Wait, Riggs and Algren did not know it was Ebert himself (post-surgery) pictured? Fucking morons.

All the best parents are out getting drugged up. Come on, Chip. Drop the schtick. I know you love to troll. But surely you aren't going to defend him as a parent knowing that he's a huge drug taker. That is just not a responsible thing to do. And yes, him overdosing does have something to do with his parenting skills. His kids obviously know he's a druggie. What sort of example do you think that sets for them?

Re: Philip Seymour Hoffman is dead
I'm not trolling. You don't know how long he was on drugs. A week? A month? Does that short period of drug taking undermine all of the good parenting he has done? How did taking drugs affect his parenting? Did his children know at the time? Obviously overdosing "sets a bad example" for his kids, but you don't know how it will affect them and if it will possibly deter them from ever taking drugs.

Re: Philip Seymour Hoffman is dead
I don't need to know the length of time he was taking drugs. This isn't the first time he took them, so he wasn't exactly experimenting. He knew what he was doing, and he did it in private because he didn't want his kids to know. Now they do know. And they've now lost a parent due to drugs. That is not good parenting, deterrent or not, no matter how you cut it.

Re: Philip Seymour Hoffman is dead
At least Hoffman's self-destruction was private and only involved himself and his body. Paul Walker (also a father) and his friend could have easily ended many more lives by dangerously speeding through a commercial/suburban area. Self-righteous, holier-than-thou criticism of the recently famous dead should be directed at him.
Everyone lost, but Philip Seymour Hoffman wins.

You're making one bad choice seem like it overshadows any good he did as a father, and that's idiotic. Paul Walker making a bad decision and getting in a car with someone who was probably going to speed doesn't mean he was a bad father. My dad getting cancer because he doesn't eat right and smokes cigars doesn't make him a bad father. [insert mean observation about how you were parented here]

Re: Philip Seymour Hoffman is dead
In regard to raising children and using hard drugs at the same time, I do not believe it is wrong to say the combination constitutes, in its way, "bad parenting." Which does not in any way have to mean unloving. However, a person who has 50 small bags of heroin his apartment and dies with a needle in his arm is clearly on a road running counter to being a consistent, viable parental figure, even if they have an enormous amount of earnest love in their heart for their child alongside the despair.

I never said that doing drugs wasn't "bad parenting", it certainly is. I'm stating that his doing drugs does not necessarily make him a "bad parent". I think people that take their young children to church are exhibiting "bad parenting". That does not make them "bad parents".

Re: Philip Seymour Hoffman is dead
Being a parent is a bad idea anyway. Best to live inside one's own joy and pain and not create a new, innocent being requiring such an enormous investment of the heart and soul.

This also all falls on how you perceive parenting.

Chippy has reached the limit of his conversational ability. This discussion has been exhausted. All that's left to say is fuck off.

Which is why I made valid points and you made faulty accusations on a man's character.

Re: Philip Seymour Hoffman is dead
Do you mean false accusations? And they were not false. Being a drug addict is not being a good parent. End of.
