 Should I become a vegetarian?
I like animals. But both as living creatures and as food. I'm conflicted. What should I do?
Thanks, s snack

Go for it. Or don't. It really won't make any difference either way.

Thanks, s snack Who says you can't like them both ways? I love animals! I just love to eat them more. I tried to lay out my thoughts on the subject of "moral" vegetarianism, but Maddox just does it so much better. http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=grill

As for becoming a vegetarian, the main reason I find to become one nowadays is largely to protest the conditions that factory farmers raise their animals in, the main reason I was raised vegetarian until my family moved to the country and we raised our own meat. At least the animals killed by combines had a chance to live a decent life (Save their final 30 seconds or so). If you want "Guiltless Grill" with the actual grill, look into places that sell organically grown meat.

Re: Should I become a vegetarian?
As my mother says, I hate animals, that's why I don't eat them. :D I just really don't like meat and I couldn't give a shit about the animals themselves.

Re: Should I become a vegetarian?
Definitely worth experimenting with - - I did a year of it, and it definitely improved my diet even after I returned to meat eating, not to mention the increased breadth of my cooking skills.
I did it for health reasons, as I never understood how some vegetarians consider plants not to be living things!?!? Now that's speciesism if I've ever seen it! If it's just because of animal's sad eyes - - I say it's time to re-evaluate your ethics...

Most people should probably for whatever diet they have but... ...you need to make sure you fill in the missing section of your diet with the right grains/vitamins/etc.

If you have to ask people on a movie forum, I'd say no, you shouldn't.

Re: Should I become a vegetarian?
I've been considering this. I have no moral reasons for not wanting to eat meat, I don't believe there is anything wrong with killing animals for food as long as you eat it and get nutrients from it. But I do believe that it is healthier to get protein from nuts, eggs, and other things. Plus, I want to be consistent in my view of morality in others views; while I don't think there's anything wrong with eating meat morally, I don't want to support the life of some things and not others. I want to support all life.

Re: Should I become a vegetarian?
I'm a pescatarian. I still eat fish. Been that way longer than most of you have been alive, and I'm quite healthy, thank you.
My attitude is that I don't want to be a hypocrite -- it still bugs me when people say "I love animals!" and fight against cruelty to dogs and cats while they eat their hamburgers and bacon. #allanimalsmatter
I also consider it a kind of boycott against very cruel animal farms.
I also know that not eating meat is healthier. No reputable doctor will tell you otherwise (as long as you still have a good balanced diet, which is one of the reasons I still eat fish -- they're low enough on the evolutionary scale that it doesn't bother me as much and meh, I'm no absolutist anyway. So I'm only 80% good; it's better than 0%.)
I'm no PETA crazed radical though. Those people are nuts.

Re: Should I become a vegetarian?
I'm against the death penalty (I do believe a choice between a life sentence and death could work, though) support refugees, against abortion besides danger to the mother and maybe rape, and the government providing people's basic needs like food stamps and healthcare, so I figure I need to become a vegetarian so no one can call me a hypocrite.

You can be pro-choice and still eat meat.
Also... not to get off topic but... MAYBE rape?!

No. I'm still making up my mind. I guess since less than 1% of abortions are due to rape, we could let that be an exception as well. Though Chippy I have to thank you for not resorting to red herrings to argue.

Re: Should I become a vegetarian?
You really think women who were raped are going to wait, say, 5 months to get an abortion?
No way. They're going to get that small collection of cells out of their body as quick as they possibly can, long before there is any viability. Calling a collection of cells a "person" is like calling an egg a chicken.
This is the problem with the anti-abortion people and why it is impossible to debate them.
I agree that abortion should be illegal after a certain time, when the baby is indeed a baby that can exist outside the womb. When that date is can be discussed and debated and should be based on science and medical expertise.
The anti-abortion people instead claim, without a shred of evidence, that a collection of cells is a baby from the moment of conception. They usually base this on a religious belief, which has no place in our laws.
So the best way to deal with people like this is to ignore them while those of us who actually pay attention to facts and logic deal with the real world
