 Re: Minneapolis Burning
Covid 19 and the socioeconomic and psychological effect of the stay-at-home orders and societal shutdowns had a major effect on these riots. Previous police protests this century had been mainly peaceful without the looting and major arson and violence. There is pent up frustration from people’s loss of their livelihood and human contact that goes beyond racial issues In causing greater destruction. Also everyone wearing masks gives rioters a sense of anonymity to cause more harm.

 Re: Minneapolis Burning
Is Shack making an excuse for what the Cops did with that coroner report? Knees to the back & neck....when George Floyd was already handcuffed & restrained by 4 cops. *btw no police academy teaches officers to put knees on neck*
Isn't that what EXACERBATE his underlying illness & ended up killing him. WTF are we talking about here!
AMERICA where you make up excuses for anything....even MURDER!

 Re: Minneapolis Burning
I'm curious if Shack thinks Floyd would be dead if the cop didn't knew on his neck for ten minutes.

I could answer that but I don't think you are genuinely interested in the answer. I have made my feelings clear that I don't think a cop restraining someone leading to a heart attack (with drugs and heart disease as factors) is the same as strangling them to death.

 Re: Minneapolis Burning
it isn't the same, Shack. Hence why it was not a 1st degree murder charge. It's no different than the aforementioned example of punching someone and them dying from hitting their head on the fall.
Premeditated? No. Death as the result of a careless action that should never have occurred? Yes.

There's many ways that analogy is flawed. But I'm not going to go into them again. Still think there's a good possibility he swallowed a a bunch of coke before the cops pulled him over which would make this discussion mute. The video feels like an overdose to me. If true the cops biggest crime would be restraining a man dying for other reasons instead of making a greater effort to help him. Which is unjust but not worth burning the cities down for.

Magnus wrote: Most research of protests over last 100 years show that violent protests usually end in a net negative for policy changes.
But a lot of this research is based on pre social media events. And one can argue that changes in media and discourse make it that nonviolent protests are less effective than they used to be and violent are more effective.
So maybe burn it down a little? It also depends on how the state responds. If the state uses a heavy-handed approach to quell the protests or gets caught instigating violence, the public will be more sympathetic to the protestors and more will join the protests. The age of social media gives protestors a human face and a voice, which otherwise would get drowned out by the authorities or filtered in traditional media.

 Re: Minneapolis Burning
Justice for Floyd, police brutality and systemic racism in policing are just causes to protest. The looting at the scenes unfortunately is taking some focus off the protests. Protestors need to be vigilant and be ready to call out bad actors and infiltrators who are caught veering off course. Focus on the message.

 Re: Minneapolis Burning
I just saw a video on Twitter of a guy seemingly getting murdered by a mob. He's lying on the street all bunched up in an unnatural way with blood everywhere as if his spine was cracked. He literally looks like that Final Destination death with the gymnast who lands wrong.
Please stay safe and stay away from these crowds right now.

Maybe things will be fine when police stop provoking and hurting people and leave them alone. De-escalation.

Same shit happened here in Mexico when the women went to the nationwide strike. The riots will keep happening and it's gonna me a mess, let's hope Rona doesn't make its mark on the protestors

 Re: Minneapolis Burning
One police officer murdering one black man with potentially racist motivation equals all white people being responsible. If you don't make a Facebook post talking about all the guilt you feel for also being white, you are just as bad.
Oh wait, no you're not. That's ridiculous. The death of George Floyd is tragic, but it does not mean that all white people have to grovel for forgiveness for also being white.

 Re: Minneapolis Burning
The violence of protestors is obviously wrong but it is Trumps America unleashed. The leader being extremely combative will always trickle down to the people. Good lord does Biden being boring seem like it will be a huge strength in the election. Barrabás wrote: I just saw a video on Twitter of a guy seemingly getting murdered by a mob. Please stay safe and stay away from these crowds right now. He is OK, was alerted and got up. Important to note that of the 10 protestors who jumped him, 50 of them immediately gave him assistance. Also, the dude is on video chasing after some of the protestors with a sword like he's some old school ninja before he got wrecked.

Nobody needs to apologize for being white, as if that is something they have control over. That isn't what BLM is looking for, either. What they want, and have wanted, is white people to be more open about the fact racism still exists in some manner, even if it much more subtle than in the past, and in the name of fairness, white people should call it out when they see it. While harming others is wrong, being silent while others are harmed is equally wrong. That is essentially the point they're making.
