Yeah because all policemen have tranq guns handy.

Im into animal rights and i dont think killing animals is ever okay, but at the same time i wouldn't give this officer shit for shooting the cougar, if it was close to a school on recess can you imagine how he would have felt if he stopped and called animal services in instead and that cougar went on to kill some kids.

But to be fair, if it was any distance away from kids and that situation then it is a little iffy.

Most Animal Control Officers have a tranq gun available. We could call AC and get one on scene in 15 minutes in the daytime, but it could be hours at night.

However, if you dicked around trying to get one on scene and it did eat some kid or hurt somebody, then you'd be fucked. I definitely wouldn't trust it enough to wait while trying to locate one. It's one of those situations where you're damned if you do, and possibly damned if you don't.

Doesnt the tranquil take something like 30seconds to a minute to be in full effect? I could see it only being useful around areas without high civilian

I really don't know. I've never been around when it's been used. I'm not even sure if it would work or be strong enough on a Cougar, I think they mostly use them for dogs. The situation never came up for me. I'll have to ask next time I see Animal Control.

Not to get off on old war stories, but I once had 2 Emus walking through the middle of our town. It got loose from a local meat packing plant. Those things kick like a dickens and can really hurt you. One of the guys from the plant got one from behind and we got it in the back of the patrol car... the car stunk for a month. It's the only time I ever arrested an Emu.

What the hell was an ostrich doing in a butcher shop?

Emus? That is great. Now when I think of you, I'll think of you running around chasing an Emu, and getting your ass kicked by it.

I still feel bad for the Cougar. I mean, sure, it makes sense to shoot it if it's charging at you. Although I would not be walking around near it, I'd be in the car calling animal control.

Apparently they eat them? There must be some difference between an Ostrich and Emu, because when I called it an Ostrich they corrected me that it was an Emu. They look the same to me. All I know is I would never eat one!

Just to clarify... I kicked his/her ass. It ended up in the back of the patrol car.

I'm just happy there were no cameras around to capture that one. A lot of onlookers, but it was before camera phones were big. The local CBS news crew came by later on and interviewed a lot of the people that saw them, but they never contacted me. :disgust:

Must have been a slow news day.

Holy crap. Yeah, this one was about my size... 6 foot-ish.

You say there were no cameras around to capture this ass kicking, so I still say the Emu was the one that kicked your ass. Obviously you'd tell the story a little differently since theirs no proof it didn't happen like you say.

But don't worry, my uncle got into a fight with a turkey and was pretty banged up, so nothing to be too embarassed about. Them gigantic birds are tough.

Poor ostriches only wanted to flee the butcher shop to gain their freedom but along comes Tony the bad cop that shattered their dreams :disgust:

He got his ass kicked by a turkey? At least my bird was 6 foot tall and had legs the size of tree trunks!

Anyhow, I may still have that news story around somewhere. Maybe I'll YouTube it and you can see all the bystanders talk about what a stud the officer was who captured it, because if memory serves me right, that's all they talked about.

Hey... it's never happened again. Sometimes you have to make an example of one so that the others get the message. Word spread fast around the Emu community to not mess with me.
