the second pledge death at Chico since 2000, when an 18-year-old died of alcohol poisoning.
The university cut its ties to Chi Tau in 2002 because of "a series of increasing problems and complaints," including excessive alcohol use and loud parties, a campus spokesman said.

wow. this re-enforces my believe that all the water drinking that goes on at after-hours clubs (to stay hydrated from drug use) is more dangerous than anything...

I read the post. It says that the guy drank too much water during the pledge, which was a very moronic thing to do. But why does anyone have to go to jail over it?

Most likly ... they had the pledges down in a basement, doing massive ammunts of excercise ... jogging in place, pushups, situps, and the like. They were probably trying to make them puke ... and have to piss ... but hold it in. Probably made them drink huge quantities of water, filling their stomach, and thus making it uncomftorable to do excercise ....
All in all ... I can't see any charges coming, I mean they wern't using alcohol, how are they supposed to know too much water can .. um ... kill?
It is just an odd hazeing incident gone wrong ... I don't think they really did anything wrong, or should be charged. That is unless of course he wanted to stop and they made him keep going or something of that nature. As it is now, anyone who joins a frat should fully know that hazing is part of the process. A part which DOES effectivly bring you closer to your fellow pledges.

Hazing is fuckin ignorant, and the whole "brotherhood thing is a joke....noone treats you like utter garbage, that you can call a friend...trust me, I rushed a frat.

There is a psychological motivation behind hazing. Studies have shown that there is a greater importance that people place on things that were difficult to attain. Fraternities and Sororities heavily rely on that effect in order to give themselves a value they otherwise would not have. Basically, the harder it is to join and the more difficult it is made, the more likely that the people who end up joining will remain extremely faithful and loyal to that club. So joining the sorority or fraternity does not imply any considerable value beforehand but becomes valuable because of the process. Of course, if the fraternity or sorority has a history and tradition, then prestige will factor in as well. Curiousity also plays a part.
A similar example is joining a college in general. Yale or Harvard students are very faithful to their colleges because they must convince themselves that those colleges are worth the hard process and work required to enter them. That is obviously just one reason (friends, genuine affection for the education environment and institution, etc. play a part as well), but it is something worth considering.
Edit: As for my personal opinion, let me say this: I have never had much admiration or patience for people who think it a worthwhile effort. More importantly, I have never given it a great enough importance to construct any strong feelings towards or about it. It's not worth considering, really.

I don't agree with that totally.
Hazing is meant to bring you closer to your pledge brothers ... the guys in the same class as you, who you will be spending the remaining 3 years with. Guys you will likley be living with, drinking with, and relying on. Hazing is meant to bring you closer to your fellow pledges, and weed out those who you can't rely on.
Now some hazing deffinatly goes too far, there is no doubt about that, but some of the things they do are worthwhile.

Why blame the Frat boys? Yeah they are idiots. This guy died trying to get into the idiotic brotherhood. Nobody forced him to do it. He could have just walked away.

Im still in High School, but I can relate...
I would much rather like to keep my high school anony. to make sure I dont get in trouble
...WEll IM in the JROTC program, and in the JROTC program there are 3 teams: Drill Team, Color Gaurd, etc..
Well all the teams do Hazing(but not together!), and its meant to bring the team closer closer....I mean, these people on your team are your brothers and your sisters, and the end result of the "haze", is you actually feeling THAT close to them.
Yes, it hurts, and it sucks, but in the end, your reward is a long term, close friendship with the people who went through this with you....they told me before I got hazed, "Pain is temprary, but Friendship is Forever"....
So yeaa, Im in High School, but hazing does occur in H.S also, and I understand why.
