Here are some of my favorite American bands -- I do not mean to imply they are the best. It's just a list for discussion. I didn't count bands that were really just backing group for a singer (Prince, Tom Petty, Springsteen):
Beach Boys B 52s The Band Blondie Cars Crack the Sky No Doubt Oingo Boingo Parliament/Funkadelic Iggy Pop Ramones R.E.M. Sparks Steely Dan Talking Heads They Might Be Giants Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention
And to think that people said that the 80s were a time of really bad music but they neglect to mention the bands that were big during that time that you listed.

Lots of good one there... I forgot about They Might Be Giants, Beach Boys, and No Doubt. Good picks.

Some did. I was in college in the early 80s, and there was some great stuff (as listed above), mostly what was called at the time "new wave" that started in the late 70s. But the 80s also had lots of crappy synthesizer bands like Flock of Seagulls and power metal bands with huge hair that are unlistenable.

I have a better question. Who was the most recent band to be able to sellout stadiums around the country? I think the most recent one of the breed would be Dave Matthews Band. When you compare that to Van Halen, U2, Pink Floyd, or Springsteen you would find that its very very rare for a band itself to headline a 50,000 stadium concert by themselves. I heard Radiohead too sells out stadium size seatings around the world but not in America

Hey now lay off those synthesizer bands. I owned a few Flock of Seagull albums and other synthesizer bands *cough* Thompson Twins. And dont you say a word against Twisted Sister! [-X Power metal bands are my guilty pleasure

Forgot about Radiohead too... another good one.
What about bands that you personally like, but aren't "popular" picks. Personally, Weezer is one of my favorites, and I also always liked Third Eye Blind.

You learn something every day. I should have known only a British guy would spell "Thom" wrong.
Stupid Brits!

Im assuming Tony already knows that, we were just changing the subject quite a bit since I got sidetracked quite a bit when I asked who was the most recent band to headline a stadium size show. Sorry for the misinterpretation

I thought Dave Matthews was from South Africa but moved here and started the band here.
And yes, Weezer is a good band!

I'm very embarrased to say I own nearly every Radiohead CD and didn't know they were British. I guess I never really thought about it. Oh, well, at least the US still has the Beatles!

Hmmm.... I forgot to mention the Monkees!
Actually there were some pretty good bands in the 60s from America: The Byrds, the Raiders, The Wonders....

The Doors, Iggy Pop and the Stooges although they are more from the 70s

American Bands? I know the Eagles were able to do it when they did their Hell Freezes Over comeback tour in 1994.
The Stones sell out bigtime across the country. So does Paul McCartney. Not sure if Pink Floyd has.

I meant of the newer bands out there and doesnt have to be american. I really cant think of any except for DMB can you? It just tells me that the whole arena genre is dead and cant be relived except through veteran bands. Even before DMB sold any shows, Pearl Jam was able to do it through the ticket master gimmack

Here are 4 off the top of my head.
- Eagles
- Credence Clearwater Revivial / John Foggerty
- Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.
- Grateful Dead
---
I think Aerosmith had too many down years before they got hot again - but they could be #5 on this list.
- And the Beach Boys should be mentioned somewhere.

Oh american bands That's pretty much harder to get into. A lot of the great american bands have already been mentioned but what I hate to see is the Metallica hating going on. They are easily a top 3 of greatest american bands. They are still selling out stadium sized concerts and still manage to make platinum (though St. Anger wasn't great compared to their other albums but what are people expecting? Another black album? another ...and justice for all? impossible).
Another band that nobody seems to be giving that much attention too would be Guns n' Roses. They killed off hair metal with Appetite for Destruction and I still manage to give that cd a listen too at least once a month. They have epic songs like November Rain & Patience and rock anthems like Welcome to the Jungle & Paradise City.
Aerosmith! Oh the oh so great Aerosmith! Obvious choice to be on that list! The Eagles also. #3 on the most albums sales by a group in the american market (only being beaten by The Beatles and Led Zeppelin), easy choice.
