What about Cream? Elvis Costello and the Attractions?
It'd have to be Aerosmith, Metallica, and either Guns 'n Roses or The Eagles. I can't think of any other bands that might have a shot of making the final list...
Arg. No one's mentioned the BRILLIANT Smash Mouth...

Isn't Cream english? I don't really know much about em. It's just harsh to see a lot of metallica hate.

I think Aerosmith had too many down years before they got hot again - but they could be #5 on this list.
- And the Beach Boys should be mentioned somewhere.
And I forgot Guns N Roses.

Cream is English. The great Eric Clapton was a member.
Deftones are also great, but I realize they aren't the greatest.

Guns N Roses would of been considered had they not taken more than a decade and half to get an album out and probably never will. They havent done anything new since Use Your Illusion back in 1991, that album where they did punk remakes doesnt count. Same with NIN if Trent Reznor isnt so much a neat freak about producing a perfect album. But seriously no other american band/group that has sold consistenly multi-platnum albums as much as Beastie Boys even back in the 80s each of their albums sells at least 2 million copies each and even their new albums sell at least around that rate

For me the lists starts with led Zeppelin
*breaks into When the Levee Breaks*
As for Metallica, after the horror that was St. Anger, no, off the list...try again when you stop killing cats to make music. I waited years for new material and that is what I got, I was not happy.
You and I should Marry since those are the exact same groups I thought of, all 3 I've seen in Concert and were the BEST.. What a coincidence... I saw Pink Floyd in 1988 and in 1994 and The Rolling Stones in 1998 with Bridges to Babylon Tour and Led Zeppelin back in 1976 at the Kiel in St.Louis.. Hell I feel old..

:worthy:
I am far to young to have seen Zeppelin, born in the wrong decade alas. I missed the tour when Jimmy Page toured with the Black crowes while I was an undergrad, and I kikc myself for it.
I'd built a tiem machine for the sole purpose of seeing Zeppelin in concert.

After the Crazy-Crying-Amazin album, I'n knock Areosmith off any list that promotes orginalality. Please that song from Armaggedon was that Crazy-Cryin-Amazin all over again.
I think of Aerosmith as highly overrated, aside from Dream On, I don;t think they have one song played on the radio I actually like.
They should be hurt for their bad cover of the Beatles "Come Together"

There is a band most people forget. I dont know how I'd catigorize their music but what about Bonjovi. They've survived for 20 years and sold over 100million records. Only a small handfull have accomplished that.

I think a band with potential is The Killers. I like their debut album, but they're obvioulsy too new to add to this list.

Well my favorite American rock bands are Nirvana and The Doors.
REM, Beck, Garbage, Smashing Pumpkins, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Weezer are also up there.
Among the newer bands, White Stripes and Wilco kick ass.
