Post Canary Island Volcano Could Trigger MEGA TSUNAMI!!!!!
http://www.earthfiles.com/news/news.cfm ... ry=Science

Ladies and Gentlemen, this folks could very well be the next Mt St. Helens like back in 1980 and Scientists state that if in fact this Volcano were to blow and a HUGE chunk of it blow off causing a Massive landslide of Monumental Proportions into the Ocean below, it could and WILL trigger a MEGA TSUNAMI that would be a Kilometer high!!! This means folks, that the wave would be almost 1/2 a mile high and when it reached New York and the East Coast some 12 hours later, the wave will hit the East Coast with a wave 170 feet high(about as large as a 15 story tall building) that would pretty much mean, well, The End folks.. I mean, you thought a wave like the one in India was big and that was only 20-30 feet high with all the devastation it caused?? Imagine a wave as high as a 15 story building wiping out all of the East Coast along with Brazil etc??? Brace yourselves... It's coming and we just don't know when.. 8-[

Well now think about it for a second.. :-k The Tsunami that hit over in India all the way as far as Africa so far has a body count of 225,000 people as of yesterday on MSN.. That was a wave only 30 feet high.. Imagine a wave hitting at 500 MPH and being 170 feet high Bill??? I mean, that's bigger than the wave in the movie DEEP IMPACT and look at how fucking big that was???.. When I say "The End", it may not be total extinction, but damn if it won't kill and wipe out a good portion of the East Coast.. It sure would.. I think the death toll would be greater than what's in India right now...

The canary island prediction was made in 2001.

Why put fear into people like this? It's bad enough everyone was told to be scared of terrorist attacks, now we're supposed to be scared of a big-ass tsunami? It's not like we can control this if it happens, so why the hell should people worry about it?

BKB, if it sweeps you away before it does me, and I get to see that, then I'd die a happy man.

Well

The tsunami threat existed for a long time actually. Around Hawaii, its been predicted for a long time about seeing tsunamis as high as 80 to 90 feet every few years (i forget the numbers, i speak out of memory).

I was in chicago where discoevery had a whole show on it. and it rekindled my memory of them. If you guys get the chance, check it out. What happened in indonesia right now was not a "one incident only" event.

BKB, Look at the bright side. If a 175 feet high Tsunami hits the east coast, St. Louis will be have beachfront property.

Classic!

That's funny, I thought as the joke went, California was supposed to go under?

@bABA...Japan gets them every year, they just have technology and architecture to handle it. The reason this one was so devestating was because these particular countries were too poor to take pre-emptative measures such as building wave breakers, dams, etc.

Thanks

Dolce, Japan's coastline is relatively small compared to India or the African coast. Can you imagine what it would take the U.S. eastern seaboard to be secured against a tsunami? The cost of a system like that would be astronomical and beyond reach even for the U.S.

For all its wealth, U.S. infrastructure is in need of major overhaul and the monies available is only about a fifth of the what is required to upgrade the infrastructure.

@BKB: I used to work in KCMO. Missouri has the second worst rated highways and bridges in the country.

I love how the words mega tsunami are in CAPS LOCK at the end of the thread title. It's straight out of a 50's science fiction B-movie.

Canary Island Volcano Could Trigger......... *DUN DUN DUN* MEGA TSUNAMI!!!!!

BTW - Whenever a natural disaster occurs, things like this pop up all over the place. If this were such an imminent emergency, you'd think one would hear about it from other places than earthfiles.com, you know?

I put MEGA TSUNAMI in the heading because that's what it fucking is folks... A wave 170 feet high is a MEGA TSUNAMI... Yes or No??? :-k That is what it is, right??? :???:

HERE is Link and a Quote from a Dr.Rundle and Dr.Ward on the Canary Island Volcano blowing and sending out a MEGA TSUNAMI and the Quote is towrd the bottom from Jan 9th of this year.. Now shut up and have a nice day.. :-# :

http://msnbc.msn.com/id/6798858/

Dr. Rundle: “If a large earthquake of magnitude 7 or larger were to happen either here or there, you could see there's an unobstructed path to the Eastern coast to the United States.”

Such a wave could engulf Miami and reach as far north as Washington, D.C.

And what about New York City? How realistic is that movie image, in "Deep Impact," of the Big Apple submerged? Well, if you ask Dr. Steven Ward of U.C. Santa Cruz, it's certainly possible. In 2001 he and a colleague published a paper. It may read like a movie script, but it's science.

According to Ward, a huge chunk of a volcano on the Canary Islands, near Morocco, is on the verge of chipping off and sliding into the Atlantic. Another volcanic eruption, and it might go.

He then goes on to say Quote:

Dr. Steven Ward: “This particular volcano has vertical layers of rock inside it filled with water, like vertical dams. When the eruption occurs, hot material will come up and heat this water. And it-- almost like a popcorn seed, it's going to pop off the side. And when this happens, it'll make a big wave.”

Think of a rock almost the size of Manhattan falling into the sea.

Dr. Ward: “It's going to be 20 times, 15 times more than this than in the earthquake which you saw. So we're talking seriously. It's equivalent to all of the nuclear bombs and earthquake at once.”

In this computer model he designed, the gigantic tsunami starts fanning out immediately. Within nine hours the wave would wallop the Atlantic shore, drowning everything in its path, with 80-foot waves engulfing New York City.

The island of Manhattan

The island of Manhattan would be underwater?

Dr. Ward: “Yes.”

Does he really believe that that might happen?

Dr. Ward: “Absolutely. Because as a geologist, you're not just making things up. You look at previous examples.”

But before New Yorkers start heading for the hills, keep in mind other scientists aren't so concerned. They point out the volcanic rock may just crumble gradually, not fall in one big plop. And they say an eruption strong enough to dislodge the rock may be tens of thousands of years away.

Dr. Ward: “Do I think it's likely? No. If you want statistics, somewhere in the world such an event's happened about every 5,000 to 10,000 years.”

Yes, for all the doomsday scenarios, scientists agree, odds are these will never happen in our lifetime. But then, they warn, you never know. While there's a growing body of knowledge about where tsunamis may hit, the pertinent question of when is still, pretty much, anyone's guess.

Sophisticated deep sea tsunami warning system for the West Coast is currently in operation. Emergency officials say it is subject to false alarms, but many consider it effective. They believe the disaster in south Asia could prompt the building of a similar system for the East Coast.

So, you found one reputable news site reporting the story (based on a study done in 2001, no less) that says it will most likely never happen and you want me to shut up? Right...

Nice job of quoting only the parts you want people to read.

Yeah, it clearly says it...

And then goes on to clearly say that it will probably never happen.

The only "stooge" here is the one trying to pass off fear mongering that's cashing in on a terrible tragedy as legitimate news.

I recently came across this poem by Robert Frost, and it's sort of appropriate:

Fire and Ice

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To know that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

Funnily enough, when this was reported in like 2003, no one batted an eyelid.

Is it going to take the melting of the polar ice-caps for people to take note of Global Warming too?
